Title: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on March 17, 2019, 01:25:37 PM
Yes! You've missed this, haven't you? Please all feel free to rate the drivers, and I'll go create a new lovely spreadsheet like the one from last year.

EDIT: Here's the spreadsheet. If your name isn't there, just post here with your ratings anyway. I'll add it to the list!

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 5/10 (Lost at the start, and then drove a very uninspired race only just keeping Verstappen at bay)
Valtteri Bottas - 10/10 (He called it his best race of his career and I'm inclined to agree. 26 points, not a bad haul for a weekend. Obviously the first time leading the championship for Bottas)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 5/10 (Faded after his first stop and deserved no more than P5)
Charles Leclerc - 7/10 (Solid start to his Ferrari career, ending up clearly faster than Vettel but unable to attack him for position)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 4/10 (Started way back through no fault of his own, but whilst others could overtake here, he just could not. Poor. Very poor, even. Stuck behind Kvyat despite having much softer and much fresher tyres. Not acceptable. Did he forget he was driving for Red Bull and simply settled? One wonders.)
Max Verstappen - 9/10 (Honda returns to the podium, and it is all becase of Maximus Verstappi. Strong race, beautiful overtake on Vettel)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - X/10 (Drove his car into a ditch, suffered rather severe damage, ended up retiring. Sad)
Nico Hülkenberg - 8/10 (Not a bad effort, P7. Kept Räikkönen behind him all race but never could challenge Magnussen)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 6/10 (A Haas retiring after a failed pit stop? In Australia? That sounds familiar. Hounded Magnussen before retiring)
Kevin Magnussen - 8/10 (Best of the rest, and only 30 seconds behind Leclerc too. Also, the only "midfield" driver to remain on the racing lap)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 7/10 (Like Gasly, he struggled to overtake whilst others did it more easily. Still, a decent debut for sure and promises more to come. An extra point for an incredibly strong qualifying, P8)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 5/10 (Was he in the race? Really? I remember his engine going smokey smokey but that's about it. Invisible)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 6/10 (Faded after a poorly executed strategy and got stuck behind Lando "How do I overtake?" Norris. Once Norris found his way past Giovinazzi, Perez did too and also passed Albon for good measure. By then, it was too late)
Lance Stroll - 8/10 (Huh. I was ready to write him off after a poor qualifying in Saturday. He redeemed himself nicely to take two points thanks in large to Norris hanging around behind Giovinazzi half the race. Strategy played to his advantage, but he was wise enough to use it)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10 (Followed Hülkenberg all race, and ended up scoring some decent points. Aided by a slow team mate holding up most of the grid)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 3/10 (This was a proper rookie debut. My favorite moment? Oh, when Magnussen pretended to have a look down the inside causing Giovinazzi to literally drive off the circuit in panic. Proper rookie mistake, that. He needs to improve fast, this did not impress his friends at Maranello)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 7/10 (Acceptable debut for sure, strong qualifying. Also caught behind Norris, and accidentally lost a place to Perez in the Trulli train. Decent)
Daniil Kvyat - 9/10 (The Torpedo is back, angrier than ever, but perhaps also more mature. He wanted that final point, and he made sure he got it)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - X/10 (It's unfair to rate Williams because this was essentially a testing session. Ricciardo was a minute behind Russell but managed to catch and overtake him despite driving a broken Renault. Very last)
Robert Kubica - X/10 (Even laster than Russell. I don't know what to rate him, maybe low? How poor is the car, and how poor was he? I cannot tell yet)

Happy to see you back at the rating game, you dropped off severely last year  :P

Hamilton 8 though? He finished a full 30 seconds behind his team mate, mind you. It's your call!

Now this is going to be tricky for me this year, limited as I am to extended highlights of the races.  Oh well, here goes nothing....

Merc:
Hammy - 6 - Poor start, was pitted early to cover Vettel, then seemed to lose interest as Bottas was out of reach.
Val - 10 - Everything crossed he can take the fight to Lewis throughout 2019.

Ferrari:
Seb - 6 - Seemed to have run out of tyres by the end and was 'lucky' not to be attacked by Leclerc.
'It is I' - 7 - Decent enough start to his Ferrari career.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 4 - I know it's not the easiest track on which to overtake, but come on....
Max - 9 - Well deserved podium.

Renault:
The Pie Man - X - Unlucky to be squeezed by Perez who himself was being squeezed by Hulk.
Hulk - 8 - Fine.

Haas:
Big Jean - 7 - Was with K Mag until he made the crucial error of pitting a Haas in Melbourne.
Son of Magnus - 8 - Not taken out by his own pit crew.  An unexpected result.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 7 - Bonus point for Saturday's efforts; too tentative in attacking Giovinazzi on the Sunday.
Rally Guy's Son - X - Engine (or some part thereof) died after 9 laps.  Not the most auspicious start for the Renaults.

Racing Point:
Perez - 6 - Beaten by Stroll.
The Stroller - 8 - He was, erm, stronger than Perez round here.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 7 - Okay.
Adam Ant - 3 - The only way is up, as Yazz once sang.

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 6 - Reasonable rookie race result.
The Torpedo - 8 - A promising start to this next stage of his F1 life.

Williams: (Hopefully they can close this gap to the other teams)
Jack - X- I'll go with the 'this car is so bad it's impossible to rate drivers right now' approach.
One-Armed Bandit - X

... and you scored Sainz even though his engine died after 9 laps - that's why you didn't notice him in the race!

That early? Hmm, I guess the race was dull at the start because I thought he was in it for at least 50% of the race.

Here's our ratings after race 1 then. Assuming Matt nor anyone else joins in:

Nice.  Is the 'Difference to Leader' column a new feature, or is my memory of last year's table just that bad?
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on March 18, 2019, 07:55:24 AM
Your memory is that bad. This one is identical, except I've added some features that will make replacement drivers easier to handle. All the calculations are the same, including the "Difference to leader". That one is very simple, it just compares the drivers rating to whoever is top. In Bottas' case, it simply says "F2-F2" (F2 is the cell. Obviously).

I've also, for good reason, updated the list of races to reflect the 2019 calendar. I felt it was wise to do so. And I've gone for a different font. Other than that, it's all the same. I was happy with the layout in 2018 so no need to change it up much.

EDIT: I had made an oopsie for the "Compiled Ratings" page, but that's fixed now.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 6/10 (Yeah, "floor damage." Sure, buddy.)
Valtteri Bottas - 10/10

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10
Charles Leclerc - 7/10

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 6/10 (Got unlucky with quals, but didn't impress a ton in the race either.)
Max Verstappen - 9/10

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 5/10
Nico Hülkenberg - 7/10

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 7/10
Kevin Magnussen - 9/10

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 7/10
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 6/10

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 6/10
Lance Stroll - 7/10

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 6/10
Daniil Kvyat - 8/10

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 7/10
Robert Kubica - 4/10 (Bad qualifying followed by a bad race, even with the bad car).

A lot of average scores this week, but it's hard to give a stronger rating when we don't have a good picture of the car capabilities.

Yes. He finished second and secured a 1-2 for Merc. Had the drivers been reversed, I think most people would be comfortable giving Bottas an 8 for finishing second.

I won't be able to do every race this year, but I will try to do more.  ;)
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on March 20, 2019, 04:44:54 AM
Had Bottas qualified P1, lost that in the start and ended up 30 seconds adrift then no, he'd be a 5 or 6 :P
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on March 20, 2019, 05:13:41 AM
I was somewhat tempted to give Lewis a seven, but I couldn't bring myself to award him a whole extra point over Vettel.  Mind you, I only gave Bottas a ten because of his winning margin over Hammy; the Merc clearly had the beating of all other cars in Melbourne so it wasn't exactly remarkable that he won the race.  Like Matt said, this malarkey will be a lot easier after a few races when we've got a handle on the competitiveness of all the cars.

