And in sadder news, I see Patrick Tambay has died aged 73: https://www.racefans.net/2022/12/04/two-time-grand-prix-winner-tambay-dies-aged-73/

And on that subject...

Michael Andretti says that his team's efforts to secure a place on the F1 grid are making "pretty good progress".

The Andretti organisation, which runs teams in series such as IndyCar, Formula E and Extreme E, has been actively lobbying for a place onto the Formula 1 grid in future seasons – either by acquiring an existing team or as an entirely new, 11th entry. Speaking as the team introduced W Series champion Jamie Chadwick to their Indy Nxt programme for 2023, Andretti said his team was still committed to joining F1.

"We're still moving forward, still working hard," Andretti said. "I think we made pretty good progress the last couple of months. And we're not giving up."

Andretti announced in August it plans to build a new headquarters in Indiana at a cost of £170 million. "We actually have the groundbreaking next week for the new facility," he said in response to a question from RaceFans. "So we're really excited about that, it's going to be awesome."

Just the minor issue remains of getting other teams to agree to share the prize money....

Too bad there isn't a streets of Edinburgh race for a Jackie Stewart outing, although he is 83... okay, maybe Paul di Resta or Coulthard

Another almost certainly not new team for F1:

Lo, a 45-year-old Canadian businessman who has connections with Williams owners Dorilton Capital, sayshe is actively investigating the possibility of financing his own Formula 1 team, either by purchasing an existing team or setting up a new entry.

"In the last few years, I've been approached by many players in the F1 world, from teams to highly aspirational potential team owners or investors," Lo told the Daily Star. "We've been looking at a current team and that's how the idea of starting a new team came about. There are a lot of opportunities right now. I believe we're going into a new era of a younger audience, a newer fanbase. Accessibility seems easier than before.

"We would be very fortunate to be involved, in whatever capacity. With a current team, that would be faster. Realistically, to get the car on the grid [with a new team], it would be 2026. That's a short period of time, a very tight timeline."

Off-season? I think not. Binotto resigns.

Word is, Fred Vasseur is a potential replacement. He'd build the team around Leclerc, much to Sainz's chagrin.

I totally like this idea. Obviously you know what I'm going to do now. 23 races (China is out for next year), 23 drivers driving the "Entry 21". Red Bull get to run a 3rd car courtesy of being champion. This 3rd car will not score constructors point.

Race - Driver - Reason
Bahrain: Romain Grosjean - Reconquer the track that almost killed him
Saudi Arabia: Jamie Chadwick - Because women drivers in Saudi Arabia are super popular
Australia: Mark Webber - Home race
Azerbaijan: Daniil Kvyat - Nearly home race
Miami: Colton Herta - We'll make an exception to the whole Super License
Emilia Romagna: Giancarlo Fisichella - Last Italian to race for Ferrari
Monaco: Nico Rosberg - Living in Monaco, it's his home race really
Spain: Alex Palou - Spain's biggest IndyCar star!
Canada: Nicolas Latifi - At least he knows how to drive these cars
Austria: Felipe Drugovich - Scene of his first F2 win
Great Britain: Jenson Button - But instead of a 3rd Red Bull, maybe a 2009 Brawn?
Hungary: Jenson Button - Scene of first victory
Belgium: Mick Schumacher - In honour of dad
Netherlands: Robin Frijns - Biggest loss for F1, he should be here. Home race.
Italy: Felipe Massa - Always a Ferrari fan favorite
Singapore: Kamui Kobayashi - Since Vettel stole Japan, he'll join the grid here
Japan: Sebastian Vettel - The only circuit he'll race at
Qatar: Marc Márquez - Losail is a motorcycle venue. Could he make the switch?
USA: Daniel Ricciardo - Essentially American 1
Mexico City: Pato O'Ward - Obviously
São Paulo: Rubens Barrichello - He'll never be too old
Las Vegas: Daniel Ricciardo - Essentially American 2
Abu Dhabi: Marcus Ericsson - Indy 500 winner, and scene of his last F1 race

Sure, I reused some drivers like Button and Ricciardo. It's cool. If I can't do that, we could fit Karun Chandhok or Paul di Resta into the car at Silverstone for some live commentary. Ricciardo can do Vegas, but COTA can be run by Josef Newgarden.

