For comparison with how we score in a '2017 Season - Rate the Drivers' thread, should there be one.

Quote from: ChrillCome on, then. This could be fun. On a scale of 1-10, rate the drivers involved in the previous GP. By the end of season, I will compile these stats to get the average rating for the driver overall (and therefore a Driver of the Season) and the average rating for the drivers per user (thus giving us YOUR Driver of the Season).

Chrill - Monaco:

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 9/10
Nico Rosberg – 5/10

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 8/10
Kimi Räikkönen – 4/10

Felipe Massa – 6/10

Quote from: ChrillYes, I was rating over the weekend as a whole. For example, Rosberg's race was a 3 or 4 but his quali was good, so I bumped him up to 5 :P

Hmm, need to do Montreal & Baku... wish I'd paid more attention to the Canadian highlights.  Might do this tomorrow.

How's that for "too much free time"? Yup, an Excel document to do the math for us!!!

Some early stats!

Chrill's best: Sebastian Vettel, 25 (8.3 avg)
Chrill's worst: Jolyon Palmer, 10 (3.3 avg)

Penfold's best: Sergio Perez, 19 (9.5 avg)
Penfold's worst: Jolyon Palmer, 6 (3.0 avg)

I'm sure this will develop over time, with just 3 and 2 races rated so far.

I can't really rate Kvyat. He crashed in qualifying and then his car broke down basically at the start of the race. Giving him a 0 felt unfair so I'm simply excluding him from ratings overall.

Good idea for Kvyat, I'll do the same.

Austria:

Very low scoring round because nobody did anything exceptional. Rating Alonso high because he brought that McLaren to P7 and beat Button by a lot all race long. Rated Raikkonen highly because he took advantage of his harder tyre compound to elevate himself to an acceptable 6th. He should have beat Verstappen though. Rated the Mercedes boys low(ish) because they were complaining and struggling and driving close to the Red Bulls all day long. Hamilton one point over Rosberg thanks to simply taking the lead during the start. That is all.

Felipe Massa finished an abysmal P18 so he's the lowest ranked this weekend. Shoutout to Palmer for a decent run in the Renault which he sadly messed up by turning in too late and spinning on the dirty tyre leftovers at turn 4.

I'll swing back round and do Silverstone later, but first to quickly score yesterday's excitement in case it somehow slips from my memory.

Hungary:

Merc:
Ham - 6
Ros - 5

Ferrari:
Seb - 6
Kimi - 8

Williams - almost at a loss how to score Massa, he (his car?) was so slow:

Button - 5 - tricky to score due to car issues

Manor:

Haas:
Grosjean - 5
Guti - 6 - one bonus point for naughtily delaying Lewis, one of the few memorable moments of race.

Quote from: ChrillYou made me edit Sainz. Kvyat really was awful, and Sainz was fantastic.

Wonder what Kvyat will be doing in 2017... because he sure as hell won't be driving for Toro Rosso.

The way he's been driving since joining Toro Rosso implies an inability to handle setbacks. F1 drivers must be able to handle setbacks. I don't see why any team would want to sign him. Damaged goods, you know. I see Camara or Gasly getting a drive at Toro Rosso alongside Sainz.

I'd rather see Toro Rosso sign someone else though. Someone outside Red Bull. Their current youth isn't really good enough. I'd quite like to see Maximilian Günther (GER) or Ralf Aron (EST) (yes. Estonia) drive Toro Rosso next year.

EDIT: Or Joey Mawson, 2nd year in Formula 4 and the only one beating Mick Schumacher.

I am appalled by the penalty handed to Rosberg. Verstappen has moved under braking twice. This clearly means that the stewards deem such a move OK. I cannot believe it. Even worse when Rosberg got 2 penalty points for his move. Sure, he turned in unnecessarily late and he did so in part to show Verstappen. Then again, his line through the corner was badly affected by Verstappen moving about after hitting his brakes. Absurd. Absolutely absurd. This stewards decision is among the worst since I started watching, that's for sure.

Driver of the weekend is a tie for me, Hamilton and Ricciardo. Shoutouts to Jenson Button, Pascal Wehrlein and Marcus Ericsson. Finally a good race for the Swede. One advantage of watching the Swedish broadcast is that the commentary focuses on Marcus and therefore inevitably focuses on the drivers around him. Makes it a lot easier for me to grade the backmarkers every week.

Felipe Massa takes the Worst Driver of the Weekend score once again, with a really bad race.

EDIT: Allow me to add a comment on the Rosberg-Verstappen incident. Penalising Rosberg was correct. Not penalising Verstappen is the absurd bit.