I added Matt's scores, so the Australian GP is now complete in terms of the ratings:

Driver = Driver
Pos. = Position
Prev. = Position after previous race (well, P20 for all yeah?)
+/- = Ratings change from previous race
Act Avg = Our average rating of the driver
Diff. to Leader = How far behind they are to the driver in P1
DRIVER                  POS.    PREV.   +/- ACT AVG DIFF. TO LEADER
Valtteri Bottas 1 20 +19 10.000 0.000

Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 (In a very Hamiltonian way, he picked up the win when the others failed. This is typical of him. Had nothing on Leclerc, but +1 point for simply outdriving Vettel. Great stuff)
Valtteri Bottas - 6/10 (Was up in P2 at the start, taking both Hamilton and Leclerc, before fading. Still, he maintains the championship lead courtesy of that Australia fast lap)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 4/10 (Well, this spin was very 2018 of Vettel. Is he already shaken by the fact Leclerc can match him? Maybe, time will tell. Still, a stupid spin saw him lose a certain top two finish)
Charles Leclerc - 10/10 (Wow. Massive gap to everyone in all three qualifying sessions, then regains the lead easily despite a rocky start. Then, his 5-cylinder Ferrari failed to match the 6-cylinder Mercedes. Agonising to watch)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 3/10 (Horrid performance really. Only just survived into Q2, was nowhere near Q3, and then drove that Red Bull like a Toro Rosso for much of the race. Albon and Kvyat both kept up with him)
Max Verstappen - 7/10 (Best of the rest in qualifying by sheer willpower, and very nearly got a lucky podium. Was harsh with Sainz but drove a clean race overall. More mature than in 2018, and so far very capable of leading the team)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 (Well that was painful, but they ran best of the rest before that)
Nico Hülkenberg - 8/10 (Well that was painful, but they ran best of the rest before that)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - X/10 (Lost out to Stroll in the start and never found his way back)
Kevin Magnussen - 5/10 (That car was nowhere near as fast on Sunday as it was on Saturday. Big shame, because he could have been challenging for that final podium had his car run well and had Renault not double-DNFed)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 10/10 (You can ask nothing more. Q3, again, followed by some mighty racing. Did you see how he deliberately did not pass before the DRS line into Turn 1, just to get DRS on that second straight? Mature driving, impressive)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - X/10 (My third of the week in MF1! After Saturday, I felt happy. After Sunday, I did not. Shame to see him retire after battling a Red Bull for genuine position)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 7/10 (Salvaged points with what looks like a car that maybe should not be up there in Bahrain. Decent stuff, kept out of trouble when it hit others around him)
Lance Stroll - 5/10 (Now this was more like the Stroll we remember from Williams. Mediocre and running at the back of the midfield)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 9/10 (So far, he's been a stroke of genius at Sauber. Strong driving, only beaten by Norris in the midfield battle. Easily outclassing his team mate)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 (Hit Kvyat, then kept himself out of the points. Not a very convincing start to his F1 career. Mind you, it was his 4th GP and by now he should be closer to Raikkonen although perhaps not yet ahead of him)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 8/10 (Some really nice driving, a couple times very close to other drivers but never over the limit. Well deserved first points of his F1 career, only just behind Gasly in the Red Bull)
Daniil Kvyat - 7/10 (Was snapping on Albon's tail, battling with the young team mate, before being spanked by Big Tony in the Alfauber.

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 7/10 (I guess I can rate them today. These guys are in a league of their own, and not in a good way. Kept out of trouble and ran ahead of some drivers at the start. Beat Kubica)
Robert Kubica - 7/10 (I guess I can rate them today. These guys are in a league of their own, and not in a good way. Kept out of trouble and ran ahead of many drivers at the start before dropping behind Russell. Did not beat Kubica, is Kubica)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 8/10
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 6/10 (Personally, I blame him for the incident. Was doing well until then.)

'Twas a racing incident but I'd say caused more by Sainz than Verstappen.  I know how good the Red Bulls are on their brakes, absolutely everyone knows what a determined little bugger is Max, so why on earth did Carlos sweep across on the normal racing line?  Of course Maxi would be right there on the inside of the corner making life as difficult as possible for Carly S.

Scores later today.

Does this answer your question...

Bahrain:

Merc:
Hammy - 8 - Is he going to be bested by Bottas in 2019... no chance.
Val - 6 - Good drive for a no. 2.

Ferrari:
Seb - 4 - Poor drive for a no. 2; just terrible for the supposed no. 1.
'It is I' - 10 - Iffy start, nice move on Seb to recover the lead, flawless drive thereafter.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 4 - Must do better.  Hopefully he'll get dialled into the car before too long.
Max - 8 - Always dialled in.

Renault:
The Pie Man - 7 - Double failure on same lap, not something you see every day.
Hulk - 8 - Had the edge on Dan in the race.

Haas:
Big Jean - X - Screwed his weekend with silly mistake in qualifying.  Hit by Stroll in a race, by no means an exclusive club.
Son of Magnus - 4 - Fast Saturday, slow Sunday.  Don't know why.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 9 - Very strong rookie effort, and delightful to see McLaren with a decent car.
Rally Guy's Son - 5 - Good quali and first bit of race; clipped Max, suffered a puncture, didn't bother to finish.

Racing Point:
Perez - 7 - Car seems middling, he did okay with it.
The Stroller - 4 - Needlessly hit Grosjean and was slower than Perez.  Apart from that a great weekend....

Alfauber:
Kimi - 8 - This chaps not that bad.
Adam Ant - 5 - This chaps not that good (at least at the moment).

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 8 - One for the rookie over the returnee.
The Torpedo - 7 - Eclipsed by the Blur, clipped by the Ant.

Williams: (Hopefully they can close this gap to the other teams)
Jack - 6 - Circulated without fanfare or incident.
One-Armed Bandit - 6 - Likewise.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 (Back to normal. Took the start, never looked back, victory never in doubt)
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 (Lost the start, but kept P2 safe from the Ferraris)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10 (Battled nicely with Verstappen to defend P3, and ended up where he started ahead of his team mate)
Charles Leclerc - 6/10 (Got handed a poor strategy and could not make it work)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 (Considering he's still way behind Verstappen, at least this was a step in the right direction. Bonus point for fastest lap)
Max Verstappen - 8/10 (Battled with the Ferraris but never too harshly. Nicely judged)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 (He was virtually unseen throughout the race, which I suppose is the hallmark of a good race for a midfield driver. Best of the rest)
Nico Hülkenberg - 6/10 (EDIT: oops I forgot to rate Nico. Guess he was just that uninspiring here)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 5/10 (Not good enough. The Haas car seems to work well only in Australia. Shame)
Kevin Magnussen - 4/10 (Like Roro but weaker)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - X/10 (Torpedoed by the Torpedo)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - X/10 (Torpedoed by the Torpedo)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 8/10 (Considering that the car does not look very strong, this was a powerful drive. He can be happy with that)
Lance Stroll - 6/10 (More like what we can expect from the Force Racing Poindiant)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 (He keeps getting more out of the Alfa than he should. Or maybe it actually is a good car, and his team mate is just bad)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 4/10 (Starting to become a worrying trend now. Three races in, this was when Leclerc caught Ericsson. Sure, Ericsson is no Kimi, but as it seems Giovinazzi is no Leclerc either)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 10/10 (From the pits to the points? Good work. He made some spaces up early on, got into the groove, and simply got revenge for his crash in FP3)
Daniil Kvyat - 6/10 (A penalty I consider unfair demoted him to the back of the race, and he was chanceless)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 8/10 (Ran pretty high up front for a while, staying out of trouble. Ended up beating Kubica despite an extra pit stop)
Robert Kubica - 5/10 (Really lacks race pace, but at least he qualifies as strongly as Russell now. Hope to see him improve going forward)
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10
Charles Leclerc - 7/10 (I think the two were pretty even on pace, which is why the switch didn't work. After that Leclerc was in a no-win position with Max's undercut).

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10
Max Verstappen - 9/10 (Maximized his position and raced smart against Vettel).

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10
Nico Hülkenberg - X/10

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team: Car just doesn't seem that good.
Romain Grosjean - 7/10
Kevin Magnussen - 6/10

McLaren F1 Team: Compromised by the Russians. We know the feeling.
Lando Norris - X/10
Carlos Sainz Jr. - X/10

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 8/10
Lance Stroll - 5/10

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 9/10 (Can't give him a 10 since he was only in a position for that drive by destroying the car in practice).
Daniil Kvyat - 5/10 (I disagree with Chrill, the penalty was correct).

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 7/10
Robert Kubica - 7/10 (TV said he had a problem on a stop. Wasn't actually far behind Russell and was very close in qualifying).

China:

Merc:
Hammy - 8 - Is he going to be bested by Bottas in 2019... no chance.
Val - 7 - Good drive for a no. 2.

Ferrari:
Seb - 7 - We need more from Ferrari.  Just a couple of tenths/lap would do nicely.
'It is I' - 7 -  Odd timing from Ferrari for his stops, but likely made no difference to his final position.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 6 - Well, it was better than Bahrain, but he's still so far off this next chap.
Max - 8 - Another strong effort.  No mistakes.

Renault:
The Pie Man - 7 - Okay.  Much more competitive with Hulk this weekend.
Hulk - X - Picked him as weekly on the thinking that his new Renault bits wouldn't die....