I hadn't seen this earlier, but Piastri will race with 81 on his car next season.

https://www.racefans.net/2022/09/27/piastri-explains-why-he-chose-number-81-for-f1-debut-in-2023/

I see De Vries used 34 sometimes in karting, and that is available. He won in F2 with car number 4, occupied by Norris. He won in Formula E with car number 17, and that is retired for Bianchi. So De Vries might go for 34, which is also double his Formula E winning number!

Sargeant has said he wants number 3, but that's reserved for Ricciardo for the coming 2 seasons. He's used 6 in Formula 2, reserved to Latifi for the coming 2 seasons. He could go for 33, double that 3, but that belongs to Verstappen even though he's using 1 at the moment. So the American might have to just grab whatever is available, for example 8 which expires at the end of the year (Grosjean last used it in 2020). He could go for 45, in honour of his favourite US politican.

Of course varying the 3 could give Sargeant 13, 30, or perhaps 53 like Rossi used when he was in F1. Herbie is a classic, no?

Formula One / Fantasy F1 Calendar
Last post by Chrill - November 20, 2022, 05:48:40 PM
So I mean, I think we've somewhat done this in the past. But I'll go ahead and do it anyway because I can't sleep.

Rules (I make em, because I posted this):
* Create your own F1 calendar including 24 circuits
* No country can have more than 3 races (as USA will have this number next season)
* You can only use street circuits, circuits that could reasonable secure Grade 1 certification from the FIA, or circuits that have been used by F1 fairly recently
* You must include at least 1 race in every part of the world F1 does visit (Europe, North America, South America, Middle East, Far East)
* You can re-use a circuit, but must use another reasonable layout

1. Australian Grand Prix - Melbourne Park 🇦🇺
2. Bahrain Grand Prix - Sakhir Outer Circuit 🇧🇭 (Variety with some shorter circuits, the one race we had on this layout in 2020 was good)
3. Tuscan Grand Prix - Mugello 🇮🇹
4. Portuguese Grand Prix - Portimão Circuit 🇵🇹
5. Monaco Grand Prix - Circuit de Monaco 🇲🇨
6. Spanish Grand Prix - Circuit Ricardo Tormo 🇪🇸
7. German Grand Prix - Nürburgring 🇩🇪
8. Austrian Grand Prix - Red Bull Ring 🇦🇹
9. Indianapolis Grand Prix - Indianapolis 🇺🇸 (I think the current cars could use that infield well)
10. Canadian Grand Prix - Circuit Gilles Villeneuve 🇨🇦
11. United States Grand Prix - Circuit of the Americas 🇺🇸
12. British Grand Prix - Silverstone Circuit 🇬🇧
13. Hungarian Grand Prix - Hungaroring 🇭🇺
14. Belgian Grand Prix - Spa-Francorchamps 🇧🇪
15. Dutch Grand Prix - TT Circuit Assen 🇳🇱 (controversial to visit the Motorcycle cathedral, but it'll do better than Zandvoort)
16. Finnish Grand Prix - Helsinki Street Circuit 🇫🇮 (We really need to honour the Finnish)
17. Malaysian Grand Prix - Sepang International Circuit 🇲🇾
18. Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka Circuit 🇯🇵
20. Singapore Grand Prix - Marina Bay Street Circuit 🇸🇬
21. South African Grand Prix - Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit 🇿🇦
22. Las Vegas Grand Prix - Las Vegas Street Circuit 🇺🇸 (I'm genuinely excited to see this one next year. F1 is gimmicky, it's a circus, it's glamour and glitz. Las Vegas in a Monza style circuit makes perfect sense)
23. Mexican Grand Prix - Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez 🇲🇽
24. Brazilian Grand Prix - Interlagos Circuit 🇧🇷

So, what have I done?
* Well, I feel like Bahrain is the best circuit in the Middle East, and if F1 needs oil money let's let them have it. I got rid of the others, though.
* This schedule does jump back and forth across the Atlantic a bit, but not nearly as badly as real F1.
* I'm only inventing one new circuit, the Finnish Grand Prix on a Helsinki street circuit. We've built some circuits over the years, I could revisit them.
* I'm replacing some circuits, like Barcelona and Zandvoort, for other alternatives in their countries.
* Miami is off the calendar, we're back to the very unpopular Indy infield circuit. It'll be fine, as long as nobody uses Michelin.
* An F1 calendar starts in Australia, and ends in Brazil. It is what it is.