Verstappen's so good he's allowed to move in the braking zone, didn't anyone tell you?

I'll get round to Silverstone at some point, but first Germany:

Merc:
Ham - 8
Ros - 4 - awful start & seriously dumb move on Max; didn't even throw in a little lock-up to suggest he couldn't make the corner

Ferrari - what a painfully average performance by the team:
Seb - 5
Kimi - 5

Williams:
Bottas - 6 - ran too long on final set of tyres, surely lost more time than from taking another pit-stop?
Massa - x - car damage after Palmer (my great pick!) hit him on lap 1.

RB:
Max - 5 - seemingly won't stop moving in braking zone until someone ploughs into him and gets launched through the air.
Dan - 7

FI:
Perez - 6
Hulk - 7

Renault:
Son of Magnus - 6
Son of Palmer - 4 - extra point off for hitting Massa

TR:
Kvyat - 5 - not quite so terrible this time... but still not good.
Sainz - 5

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 6
Oates - 4

McLaren - both cars suffered from need to conserve fuel in final stint, costing Alonso 10th place - credit to Button for having just enough at end to attack Bottas:
Alonso - 6
Button - 8

Manor:
Wehrlein - 6
Harry - 5

Haas:
Grosjean - 7
Guti - 8

Lots of X today, but then again lots of drivers disappeared early on. No Wehrleins, Buttons, Ericssons, Sainzes or Magnussens!

Driver of the race for me is the Hulk, honorable mentions to Alonso and Perez.

Worst driver of the race is Verstappen for sure, what a mess he made. You can't win a race on lap 1 but you can easily lose it. He failed to understand that. Honorable mention to Nasr who couldn't even keep up with debut driver Esteban Ocon, and to Jolyon Palmer for simply being nowhere for most of the race.

Belgium:

Merc - both drove to car's potential with neither doing anything fancy:
Ham - 7
Ros - 7

Ferrari - can't disagree with your scores here:
Seb - 6
Kimi - 6

Williams - or here:
Bottas - 6
Massa - 5

RB:
Max - 2 - both for qualifying performance.  As I said after Germany: seemingly won't stop moving in braking zone until someone ploughs into him and gets launched through the air; though he's mixing it up for us as dangerous move not in braking zone this time, just at an incredibly fast section of circuit.
Dan - 7

FI:
Perez - 9
Hulk - 9

Renault:
Son of Magnus - 2 - crashed.
Son of Palmer - 4 - didn't crash.

TR:
Kvyat - 4
Sainz - X

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - X - can't remember why he retired.
Oates - 4

McLaren:
Alonso - 9
Button - X

Manor:
Wehrlein - 3 - strong in qualifying but misjudged gap/braking and needlessly crashed into Jenson on lap 1.
Ocon - 6 - solid first outing.

Haas:
Grosjean - 5
Guti - 6

Quote from: ChrillChrill's mate Marcus retired with a faulty gearbox. He couldn't enter fifth gear nor could he go through it. Being limited to gears 1-4 isn't a great way to race. Probably related to the ERS issues he suffered all weekend. The new Ferrari engine seems unreliable to say the least, I believe Nasr had engine problems too.

Felipe Nasr – 6/10

McLaren:
Jenson Button – 5/10
Fernando Alonso – 8/10

Manor:
Esteban Ocon – 2/10 (he was utterly nowhere. 4-5 seconds slower per lap for most of time. Such a very bad race. I got the feeling he simply couldn't cope with the Singapore humidity)
Pascal Wehrlein – 5/10

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – X/10
Esteban Gutierrez – 7/10

My driver of the day is arguably Kevin Magnussen. He did was Ericsson was supposed to do. The difference is that Magnussen made it happen. Let's call it a Magnussen-Vettel tie.

Worst driver of the day is Esteban Ocon by far, but an honorable mention to my fellow Swede, son of Eric. Simply a very bad race.

Quote from: ChrillIn hindsight, I realised Manor must have left Ocon on the ultra soft for far too long just to stop Ericsson. Ericsson pitted earlier, was very fast in no traffic but got caught behind Sainz, Button, Ocon. Had there not been an Ocon lapping many seconds slower, Ericsson would have probably emerged somewhere around P7 after the first round of pit stops. Manor totally bollocksed Ocon's race to stop Ericsson from running in the points. They were very successful too, Ericsson being unable to pass. Once clear of the Manor, his tyres were in much too bad shape.

Your scoring looks solid, not sure mine will differ that much.

Singapore:

Merc:
Ham - 6
Ros - 9 - tempted to bump him to 10 for smashing Hamilton in qualifying, but then again he barely hung on for the victory.