Haas:
Big Jean - 6 - Cars are piss poor in race trim these days.  At least he beat this guy.
Son of Magnus - 5 - Fast(ish) Saturday, slow Sunday.  Don't know why.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - X - You know when you've been Kvyat'd.
Rally Guy's Son - 7 - Good race pace.  Close to KMag by end despite dropping 50 seconds behind after lap 1.

Racing Point:
Perez - 8 - Car seems middling, he did well with it.
The Stroller - 5 - Mediocre.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 8 - This chap's not that bad.
Adam Ant - 4 - This chap's not that good (at least at the moment).  Finished behind Sainz!

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 9 - Impressive drive from the pits.
The Torpedo - 3 - When entering a corner on cold tyres with a line of cars on your outside, do you a) ease back so you can run through two abreast, or b) keep your foot in whilst taking a nice, wide line and just wait for the inevitable carnage to unfold as you lose control of your car?  For Kvyat, the answer is always 'b'.

Williams: (Hopefully they can close this gap to the other teams)
Jack - 6 - Circulated without much fanfare or incident.
One-Armed Bandit - 6 - Likewise.

Thanks, guys!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-Rxe6H3eT-KVxM4PhgIm6tqr3KmT7clMTWRI7jdBsec/edit#gid=688805631

Highlights?

Biggest climb: Sergio Perez, +5 (16 -> 11)
Biggest drop: Daniil Kvyat, -6 (5 -> 11)

Sebastian Vettel is 17th so far, Leclerc 3rd. Verstappen has now claimed the number 1 spot solo, after sharing it with Bottas and Leclerc after Bahrain. The biggest gap between team mates is 3.4 for Kimi over Giovinazzi (Kimi 7.8 vs Giovinazzi 4.4). The smallest gap between team mates is 0.133 for Grosjean over Magnussen (Grosjean 6.333 vs Magnussen 6.2).

Let us do the Azerzerbaiajdsjdsan Grand Prix:

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 (Great start, but did not manage to beat Bottas. Kept him honest through the race but honestly Bottas was just stronger)
Valtteri Bottas - 9/10 (Since Bottas was stronger, he also gets a higher rating. Impressive stuff at the start to keep Hamilton behind, and then did what he had to do when Hamilton came knocking at the end)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 8/10 (Salvaged what he could and finished quite close to the two Silver Arrows)
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 (Considering where he started, through all fault of his own, this was a good race. I would have hoped for him to beat Verstappen but it wasn't to be. Perhaps switching to hards, and doing so earlier, would have been a better strategy)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 (Good stuff, Pierre! Well, until you retired anyway. Pit lane to P5, and not a horribly long way behind Verstappen)
Max Verstappen - 7/10 (Should have been able to challenge Vettel, but also kept Leclerc way behind.)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 3/10 (Well that was clumsy)
Nico Hülkenberg - 4/10 (Well that was slow)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 5/10 (Car failed on him in the end, maybe that was for the best)
Kevin Magnussen - 6/10 (They just didn't have the pace)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 7/10 (Could not challenge Sainz here, but keeps scoring good points for McLaren)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 (Could not beat Perez here, but kept Norris behind in a fine manner)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 9/10 (The king of Baku does it again. Best of the rest, but when five of the top six guys finish then P6 is what he gets)
Lance Stroll - 8/10 (He's not a very good qualifier, but hey Stroll has not been awful for the pointy racing so far)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 9/10 (Pit lane? To points? Sure, Gasly could in a Red Bull. The Räka (Swedish for prawn) could in an Alfa Romeo. Neato, iceman!)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 (He has got to start doing better. Sure, he started last but at least he was on the grid unlike the Finn)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 6/10 (I never quite understood what happened. Ran in the points, then pitted and was last. His team mate pitted and ran P10 after the pit stops. What went wrong? I never did see)
Daniil Kvyat - 7/10 (The unlucky victim of an Aussie not using his rear view mirrors. Ran solidly in the points before then)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 8/10 (Keeps beating Kubica in the races, and that is all we can ask for. Ran high up at the start before fading courtesy of a useless F1 car. Nice comeback from his awful luck at the start of the weekend)
Robert Kubica - 6/10 (Is it the car? Is it him? In races, he lacks something. I hope there will be an improvement for the better)

Driver of the race? Perez, I think, but it's not an easy one to call.

Ba Coup:

Merc:
Hammy - 8 - Is he going to be bested by Bottas in 2019... he was in this race.
Val - 9 - Tremendous drive for a no. 2.

Ferrari:
Seb - 8 - We need more from Ferrari.  Just a couple of tenths/lap would do nicely.
'It is I' - 7 -  Better to stick him on hards when he had a 12-second lead rather than watch his rivals pass him and ease into the distance.  Point off for qualifying crash.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 8 - Tough for the car to die after such a sterling effort.
Max - 8 - Decent enough

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 0 - Wow.  Forgot that all cars don't stop like the Red Bulls, then forgot to check his mirrors before reversing.
Hulk - 4 - That car was slow, and he struggled relative to Ricky Hairdo.  At least he didn't reverse into anybody.

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - Cars are piss poor in race trim these days, but at Baku it was also slow in qualifying.
Son of Magnus - 6 - Slow(ish) Saturday, even slower Sunday.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 8 - Nice/amazing to see both McLarens finish, and both in the points to boot.
Rally Guy's Son - 8 - Finally, a race without incident.

Racing Point:
Perez - 8 - Car improving, he did well with it.
The Stroller - 7 - He did slightly less well with it.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 8 - This chap's not that bad.  Can thank Ricky Hairdo for his top ten position.
Adam Ant - 6 - This chap wasn't too bad, but also not that good.

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 6 - Lost track of him as the highlights jumped from one lap to another.
The Torpedo - 7 - Kvyat blameless in a crash.  That's something I didn't expect to be saying.

Williams: (Hopefully they can close this gap to the other teams)
Jack - 7 - Reasonable in a less than reasonable car.
One-Armed Bandit - 5 - Crashed in qualifying and seemed slower than Russell in the race (didn't really see them in the Channel 4 coverage).

Thank you. That gives us the following results.

Change at the top:
Bottas moves from P2 to P1, overtaking Verstappen who slips to second.
Biggest climb:
Carlos Sainz, 17 -> 11 (+6)
Biggest fall:
Daniel Ricciardo, 19 -> 9 (-10)

Kimi sits 3rd now, Giovinazzi 20th. Easily the biggest gap to a team mate? Well, the biggest but not easily. Verstappen, 2nd, is a solid 16 places ahead of Gasly in 18th.

As per usual, all the stats are here. (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-Rxe6H3eT-KVxM4PhgIm6tqr3KmT7clMTWRI7jdBsec/edit?usp=sharing)

I've also added a sexy little feature comparing their score to their final average of 2018. That way we can see if drivers are performing better or worse than last season. Check it out.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on May 02, 2019, 04:00:04 AM
That is a sexy little feature.  I see that only two guys give a green block for me on the 'driver comparison' page: Chuck Norris and Carly Sainz.  What a co-incidence that they both happen to drive for McLaren....
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on May 02, 2019, 07:38:02 AM
Oh yes, but that's an old feature. The reds and greens under our own names highlight the highest and lowest rating across us 4 for this season. Column H, "CURRENT COMPARED TO 2018", is the one I was referring to!

Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10

Scuderia Ferrari: Given that both drivers seem to always have the exact same pace, they seem to be getting everything from the car.
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10
Charles Leclerc - 7/10

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10
Max Verstappen - 9/10

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 6/10
Nico Hülkenberg - 6/10

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 8/10
Kevin Magnussen - 8/10 (Finished ahead of Grosjean, but under dubious circumstances)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 3/10
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 6/10
Lance Stroll - 3/10

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 6/10 (Drove off the track and still beat his teammate)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 4/10

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda: Bad safety car execution cost both drivers multiple spots.
Alexander Albon - 7/10
Daniil Kvyat - 8/10

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 7/10
Robert Kubica - 6/10 (Race pace actually wasn't bad, then seemed to lose a ton of time around the pit stop).

Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on May 15, 2019, 01:33:50 AM
... and I'm always this slow.  Or slower.

Barcelona:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Clean start and then controlled from the front.  Able to ease away from Bottas.
Val - 8 - Clutch issue cost him off the grid, couldn't challenge Lewis after that.

Ferrari:
Seb - 7 - We need more from Ferrari.  Several tenths/lap quicker would do nicely.
'It is I' - 7 -  That was all the car had.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 7 - Couldn't beat either Ferrari on either day.
Max - 9 - Beat one Ferrari on Saturday and both of them on Sunday.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 7 - Car ain't much to write home about, but at least he kept it clean.
Hulk - 6 - Scratched it up in qualifying, all that gravel must've ruined the paintwork.

