Formula One / Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 10/10
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 9/10
Max Verstappen - 9/10 (Should have won, wasted his chance)

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10
Lando Norris - 8/10

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 3/10 (Bad luck in qualifying, compounded by a penalty, compounded by again locking up into someone else for no reason)
Lance Stroll - 7/10 (Car doesn't seem that good this year)

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10
Esteban Ocon - 6/10

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 9/10
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 6/10
Yuki Tsunoda - 8/10

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 (Was he even in the race?)

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 0/10 (If not for qualifying, I would have given him a 1)
Mick Schumacher - 6/10 (Did the exact same thing as Mazepin, just avoided the walls)

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 7/10
George Russell - 8/10

A lot of 7s this week because it's hard to say exactly how everyone performed relative to their cars.

Spartan is against the change to logos. He never posts here, but I can relay his opinion anyway.

The green makes no sense to me. The white actually looked good and stands out even more.

I really like the look of the Haas if you ignore the context.

The Sennas, Schumachers, and Hamiltons drive for the best teams because they're great drivers. That's not why they drive the best cars, that's mostly luck and good timing. Which we've seen with Hamilton himself, who went from dominant championship contender with a great McLaren to inconsistent good driver with a worse McLaren to dominant championship contender with a great Mercedes. Or Alonso, who was dominant in the best cars and not able to pull worse cars to a championship. Or Vettel, who was dominant in the best car, competitive in a close car, and shit in a mediocre car.

If he leaves before the new car comes out...

I bought and watched all of the season review DVDs from 2003-19, and I have a few conclusions. One of which is that Hamilton has become overrated, his car has been just as dominant as Vettel's was during the RBR run and he hasn't had any teammate competition since Rosberg left. When Rosberg was there, he was just as much of an asshole as any other driver in that sort of position and did make some mistakes. Similarly, I think Rosberg has become underrated, to most people he's now just that guy who got lucky and beat Hamilton once. Bottas is overrated, he's fine but he puts up 1/10th the fight that Rosberg did. I think Vettel is a little underrated from a career perspective, but the last two seasons he has truly been not good at all.

Which is not to say that Hamilton isn't the best F1 driver ever. This is F1. It's basically impossible to properly analyze this, everyone in the conversation got most of their results in the best car at the time.

Pierre Gasly is not very good and very well could lose to Tsunoda. That is my thought.

If Ocon gets dropped from Renault then he'll just be gone.

I don't think any of them should be higher than a 2. Ericsson and Grosjean should be 1 unless we're including one-offs or something. Ferrucci should be a 1 because there's no way European teams are touching him, he's not good enough anyway, and he's moving to NASCAR now.

I would put everyone as a 1 other than Herta and O'Ward, who would be 2. IndyCar isn't seen as a feeder to F1 now, and they would have to break through the existing F1 ladder that is already over-filled. And I think it's unlikely that anyone dominates IndyCar enough to do that because that's just not how IndyCar works.

It's basically impossible for me to rate Grosjean or Magnussen. Their car was junk and they're not that different from each other on performance, so who knows?

Vergne: Beat Kvyat (and got fired for it!)
Ricciardo: (Lost to Kvyat, but Kvyat got dropped soon after!)
Sainz: Beat Kvyat
Albon: Didn't beat Kvyat (and got promoted for it!)
Gasly: Beat Kvyat

Maybe Red Bull (and everyone else) needs to stop comparing people to Kvyat. This is the first time I've ever realized that the only teammate Kvyat has ever beaten in points over a full season is Ricciardo, probably the best teammate he has had.

They just do it for fun anyway, it might even attract more drivers.

Stroll in 15th makes no sense. Perez blew him away in points down the stretch, but Stroll did have a bunch of issues that were not his fault during that stretch.

1. Hamilton
2. Verstappen
3. Perez

I don't think any driver was truly bad. Vettel, Giovinazzi, Latifi, and Albon are my bottom four (not in order) because they were convincingly beaten by their teammates. Pretty much everyone else falls somewhere in the middle. Ricciardo would be ahead of Ocon and Gasly ahead of Kvyat. I don't see much of a separation between Norris and Sainz or Magnussen and Grosjean.

Perez is my favorite driver and he did a great job, but I don't think he should be ahead of Max. Max absolutely destroyed his teammate and was an easy third (or better) almost every race he didn't have problems. He also didn't make many mistakes. Perez came on strong at the end of the season, but Stroll was competitive with him fairly often and the early season was a bunch of missed opportunities.