Kimi - 8

Fernando Alonso – 6/10

Manor:
Esteban Ocon – 7/10
Pascal Wehrlein – 5/10

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 7/10
Esteban Gutierrez – 5/10

Driver of the day? Rosberg. Honorable mention? Maybe Verstappen. Overall a weekend with several good drives but few great drives.

Having just spent a full week carefully considering the Malaysian race (that or I forgot to post any ratings) my Japan time will be later today/tomorrow.

Great news, it is now officially Japan time!

Merc:
Ham - 7 - fluffed another start but solid drive after that
Ros - 9

Ferrari:
Seb - 7
Kimi - 8 - sodding gearbox penalty.  Endless bloody grid penalties for using too many engines/turbos/MGU-whatsits and DRS overtakes that can't be safely defended, oh for a simpler approach where drivers can push their cars and changes of position aren't mostly tedious one-sided affairs.

Williams:
Bottas - 7

Quote from: ChrillAhead of the UNITED STATES Grand Prix in TEXASSSSS, I have discovered that Excel can actually do the averages for me. Great stuff.

So this is the averages from Monaco to Japan:

Best drivers (highest avg. rating):
Chrill:
1: Daniel Ricciardo - 7.583
2: Sebastian Vettel - 7.091
3: Lewis Hamilton - 7.083
Penfold:
1: Daniel Riccairdo - 7.700
2: Sergio Perez - 7.400
3: Fernando Alonso - 7.300

Worst driver (lowest avg. rating):
Chrill:
1: Rio Haryanto - 4.142 (well this rating isn't changing)
2: Felipe Nasr - 4.667
3: Felipe Massa - 4.917
Penfold:
1: Felipe Nasr - 4.400
2: Rio Haryanto - 4.600
3: Kevin Magnussen - 4.889

While you failed to maintain a Kvyat 4.00 rating (he's now 5.111), you are at least sticking to one decimal for all but one of the above 6. Impressive. Also interesting how our best drivers are now the same.

The driver with the biggest difference between us is logically Marcus Ericsson. I've rated him higher than you on average and that is no surprise. He's averaging 5.700 with me and 5.000 with you (still these damn even numbers). The difference was larger before, but he's been getting high points from us both lately. Also affected by me rating him highly in a race you did not rate at all (Canada) where I gave him 8. Without that rating, I'd be 5.44 on Marcus and the biggest gap between two driver ratings would be Max Verstappen (me 6.417, you 5.900).

GOOD STUFF. Race tonight, I do like me them evening races.

Quote from: ChrillLet's rate Austin, TX before I go to work!

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 9/10 (sort of hard to rate his performance, but he did nothing wrong so this feels fair)
Nico Rosberg – 7/10

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 6/10
Kimi Räikkönen – 7/10

Williams:
Valtteri Bottas – 4/10
Felipe Massa – 8/10

Red Bull:
Max Verstappen – 5/10
Daniel Ricciardo – 8/10

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 7/10
Nico Hülkenberg – X/10

Renault:
Kevin Magnussen – 6/10
Jolyon Palmer – 6/10

Toro Rosso:
Daniil Kvyat – 6/10
Carlos Sainz Jr – 10/10 (Remember, that Ferrari engine is OLD. He fought down Massa and only just lost out to Alonso at the end. Great stuff)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 8/10 (drove a stupidly long stint in hopes his tyres would last. Ran P11 until the end when they simply dropped off. Should have pitted for super softs with 10 laps to go, he would have finished P11 then. Only needed one top10 guy to DNF and Sauber would have had their points)
Felipe Nasr – 6/10

McLaren:
Jenson Button – 7/10
Fernando Alonso – 9/10

Manor:
Esteban Ocon – 5/10
Pascal Wehrlein – 5/10

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 8/10
Esteban Gutierrez – 6/10 (hard to rate since he DNFed after some 15ish laps)

Driver of the day? Alonso or Sainz. Honorable mention to Lewis Hamilton.

Can't believe you've got Vettel in second spot... he keeps hitting people at the starts!  As for my Magnussen score, I simply can't apologise enough, felt certain I had him bang on 4.9.

Okay, Austin it is - though bear in mind my viewing was a highlights programme which ended at 1 A.M., so memory may be off a little:

Merc:
Ham - 9 - not exactly scintillating pace compared to Nico but pole and no mistakes
Ros - 8 - just a notch off Lewis in quali and in hindsight should've taken the inside of turn 1 to secure second place, rather than trying to attack Ham round outside and let others (Dan) run him wide; race pace in clean air seemed comparable to Hammy.