Haas:
Big Jean - 7 - Great, all Haas needs is for every race to be at Barcelona.
Son of Magnus - 8 - Tough defending against Grosjean, but only the same treatment he'd give to any other driver.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 4 - Optimistic move on Stroll.
Rally Guy's Son - 7 - Not his best Saturday and on Sunday gained from Toro Rosso's pit woes, but points is points.

Racing Point:
Perez - 6 - Drove around.  That was about it.  Car clearly needs more aero development.
The Stroller - 4 - Slower than Perez, just for a change.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 6 - Another car struggling on an aero track.
Adam Ant - 4 - So much slower than Kimi in Q1, and then in the race.

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 7 - Shambolic scenes during safety car pit-stops, cost both drivers several positions.
The Torpedo - 8 - They both raced well, car was strong, team was pants.  Valuable points wasted.

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 7 - Much the quicker driver on Saturday afternoon, faster also on Sunday.
One-Armed Bandit - 5 - I know the car is a dog, but he's also not putting in the performances I'd hoped to see.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on May 15, 2019, 05:54:37 AM
OK then.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 (Nothing wrong all race. Only lacking in qualifying, but made it up for sure. Lovely stuff)
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 (Not much to do once he lost the start, but dropped back worryingly far at times)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 8/10 (Silly flat spot at the start, and did well to recover to P4 when the Ferrari really did not offer much more than that)
Charles Leclerc - 7/10 (Was not at all benefitted by the late Safety Car which completely removed any 1-stop advantage. P5 was the maximum then, was it not?)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 6/10 (When your team mate is on the podium, starting 6th and finishing 6th is not good enough)
Max Verstappen - 9/10 (This, however, is good enough)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (I think this is all Renault could hope for here. Battled nicely though)
Nico Hülkenberg - 6/10 (Like Daniel, just behind him)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 7/10 (Could not keep it together after the Magnus pushed him very wide. Lucky to escape with P10)
Kevin Magnussen - 8/10 (Roughed his team mate up a little, but that is also why he ended up best of the rest)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 6/10 (Rather optimistic dive on Stroll, but it would have worked against a more solid rival. Stroll definitely let the crash happen, and Lando is at fault for letting Stroll make that decision)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 (Kept it clean, although could not take it to the Haases)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 5/10 (Has maximised the SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team Force India car so far this year, but it was not repeated here. Meh is the best grade he will get)
Lance Stroll - 4/10 (Silly to be that aggressive with Lando, but I agree with the stewards not handing out a penalty to either driver)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 5/10 (Not a strong race, including failing to use the track at the start)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 3/10 (Still lost to Kimi though. How? He is not having a good start to 2019. Not at all. Only beat the Williams cars. That. was. all. he. could)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 6/10 (Not bad, not bad at all. Still, 0 points in a race where the car was good enough for it even though it was not really his fault. Failed to eat the Grogro when lots of others succeeded)
Daniil Kvyat - 8/10 (Really quite a solid race, but definitely hurt by the Toro Rosso Pitto Stoppo)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 6/10 (Hmm)
Robert Kubica - 5/10 (Meh)
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

And with that, stats.

Biggest climb: Kevin Magnussen (16 -> 12, +4)
Biggest drop: Lancer Stroll (12 -> 18, -6)

Max retakes the top spot from Bottas, and Hamilton is looking at joining them. He's climbed from 6th to 3rd after Barcelona. We are all close in our opinion of Hamilton's season, his lowest rating is 7.8 and his highest is 8.0.

Daniel Ricciardo is the one who is doing the worst compared to his 2018 total, he's -1.545 compared to 2018. In comparison, Max is +2.325 so far this year. Mister consistency is Carlos Sainz, who is rated 0.055 better than in 2018.

Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 10/10 (Well I just don't know what he could ever have done better. Those tyres did not last, and the impressive thing isn't keeping Verstappen behind but keeping himself on track at all)
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 (Got knocked by Verstappen in the pits, had to re-pit, and obviously could finish no higher than 4th after that)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 (Well, starting P4 and finishing P2 is what it is all about. You can't win Monaco from 4th really)
Charles Leclerc - 5/10 (Had to overtake. Did. Too harshly. Crashed. Almost spun. Ruined his tyres. Then his car. Messy desperate drive)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 (Strong to get ahead of the midfield considering where he started. Did what Leclerc should have done)
Max Verstappen - 7/10 (Messy race, but I guess Verstappen + Monaco cannot get cleaner than this)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 (Took the start from K-Mag but could not hold on, still scored himself some points. Ricciardo likes Monaco, and Monaco likes him back)
Nico Hülkenberg - 5/10 (Was he in the race? Oh yeah, Leclerc tried to overtake him once. Other than that? Unsure)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 7/10 (He was really chasing Danny for that 9th place, but still scored points on a track that would not have suited the Haas car at all just one month ago)
Kevin Magnussen - 6/10 (Deserved penalty for not yielding to Perez, but what was he even doing down there? I did not see the whole race, but I mean he started P5 so should have finished there or thereabouts) EDIT: OK, he got punished by an erroneous pit call during SC. Poor Haas. Adapting his score accordingly.

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 6/10 (Carlos is P6. Norris should score points then)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 9/10 (Norris was P11. Sainz scored lots of points. Good)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 7/10 (Was on course for a decent result, but got hurt in that there KMag incident. Also, what the hell was up with his pit exit? Those marshals, that video is SCARY)
Lance Stroll - 5/10 (Meh. He just does not like Monaco, and it does not fancy him either. Poor)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 4/10 (300th GP? Well, not one of his 290 best)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 2/10 (Even when Kimi finishes P17, he beats his team mate by a lot. Giovinazzi, this is getting painful. You are lucky there are no reasonable 3rd drivers to bring in, or we would be calling for that by now)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 8/10 (First time in an F1 around Monaco? No problem! P8, a second behind his more experienced torpedo friend)
Daniil Kvyat - 8/10 (Like Albon, but ahead and also not a rookie. So not really like Albon then)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 8/10 (Despite being spun a little bit, he finished well ahead of Kubica. Strong season for this rookie here, despite that car there being poor)
Robert Kubica - 5/10 (Well, at least his arm got around the Loews hairpin. That's about as good as this gets. It is time Kubica starts shining, or this return to F1 will be remembered as quite a poor one-season comeback)
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Matt on May 31, 2019, 08:40:07 PM
Kubica got spun, not Russell. Kubica was in 15th until Giovinazzi took him out. Granted, if you were watching the Sky broadcast, you might not have realized that since they misidentified it as Russell at least five times.

Well, I fell asleep for a bit after that, so maybe Russell got spun too. But I don't think so.

Much more of this and it will be time for Sauber to get on the blower to Eric and find out how watertight is his lad's IndyCar contract.

My scores will appear at some point.  Frankly, apart from Hammy's sterling effort up front, most of them were just sat stuck behind the guy ahead, hoping not to have their race compromised by a dodgy strategy call when the safety car showed up.  Expect many sixes and sevens from me.

Monaco - Scores but few words....

Merc:
Hammy - 8 - Did well enough on tired tyres, but it was hardly Mansell/Senna in '92.
Val - 7 - Second if not for Max in the pits.

Ferrari:
Seb - 7 - Drove around.
'It is I' - 5 - Too aggressive but entertaining to watch.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 7
Max - 7

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 7
Hulk - 5

Haas:
Big Jean - 7
Son of Magnus - 6

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 6
Rally Guy's Son - 7

Racing Point:
Perez - 6
The Stroller - 4 - Slower than Perez, just for a change.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 6 - One of the teams that elected not to pit under safety car.  Don't know why.
Adam Ant - 3 - Another classic performance.

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 7
The Torpedo - 7

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 7
One-Armed Bandit - 6

Alright. Kanada. Möntrëäl. (no thats not how we spell it in Swedish)

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 7/10 (Failed to secure pole, and made multiple mistakes chasing Vettel mainly into the turn 10 chicane. Erratic victory if anything)
Valtteri Bottas - 4/10 (Invisible. Barely managed to pass a Renault. Poor)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 (Would have been 10/10 except for that one costly mistake. Other than that he kept a faster car behind all race long)
Charles Leclerc - 7/10 (In the end he was mere seconds away from stealing P2 from Vettel. Ran mostly alone all race long, never challenging the top two and never challenged from behind)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 3/10 (You know, starting P5 and with a Renault ahead of him he should really have finished fourth. He finished eighth. Wow)
Max Verstappen - 8/10 (You know, missing Q3 and with Bottas and Gasly ahead of him he should really have finished sixth. He finished fifth. Cool beans, bro)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 9/10 (Qualified faster than Gasly and Bottas (and Verstappen), finished ahead of Gasly after battling with the top guys for a while. Hot diggity)
Nico Hülkenberg - 8/10 (Like Daniel but lower starting position. Good race, very good)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 5/10 (I guess the car is to blame? Nonetheless, this was poor by any way of measuring it)
Kevin Magnussen - 1/10 (He crashed his own car. His mechanics built a new one from a spare chassis overnight. He then moaned like a little shit all race about how poor the car was. Unsportsmanlike behaviour. Gunther Steiner told him to shut up over the radio mid-race, and that was brilliant. All praise Gunther)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - X/10 (I mean.. Did he MELT the car? Huh)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 7/10 (Had to pit after 4 laps due to something blocking a brake duct. Did well to run in the points at all, but that insane stint on hards finally dragged him away from points)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 5/10 (Did not have what it took to find the points in Canada)
Lance Stroll - 8/10 (Wow. I mean, he pretty much started last didn't he? And with little running in practice due to an engine failure he still held it together to score two points for Force Racing Poindia. Great home race, kid)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 4/10 (You know, this was poor by whatever measurement you use)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 (A fair bit better than Kimi in Canada, but still the Alfauber seems to be lacking just like the Haas)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - X/10 (Front wing taken off at the start, never managed to catch up)
Daniil Kvyat - 7/10 (Salvaged a point at a track where the Honda did not really look as competitive as even the Renault)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 7/10 (Solidly outperforming Kubica, this trend is looking rather permanent)
Robert Kubica - 4/10 (Very dead last, one lap down on K-Mag and Russell even. This is sad to see, Kubica with one arm cannot match Kubica with two arms)

Post by: Penfold on June 10, 2019, 11:59:52 PM
The Merc was the faster car over the whole lap, but the Ferrari was too quick in a straight line for Hammy to get close even with DRS.

Scores at some point.

Agreed, but all it takes is one poor passage through that hairpin from Vettel. That never happened. Hamilton locked up there 4-5 times. Still, I very fairly deducted a point for his blatant miss that led to the 5-second penalty. Support or dislike the penalty, Vettel did make a silly mistake.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on June 14, 2019, 05:44:01 AM
I think Vettel would've needed to completely fluff the exit from the hairpin to give Hamilton even a look at making a move.

Anyway, this is the first day in what seems like an age that I haven't been coughing incessantly, so I shall take this opportunity to commit pen (fingers) to paper (keyboard) and baffle/amuse you with my scores for Canada (the race, not the place):

Merc:
Hammy - 8 - Had the quickest car in race trim but never going to drive past the Ferrari.  Harried Seb into yet another mistake.
Val - 4 - Wow.  I mean he barely deserves four points with that effort.

Ferrari:
Seb - 8 - Point off for his little slither across the grass, otherwise an extremely good performance.
'It is I' - 7 - Could've pushed harder to secure second place but Ferrari 'forgot' to tell him about Vettel's five-second penalty - such acts remind me why I despise this team.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 3 - I'm with Chrill on this one...
Max - 8 - ... and also on this one.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 9 - Great race for Renault and a top notch drive from Ricky.
Hulk - 8 - Couldn't match the Hairdo's Saturday pace, but was with him for the Sunday outing.

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - Yet another awful track for Haas.  At least Paul Ricard has lots of corners.
Son of Magnus - 2 - Knob.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - X - Beat Carlos in qualifying, was running well in the race, but apparently isn't able to drive without both rear wheels.
Rally Guy's Son - 7 - Screwed by early pit-stop.

Racing Point:
Perez - 6 - Seemed to be stuck behind Grosjean for most of the race.
The Stroller - 8 - Strategy worked well for him but he also made it work.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 3 - I have to mark him down extra hard just for finishing behind Ant.
Adam Ant - 5 - He beat Kimi.  Must be the highlight of his season thus far.

Toro Rosso:
Blur - X - Seems fair.  Front wing removed by Adam Ant at turn one, race effectively over.
The Torpedo - 7 - At least he got a point.

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 7 - Well ahead of Robert.
One-Armed Bandit - 3 - Painfully slow.

Must summon enthusiasm to do the Frenchie GP scores; problem is this will entail thinking about the race!

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Pole & no mistakes on Sunday but victory came too easily to get a 10.  Lack of fighting amongst the top six will cap how high their points go.
Val - 6 - Too generous?  At least he was only 18 seconds behind the guy in an identical car....

Ferrari:
Seb - 6 - Screwed it on Saturday, couldn't catch Max on Sunday.
'It is I' - 8 - Great qualifying and ran Bottas close towards the end of the race.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 4 - He came tenth in a Red Bull so perhaps this is overly kind, but as soon as he needed to run softs to reach Q3 his race was doomed - doomed I tell ya!
Max - 8 - Strong form continues.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 6 - One off for overtaking off the track.
Hulk - 6 - Needs to match Hairdo in qualifying, otherwise you end up stuck behind a Kimi Raikkonen for an entire race.

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - Car seems so poor at certain tracks that judging driver performance is almost impossible.
Son of Magnus - 5 - What he just said.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 7 - Plus one point for stoic defence with a broken car, minus one point for losing out to Carlos off the grid.
Rally Guy's Son - 7 - Did nothing wrong.  Said he drove well within his and the car's pace after Max sped ahead.

Racing Point:
Perez - 6
The Stroller - 6

Alfauber:
Kimi - 8
Adam Ant - 5 - Unlucky to reach Q3 and thus start race on softs.

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 5 - Strong qualifying, weak race.
The Torpedo - 6

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 6
One-Armed Bandit - 6

Rest are coming.... and they're done.

Alright. Paul Ricard, Le Castellet, France. None of my extensively boring comments for the ratings today, because it's been a while since the race.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10
Charles Leclerc - 8/10

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 2/10 (Only scored points since Ricciardo made a mess of it all)
Max Verstappen - 7/10

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10
Nico Hülkenberg - 6/10

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 6/10 (I'm sure they got the most...)
Kevin Magnussen - 6/10 (...out of a useless car)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 9/10 (Massively mature drive despite being basically a child)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 (Like above but having to struggle less with a broken car)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 7/10
Lance Stroll - 6/10

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 (Suffered from reaching Q3)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 5/10
Daniil Kvyat - 6/10

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 7/10
Robert Kubica - 8/10 (Actually defended valiantly against Russell, so wehey)
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

That's a pity as I do enjoy your "extensively boring comments"; but then with a race this extensively boring it's a credit to both of us for even bothering to score it.

Austria shaping up to be far, far more interesting.

I'll definitely provide comments for my reasoning when rating their Austrian performances.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on July 01, 2019, 12:47:10 AM
Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 4/10 (Well this was a refreshing change of pace. He had nothing on those around him, even losing out to a Vettel pitting one more time than him)
Valtteri Bottas - 6/10 (Like Hamilton but not losing out to that Vettel we mentioned before)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 6/10 (Could not make his hard tyres work, but switched to a two-stopper and regained that P4 he was in when pitting)
Charles Leclerc - 9/10 (Did everything right today, apart from keeping Verstappen behind when it mattered most. Mature drive)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 1/10 (You cannot, and I don't know how to stress this enough, you cannot be lapped by your own team mate)
Max Verstappen - 10/10 (Honda's first win as an engine supplier in F1 since I was a virgin. I deducted one point for the poor start, but he still gets 10/10 because, well, he overtook every single driver in the top two teams on course to winning. 6th win, but still has not secured a pole position ever)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 6/10 (The Renaults were off the pace, and even a decent strategy could not propel Ricciardo to the points)
Nico Hülkenberg - 4/10 (Like Daniel, but not the same strategy and not as strong a drive. So nothing like Daniel, then)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 5/10 (At least he was not Kevin Magnussen)
Kevin Magnussen - 1/10 (Ouch. Failed to park within his grid spot, failed to actually drive the car. Russell beat him, fair and square)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 9/10 (Well now. P3 after the start, obviously he could not fight those guys in the long run but he kept Gasly behind all race. Great stuff. Are you sure Lando Calrissian is in his debut F1 season?)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 9/10 (Made his strategy, same as Ricciardo's, work really well and moved from dead last on the grid to a P8 finish. Some sweet overtakes, which were not shown on TV since those pesky frontrunners battled all race long)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 7/10 (He was trying to reach that P10, but the Force Point SpScore car just does not have the speed right now. Here's hoping for their B-spec car)
Lance Stroll - 5/10 (Could not match Perez here, really)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 (He was looking very strong very long, but he faded ever so slightly towards the end)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 7/10 (Points!! Look at that, he scored points! OK, just the one point. Still, it counts)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 6/10 (A little bit better than the Russian, but still nowhere near the points)
Daniil Kvyat - 4/10 (What was I expecting? He was my third driver this week, so of course Toro Rosso would make a mess of this weekend)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 8/10 (Way ahead of his team mate, but also ahead of Magnussen. He's doing what he can with that Williams car)
Robert Kubica - 3/10 (He is not delivering. Oh man, it saddens me, but he just is not delivering. Sorry Robert, leave that seat to someone who deserves it more)

Driver of the race? Don't make me choose. I guess Verstappen.