Ferrari:
Seb - 6 - out-qualified and generally uninspiring (bet he's thrilled to be down on Red Bull's pace).  Alonso did say he was leaving Ferrari because with current structure they are capable of only second or third best, but then Seb won a few races last year and people were convinced the prancing horse would be right back at the top.  Nope, not this year, not next, and not the one after that....
Kimi - 8 - somewhat baffled by team's pit-stop strategy (especially not stopping him during virtual safety car), but then all irrelevant as they killed his race anyway.

Williams:
Bottas - 5
Massa - 7

RB:
Max - 7 - a tad slower than Dan and another point off for pitting when not told to "box, box, box".
Dan - 9 - flawless drive, any chance of taking second ruined by VSC

FI:
Perez - 7 - poor qualifying compromised his race - don't put yourself in a position to be hit by Kvyat!  Even allowing for the collision, with such a strong car I was surprised he wasn't able to take Massa, Sainz, and Alonso.
Hulk - X - too many of these recently

Renault:
Son of Magnus - 6
Son of Palmer - 6

TR:
Kvyat - 5 - miles off his teammate, clipped Perez.
Sainz - 10 - don't give out many of these but such a great weekend from Carlos

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 8
Oates - 5

McLaren - back up to pace:
Alonso - 10 - gave him an extra point for audacious move on Massa
Button - 7

Manor:
Wehrlein - 6
Ocon - 6

Haas:
Grosjean - 7
Guti - 5

Quote from: ChrillYou're right. Sainz is a 10, I'll edit that. He could have done nothing better. Brilliant.

Yeah, for me Carlos was a definite 10; Alonso not so clear-cut but just gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Sainz as driver of the day for me.

Quote from: ChrillDid I rate Ericsson too low?

http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/10630380/united-states-gp-driver-ratings

Sky Sports are saying Ericsson was one of the very best drivers yesterday, only bettered by Alonso and Hamilton (9.5/10), and tied with Sainz and Ricciardo for 9/10. Yay for Swede.

I've dropped Vettel to P5, with Perez in P4.

Wow, seems I've been harsh on Ericsson - as you mentioned I did miss out Canada where he performed strongly, so skewed his overall somewhat - but I am going to bump him up a point for Austin.

Re: SkySports scoring: I know this is all subjective but they rated Bottas 7 and Massa 6 when we both have Felipe winning that contest.  And a 9.5 for Hamilton & 8.5 for Button?  Looks like you get an extra bump for being British... or worse do they actually see Hamilton's drive as more impressive than what Sainz managed?

Quote from: ChrillDefinitely a bump for being British in Sky Sports. But then again, Ericsson gets a bump from being Swedish by me so it's only expected. We try to be neutral, but it will shine through over the course of a season :P

You bumping Ericsson brings him to 5.200, so still a neat and round digit but only enough to put him P4 in your stats.

MF1 Ratings Excel Document
I found a slightly odd website where I could upload the Excel doc. It doesn't look as pretty as it does in my computer but its OK if you want to mull over the digits.

At least Ericsson isn't tied with Kvyat, I couldn't let that stand.  Three more races for Marcus to add to his tally and for Daniil to woefully underperform.

A two for Max... that's even harsher than I have in mind.
He was going for a 6, but I deducted two for shunting Rosberg off the track (you don't mess with the championship contenders when you're out of contention. Not that Verstappens cares) at the start, and another two for running wide in order to keep Vettel behind and then being a little bitch about it.

Verstappen is a fantastic driver but definitely needs to learn some manners. At the moment, we need to let Rosberg and Hamilton battle it out. You don't force them off the track into turn 1. Had Rosberg crashed out there, Verstappen would have decided the championship in Hamilton's favor. The Dutchman would probably just reply "OK. I don't care. That's not my problem" and carry on with his day.

Quote from: PenfoldAgree with you on Ericsson, I had fingers crossed that someone up ahead would do the decent thing and retire.
Yeah, when Hülkenberg spun after dancing with Raikkonen even the Swedish commentary was shouting at him to retire. Not that they wish him any bad, but simply because they were hoping for a points scoring position for Marcus. Neutral commentary? Nah!

I am no fan of Verstappen but that was the drive of the season for sure. Alternate lines, finding speed where nobody else could. He was always on the attack. Had he not pitted for inters and then back to full wets, he would have challenged Hamilton for the win.

Honorable mentions to Nasr, Sainz and Perez. Perhaps Ocon too.

I considered giving a 10 to Nico for being WDC but figured this only rates his race performance and not the circumstances surrounding it. Same goes for Button and Massa.