Didn't notice you'd posted this.  Hang on a mo while I cast my eyes across your scores and commentary.  Excellent.

Austria (aka The Best Race of 2019):

Merc:
Hammy - 6 - Long stop for a broken wing but ended only a few seconds behind Bottas, but two places is two places.  Both drivers constrained by engine issues.
Val - 6 - In a race replete with memorable moments, Valerie's contribution was to let Max past with barely a whimper.

Ferrari:
Seb - 8 - Not bad from P9 on the grid.  One more lap and I reckon he would've been on the podium.
'It is I' - 9 - Pole and a lovely little drive complete with some stout defending, until Max could no longer be resisted.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 2 - Hmm, not great.  Looking for positives... well, he didn't crash.  That's something, right?
Max - 10 - Don't know whether the start was his fault or a software issue, either way he gets full marks.  Superb.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 6 - Finished where he started but only because the two Haas cars were so hopeless on Sunday.
Hulk - 6 - Finished two places higher than where he started thanks to the hapless Haas motors.

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - At least he finished ahead of someone besides Kubica.
Son of Magnus - 2 - The car was awful, I think Kevin was even worse - came in one full minute behind Romain.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 9 - Nailed qualifying and didn't put a foot wrong all race.  I know, it is hard to believe he's a rookie.
Rally Guy's Son - 10 - Back of the grid all the way to 8th and would've been battling with Gasly & Norris had a section of front wing not broken around lap 60.

Racing Point:
Perez - 7 - Able to get himself ahead of both Renaults but not quite reach the hallowed land (top ten).
The Stroller - 5 - Was not able to get himself ahead of either Renault.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 8 - Finished four positions ahead of Hulk.  Surely that deserves at least an eight?
Adam Ant - 7 - An actual decent performance.  Shocker.

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 5 - Ahead of teamy and both Haas drivers.
The Torpedo - 4 - Beaten by a Haas.

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 7 - Not easy to judge with this car but seemed a strong effort.
One-Armed Bandit - 2 - Oh boy.  More than a minute back from Georgie Porgie - this is just sad to see.

Thank you!

This far into the season, the tables are settling quite a bit. Therefore, the biggest climber is split between 3 drivers climbing two places each:

Norris: P8 -> P6
Räikkönen: P9 -> P7
Russell: P10 -> P8

They do so thanks to Kvyat (P7 -> P11) and Albon (P6 -> P9). It's all tight in the midfield. Ranked 7th, at 7.042, is Räikkönen. Ranked 11th, at 6.750, is Kvyat and Perez.

Desperately last is still Giovinazzi despite his points, a 4.708 on average sees him sit far behind Gasly on 5.333.

At the top, Verstappen leads Hamilton with 0.5 (8.292 versus 7.792).

All ratings here, as always. (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-Rxe6H3eT-KVxM4PhgIm6tqr3KmT7clMTWRI7jdBsec/edit?usp=sharing)

Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

Also, I built a new page called "Team Comparison". Only problem is, it does not work. I will need to find a different way to do it, because what it currently does is take the averages of the drivers from the Driver Page, and call that the Team score. Problem is, whenever a drivers position changes, the Team score won't follow and so it will suddenly rate the wrong drivers.

For example, Red Bull's score is calculated based on the score for the drivers in position 1 and 19, Verstappen and Gasly. Now, if someone else got ranked 19th then they would be the one rated for Red Bull.

The easiest fix is to create a new, fixed table, where all driver averages are also stored. Then the team page can call on those. I'll do it before the next race, I do have two weeks. For now, the numbers are accurate.

The Team Comparison page will tell us which driver pairing is doing the best, but more interestingly could reveal if we favour drivers from a certain team.

Hey, Gasly is doing his level best to catch down to Ant.  Give the man just a little more time.

I hadn't checked your tables for a while (sorry!), and whilst I fully expected to see Max at the top given how he's been driving, I must say the scale of his lead over Hammy came as a surprise.

Thumbs up for the Team Comparison feature.  No shock to see the Haas boys bringing up the rear....

Britannia!

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 (Well yikes. That last lap was fast, and those tyres were old. Lucked into the lead with a SC, but nobody had a chance to keep up after that)
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10 (Held the start, nicely done, but elected to run a second stint on mediums effectively locking him into a two-stopper. Did not work)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 4/10 (Some good driving, coupled with some really bad driving. Openly admitted he was at fault, and accepted his penalty. P16 is not really where Ferrari wants to finish)
Charles Leclerc - 9/10 (Some great duels with Gasly and Verstappen, and in the end that gave him a podium finish. Starting to settle himself in as the number one driver at Ferrari)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 (Now look at this guy. He beat Verstappen! Yes, slightly helped by the fact Verstappen flew through the air a bit and almost retired from the race, but still only seconds away from his first podium finish)
Max Verstappen - 9/10 (Great battles with Leclerc, great overtake on Vettel, then boom. Wow, Verstappen was the mature one on track. P5 was a lucky finish in the end, he should have had to retire)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (P7 on the grid, P7 at the finish, 7 points)
Nico Hülkenberg - 5/10 (P10 on the grid, P10 at the finish, not 10 points)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 1/10 (You do not crash into your team mate)
Kevin Magnussen - 1/10 (See above)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 7/10 (Got caught out during the SC and could not recover)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 9/10 (Did not get caught out during the SC, finished best of the rest. Good stuff)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 4/10 (Crashed, pitted, never caught up to Williams)
Lance Stroll - 7/10 (Like Perez except did not crash, was always ahead of Williams and... ok, nothing like Perez. Good racecraft as we've come to expect from Stroll)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 (Did what Sainz did, but not quite as well. Still, P8 isn't too bad!)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 4/10 (Back to form, Antonio. Outqualified Kimi but made himself look a bit foolish crashing out)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 6/10 (Rather poor race, caught out just like Norris and followed him home)
Daniil Kvyat - 8/10 (P17 to P9? Well now, this kind of drive would be just what Red Bull needs to move him up to the big team, assuming Gasly cannot match Verstappen. Which he did. Sorry, Danny)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 7/10 (It is...)
Robert Kubica - 6/10 (...what it is)

Scores... back later today to do them.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on July 19, 2019, 05:46:50 AM
Later today.

Silverstone:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Had the pace to beat Val even without safety car, but it obviously made things far easier.
Val - 8 - Don't know why Merc went for that second set of mediums, it only served to shut down his options.

Ferrari:
Seb - 5 - Was all going quite well until he encountered another car on track.  Doesn't handle such situations so well these days.
'It is I' - 9 - By contrast, this chap plays superbly with other.  In this instance with both Red Bulls.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 8 - Blimey.  Remembered how to drive.
Max - 9 - More great racing from this guy, and top marks to Red Bull for building a tank.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 8 - Great decision to pit him during safety car even though his tyres were just eight laps old.
Hulk - 5 - I thought a fairly mediocre comment would suffice for a fairly mediocre performance.  And there you have it.

Haas:
Big Jean - 0 - Enough ...
Son of Magnus - 0 - ... is enough.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 8 - Should've pitted him during safety car even though his tyres were just eight laps old.
Rally Guy's Son - 9 - Lucky with the safety car but superb defensive driving to hold back the Hairdo chap.

Racing Point:
Perez - 4 - Oops.
The Stroller - 7 - No oops.  Hopefully more to come from Team FRIP when upgrades arrive in Germany.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 8 - Once again finished ahead of Hulk.  Just thought I'd mention it....
Adam Ant - 3 - Could only be worse if he crashed into his teammate, but what sort of idiots would do that?

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 6 - Couldn't make a second stop because of some electrical issue with car, thus condemned to an overly long stint.
The Torpedo - 8 - Making a much better fist of F1 this time around.

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 7 - Solid.  Hope Germany updates cut this yawning deficit to the rest.
One-Armed Bandit - 6 - Close to Jack this time.  Real close.

Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Matt on July 28, 2019, 09:39:52 PM
Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 4/10 (Two offs and was running last on the road until the last SC. Threw away a win)
Valtteri Bottas - 3/10 (But at least Hamilton finished)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 (Yeah, last to 2nd, but he was pretty much stuck in the lower points until the very end, so not a 10)
Charles Leclerc - 2/10 (Complained about the run-off as if he didn't go wide three times on that corner. That's an extra point deduction)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 4/10
Max Verstappen - 10/10 (No mistakes, unlike almost everyone else on [or off, as the case may be] the track)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - X/10 (Wasn't running that great, but he retired so early it's impossible to say anything)
Nico Hülkenberg - 3/10 (Threw away a probable first podium)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 7/10
Kevin Magnussen - 7/10 (They only hit each other once!)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 6/10 (Mechanical failure, but wasn't great to begin with)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 1/10 (Crashed before anyone else could)
Lance Stroll - 9/10 (Held on to fourth in probably the third worst car)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10 (Ignoring the penalties here. Went off once and that probably cost him a spot or two)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 (Not as good as Kimi, but not as bad as normal)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 8/10
Daniil Kvyat - 9/10 (Deciding who should replace Gasly is a fairly tough call. Think the nod would go to Kvyat with Albon given a second season at STR)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 7/10
Robert Kubica - 8/10 (POINTS)

Max did have his little 360 degree spin shortly after Red Bull had bolted on a set of mediums, but I think he can be forgiven that one!

Only saw extended highlights (about 45 mins of action) so some bits chopped out - mostly it was the SC/VSC laps as I only noticed two in-race forward jumps in the lap counter - but did Hammy crash twice or was it the one crash and the one high-speed spin?
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on July 29, 2019, 02:47:50 AM
Yes, the high-speed spin. He did not touch the wall more than once, but he did go off the track big time twice.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on July 29, 2019, 03:35:33 AM
Cheers.  I didn't think they'd miss out a Hammy crash but wanted to check.  Now Sainz's off/spin was lost in one of the jumps forward and never shown or mentioned.  Race moved on several laps and Carlos was suddenly down behind Norris, only knew he'd had an incident when the 'pit-stops taken' graphic showed he'd still made just the one tyre change.

Germany. Anyone finishing without crashing into someone else or a barrier is likely to score at least 7, I'd think.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 3/10 (Off the track twice, one of which resulted in a crash. That cannot be anything higher than 3)
Valtteri Bottas - 5/10 (Running in P2 when crashing out. Costly, but made only the one mistake to Hamilton's 2)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 (Looked off the pace at times, but when the race really came alive he did nothing wrong and secured a magnificent P2)
Charles Leclerc - 5/10 (Got too hot when Hamilton was in the pits, and simply crashed. Was running well before that)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Pierre Gasly - 4/10 (Ah yes, it is the Gasly we all know. Poor getaway, poor race, and finally crashes into a Toro Rosso to give himself that all-important DNF)
Max Verstappen - 10/10 (Deducting one for spinning off the track, but then again everything else was magnificent so he's reduced from 11 to 10)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 6/10 (Did nothing remarkable but did stay out of trouble. Then the car said "no")
Nico Hülkenberg - 7/10 (Did something remarkable, a podium was on the cards. Then the driver said "no")

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 7/10 (Haas, why do you...)
Kevin Magnussen - 6/10 (...always come together?)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 6/10 (Was running OK before his car looked at Daniel Ricciardo and said "yes")
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 9/10 (He was only one second from a podium finish in the end. That is stunning)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - X/10 (Well, he did make this race come alive so thank you for that)
Lance Stroll - 9/10 (He actually had a really poor race before that one decision which elevated him to the front of the pack. Clever decision, and he made the slicks work before anyone else. Great drive, Lance!)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10 (Sadly he fell away after a great start (Oh yes, the traction control simulation with the clutch...) and in the end it wasn't his race. He even spun a bit!)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 (Like Kimi but behind him)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Alexander Albon - 8/10 (Kept his cool, had to try an overtake on Lewis which compromised him, but still scored a career best P6)
Daniil Kvyat - 10/10 (Oh mama. Oh dada I should say, for his wife gave birth to their daughter less than 24 hours before the race. And then he raced like this. He simply made a pass for P3 and finished on the podium. In a Toro Rosso. Hot stuff)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 8/10 (On a day where everyone crashed, he didn't. That's about as good as they come for Williams in 2019)
Robert Kubica - 9/10 (Like Russell, but ahead of him and INTO THE POINTS!)

Here goes nothing.

Germany:

Merc:
Hammy - 4 - Illness & the team taking a minute to find him a set of inters didn't help his cause, but the crash was even less helpful.
Val - 3 - Only the one mistake but also seemed pretty sluggish all race.

Ferrari:
Seb - 8 - A steady but unspectacular drive, buoyed by safety cars galore and rivals throwing themselves off the track.
'It is I' - 3 - Not steady, definitely not spectacular.  Multiple errors at the same corner.

Red Bull:
Greasy Peril - 4 - Damn, once again forgot how to drive.  To be fair (ish), the Albon crash was poor luck - rest of the race was just poor.
Max - 10 - I'm beginning to think this kid may have a future in the sport....

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - X - Out too early to rate.
Hulk - 5 - Out too early to get a high rating.  Ran impressively until he ran into a wall.

Haas:
Big Jean - 7 - Just for getting to the end in these conditions.  Added bonus that he and Magnus only had the one light piece of contact.
Son of Magnus - 7 - Made it to the end, only a little nibble with Romain.  Amazing that teammates not smashing into each other is a noteworthy event.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 5 - Car died early but he didn't look too special up to then.
Rally Guy's Son - 8 - Off-road adventure cost him a chunk of time, possibly a podium, and a one point deduction from me.

Racing Point:
Perez - 3 - Oops.  Again.
The Stroller - 8 - No oops.  Nothing remarkable apart from the team getting him into the pits early for that crucial last tyre change.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 7 - Made it to the end and got zero reward.  Bet he wishes he hadn't bothered.
Adam Ant - 6 - Passable impression of an F1 driver.

Toro Rosso:
Blur - 8 - Better drive than Kvyat, but timing of final pit-stop and that Lewis overtake attempt proved costly.
The Torpedo - 8 - Much like Stroll, not a magnificent drive but team pulled him into pits at the right time.

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 7 - Late mistake knocked him behind Kubica.  Could've been pitted on same lap as Stroll if team had listened to his advice.
One-Armed Bandit - 8 - What a time to finish ahead of Russell.  Eight years since he last scored in F1 - a new record for time between points.

Leaves Giovinazzi with five points.  Poor bloke, probably his least-bad drive of the season.

Edit: Forgot about his decent effort in Austria.

Oh I will have to update the lovely document now, to reflect the change at Red Bull. Grr.

Spa, then. Belgium.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 (He did what he could, made few mistakes apart from the rare lockup, but didn't have enough laps to catch Leclerc)
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 (Like Hamilton but slower)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 6/10 (Ate his tyres, and was forced to run a two-stopper in order to even finish. Ended up helping Ferrari in a very Barrichello-esque manner)
Charles Leclerc - 9/10 (Led from start to finish, except for the pits. It got a bit scary at the end with all the lapped cars bringing Hamilton into contention, but Leclerc delivered under pressure. Well done)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Alexander Albon - 8/10 (That's not bad at your debut, is it? He brought it home in P5, would have been P6 had it not been for Norris. 8/10 courtesy of being meant to finish behind one midfield runner)
Max Verstappen - X/10 (I haven't yet decided whether I blame Max for the start crash or not, so I may come back and give him a low score) 3/10

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 (Fought valiantly with a severely damaged car, and ran a ridiculous stint)
Nico Hülkenberg - 7/10 (Solid midfield run)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 5/10 (He looked the stronger Haas for most of the race, so I don't know what he is doing down behind Magnussen at the end of this)
Kevin Magnussen - 5/10 (Like Grosjean, but slower, but still ahead. So eh, I'll score them similarly)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 10/10 (Pretty much a perfect race. P11 -> P5 at the start, benefitting cleverly from the mayhem in front of him. Then, he just ran on his own all race before retiring on Lap 44 of 44. That is awful)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - X/10 (He didn't run for very long, did he now)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 8/10 (A new 3-year deal confirmed, and one can see why. Very solid driver, there to pick up the pieces when others faltered)
Lance Stroll - 6/10 (Not as strong, but he did bag a point so there's that)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 5/10 (It just wasn't in him here. Maybe his left leg limited him more than Alfauber expected, or maybe it was all due to damage from Verstappen? We don't know, but the fact is he only just beat the Williams of Robert Kubica and finished behind Russell)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 7/10 (Looked brilliant all race, some LOVELY overtakes, and then... yeah... He did what he would do, cracked under pressure and finished dead last. Deducting 2 for that end crash)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 (That wasn't too bad, was it? He did not beat his team mate, but he brought it home nicely to extend his points lead in what is now the midfield. Formula 1.5, if you will)
Daniil Kvyat - 8/10 (Really solid drive, battled with Albon for a while and kept it clean just like they did in Hungaroring. Impressive)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 8/10 (Not horribly far behind the rest!)
Robert Kubica - 7/10 (Not horribly far behind the rest, but still behind Russell)