No 9s or 10s handed out, I am a bit of a cheapskate here apparently. Low rating for Lewis since he disobeyed clear Mercedes team orders (-1) and since he prioritised Lewis over Mercedes (-2). Nico only gets a 6, because even though Lewis slowed him down, Lewis always managed to get something like 1.1 or 1.2 seconds at the first DRS measure. Nico never was able to catch Lewis despite Lewis driving slowly.

DOTW is hard to hand out this weekend, but perhaps Vettel should have it. Honorable mentions to not many people.

I'll do mine later - I suspect they'll be much the same as yours.  Agree it's probably Seb for DOTW, though Max provided good entertainment as he came up the field.

Quote from: ChrillI'm expecting some lovely ratings from you. I will then compile our results and we shall name THE BEST AND WORST of 2016.

Abu Dhabi:

Merc:
Ham - 7 - didn't care for tactic of backing Rosberg into others and I thought he was depressingly ungracious in defeat; however, I'm scoring off his driving and since he smashed it in qualifying and displayed considerable skill in controlling the gap to Nico he gets a seven.
Ros - 7 - quite a chunk off Lewis in qualifying but did what he needed to in the race, bold move on Max gets +1.

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - great drive, just a pity he can only get close to the Mercs when they're operating well below full speed - don't expect anything better in 2017!
Kimi - 6 - disappointing after his quali effort

Williams:
Bottas - 6
Massa - 7 - ninth place about all the car has in it these days.  They switched development to next year's challenger some time back so hopefully come out stronger in Australia.

RB:
Max - 9 - clawed his way back up the field and then stretched the life of those super-softs to allow a one-stopper and a chance of the podium.
Dan - 6

FI:
Perez - 6
Hulk - 7

Renault:
Son of Magnus - 4
Son of Palmer - 5

TR:
Kvyat - 5
Sainz - 5

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 6

The driver with the most scores of 10 overall:
1. Daniel Ricciardo (Penfold 2 + Chrill 1)
1. Max Verstappen (Penfold 2 + Chrill 1)
3. Carlos Sainz Jr (Penfold 1 + Chrill 1)
3. Pascal Wehrlein (Penfold 1 + Chrill 1)
5. Fernando Alonso (Penfold 1)
5. Nico Rosberg (Penfold 1)
5. Sergio Perez (Penfold 1)

You're clearly more kind in handing out 10s.

The worst weekend of any driver this season (since Monaco) was:
1. Daniil Kvyat - 2.000 (Penfold 2/10, Chrill 2/10) - Grand Prix de Monaco
2. Kevin Magnussen - 2.000 (Penfold 2/10, Chrill X/10) - Grote Prijs van België (Belgium)
3. Felipe Nasr - 2.500 (Penfold 2/10, Chrill 3/10) - Gran Premio d'Italia
3. Max Verstappen - 2.500 (Penfold 2/10, Chrill 3/10 - Grote Prijs van België (Belgium)

The best weekend of any driver is obviously a tie at 10 points. Chronological order of who achieved it first:
1: Daniel Ricciardo - 10.000 - Grand Prix de Monaco
1: Pascal Wehrlein - 10.000 - Großer Preis von Österreich (Austria)
1: Carlos Sainz Jr - 10.000 - United States Grand Prix
1: Max Verstappen  -10.000 - Grande Prêmio do Brasil

And the final stat I can think of now. Since Daniel Ricciardo won both our rankings, I think it'd be interesting to take a look at his three worst weekends:
1. 日本グランプリ (Japan) - 5.500 (Penfold 5/10, Chrill 6/10)
2. Grand Prix of Europe (Azerbaijan) - 6.000 (Penfold 6/10, Chrill 6/10)
3. Grande Prêmio do Brasil - 6.000 (Penfold 6/10, Chrill 6/10)

That is a heck of a high average. He scored one 5 this season, all other ratings were 6 or higher.

Sounds good.

Hmm, so it's a three-way tie for first... I'm glad Dan sneaked it on count back.  World Champion comes in fifth and a lowly eighth, I suppose put that down to solid but unexciting drives - and probably points lost when he forgot how to turn into tight corners.  Broad agreement in our scoring for most drivers but approx. half a point difference in a couple of cases: your love of Marcus Ericsson shining through  ;)  and I got terribly excited (at least compared to you) by Ocon's drives.

Huh, just thought of another stat you could do: points difference between team-mates.

Well, cheers for compiling all that.  Next year I'll try not to miss out any races.
Rosberg was at his best early in the season, Hamilton toward the second part. We started rating in Monaco. I believe Rosberg would be higher up had we done this for the entire season.

Indeed, me rating Ericsson higher was to be expected. Then again, we both rate him way above Nasr. Interesting to see my low ratings for Ocon, because I do hold him in high regard for the future.