Alright, I feel like the document is fixed now. I've simply added a new row to the "grid", so all the Red Bull and Toro Rosso drivers will now be entered on a different row. I've also updated the Driver Comparison and Compiled Ratings pages to reflect this, so that for example Alexander Albon's total reflects his ratings both for Toro Rosso and for Red Bull.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10 (Did fine. Seemed to follow what the team's strategy was by undercutting everyone, but then the tires were gone. Still managed to hold up Hamilton by several seconds)
Charles Leclerc - 9/10

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Alexander Albon - 8/10
Max Verstappen - 1/10

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10
Nico Hülkenberg - 7/10

Spa:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Ran well all race, surely extracted as much from his car as did Leclerc from the Ferrari.
Val - 7 - Couldn't extract as much from his Merc.

Ferrari:
Seb - 7 - Heavy on the tyres; really should've had both Ferraris on the podium.
'It is I' - 9 - Thrilled this guy got his maiden victory.  Excellent qualifying lap and then a good, clean run on Sunday.

Red Bull:
Blur - 7 - Decent first outing in the Red Bull.  Would've scored higher but he would've ended behind Norris and was barely ahead of Perez & Kvyat.
Max - 2 - Shooting yourself down the inside at La Source on lap one is an almost guaranteed crash.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 8 - A damaged car and tyres that couldn't quite make it.
Hulk - 7 - Reasonable outing but nothing more.

Haas:
Big Jean - 6 - Vagaries of the car make it tricky to score the Haas duo.  Like Chrill, not entirely sure why Romain ended behind KMag.
Son of Magnus - 6 - Slower of the pair but somehow finished higher.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 9 - So this is how Renault plans to beat their customer team - unexplained engine failures.
Rally Guy's Son - X - The Renault boys got him early....

Racing Point:
Perez - 9 - Couldn't ask for much more.
The Stroller - 7 - Not miles behind Perez.

Alfauber:
Kimi - X - Too much damage to really judge his efforts.
Adam Ant - 4 - It was going great, or at least pretty damn good, but then he threw it all away.

Toro Rosso:
Greasy Peril - 7 - Okay.  Not too far off Daniil but will need to be closer to him (and sometimes ahead) before the season ends.
The Torpedo - 9 - I think that was as solid as Perez's effort, ended only a few seconds behind the Racing Point.

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 7 - Another team I have difficulty in scoring.  Seemed a solid effort.
One-Armed Bandit - 6 - Slightly less solid.

Alright, thank you all for that.

With the changing of the Bulls, I also took the opportunity to hide M4A1Carbine from the Google Document. We now know that Matt rates the drivers highest in 10 cases, I do so in 8 cases, and Penfold only in 2.

I seem more willing to rate in extremes, Matt seems more willing to go the middle road. This is highlighted by Matt rating the bottom drivers higher than we do, but not keeping up with the top drivers.

Max Verstappen is rated 8.273 by me, 8.000 by Penfold, 7.714 by Matt.
Kevin Magnussen is rated 4.750 by me, 4.917 by Penfold, 6.429 by Matt. (He is also the driver with the most uneven rating)
The driver with the most even rating is Sebastian Vettel. He is rated 6.833 by me, 6.750 by Penfold, 6.857 by Matt.
The lowest score any driver has is a 4.583 for Giovinazzi, according to Penfold.
The highest score any driver has is a 8.273 for Verstappen, according to me.

In terms of the standings, we only have one change really Kimi moves from P5 to P9 courtesy of some strong drives from others. Norris (P6->P5), Kvyat (P8->P6), Russell (remains in P7) and Albon (P9->P8) overtake the Finn.

All the stats are here, as they usually are:

Hey!

I also managed to reinstate the Team Comparison page, finally now working. It was a hassle. Just look at this snippet which calculates the average rating of all Red Bull drivers:

=IFERROR(AVERAGE(Chrill!C7:W7,Penfold!C7:W7,M4A1Carbine!C7:W7,Matt!C7:W7,Chrill!C8:W8,Penfold!C8:W8,M4A1Carbine!C8:W8,Matt!C8:W8,Chrill!C9:W9,Penfold!C9:W9,M4A1Carbine!C9:W9,Matt!C9:W9,Chrill!C10:W10,Penfold!C10:W10,M4A1Carbine!C10:W10,Matt!C10:W10),"N/A")

That gives us the average of every single driver for every single one of us, explaining why there are 4 Chrill and 4 Penfold and so on.

All in all, the best driver pairing so far this year is McLaren on 7.460 (Sainz 7.625, Norris 7.308). The worst driver pairing, no surprise, is Haas on 5.441 (Grosjean 5.714, Magnussen 5.194).

I am working on updating our individual team ratings, so I'll return with those soon.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

Nice one.  The 'Team Comparison' page numbers are updating before my eyes.  Anyway, cheers for the spreadsheets and for pulling out some of the interesting stats on how we three have scored various drivers.

I've got to say I did not expect to be the one giving Hulk his best rating, that came as a mildly unpleasant revelation.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on September 03, 2019, 07:10:25 AM
The Team Comparisons page is now completed.

I am delighted to say, we do indeed rate teams differently. The biggest difference is with Haas. 5.057 for me, 5.186 for Penfold, 6.631 for Matt. That's a discrepancy of 1.574.

The smallest difference is for Toro Rosso, just 0.140 separates us (7.458 for Matt, 7.318 for me). Matt and I each rate 5 teams higher than anyone else, Penfold 0.

The teams table, in all its glory, can be viewed here:

Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

I rate the Haas drivers higher because I don't think the drivers can do anything. We know neither of them are this bad.

I haven't done all the races, so the 1 I gave Max this week probably hurt. I think he has been the best or second best driver this year.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on September 03, 2019, 07:43:27 AM
A chunk of the Haas discrepancy is due to that block of five races from Monaco to Britain that you didn't rate.  KMag had some terrible outings at that time which I rewarded with the following scores: 6/2/5/2/0; whilst Chrill gave him: 6/1/6/1/1.  Grosjean was mostly middling during that period, but for Silverstone he did get a zero from me and just one point from Chrill.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on September 03, 2019, 08:22:15 AM
Indeed, those were some low scores.

I did rate K-Mag 8 (in Australia), and Penfold did so for K-Mag in both Australia and Spain. None of the Haases have scored a 9 or 10 this year.

Also, I decided to rate Max at 3. 3 rather than 1 or 2 due to the fact I do not fully blame him for the crash. He divebombed a fair bit, yes, but Kimi was naïve to go for the apex from that far out.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on September 10, 2019, 07:16:07 AM
This is something like the fourth time I try to start writing ratings for Monza.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 7/10 (Had the pace to win, for sure, but destroyed his tyres by running too aggressively for too long)
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10 (Ran a better strategy but lacked the accuracy when coming close to Leclerc. Should have won when he ended up behind the Ferrari)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 1/10 (Spun all by himself, which he has done a lot the last one and a half seasons. Then rammed Stroll. If he cannot see, he must radio with his team and let them give him the all-clear to go!)
Charles Leclerc - 10/10 (Won from pole, got his elbows out, would definitely have been punished if he had behaved like this last year, but I am happy they let him race on. Kept nailing Parabolica with millimetre-like precision for over 40 laps)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Alexander Albon - 6/10 (Starting P8 due to the Q3 debacle, and really should have taken P4 from the Renaults)
Max Verstappen - 6/10 (Started way down, but quite frankly P8 was the minimum we could expect from Max. Would get 7/10 if not for totally miscalculating just how slow the backpack would be into Turn 1)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 9/10 (In the end just 10 seconds down on Hamilton. Easy P4 for him. WELL DONE, Danny Ric. This track clearly suited the Renault, but still)
Nico Hülkenberg - 8/10 (Another 15 seconds down the road, and only just held Albon at bay. Not as convincing as Ricciardo, despite finishing P5 in a Renault)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 2/10 (I honestly do not know why Haas are this bad! Ro-Gro got punted in Turn 1, then spun like Vettel but managed not to hit someone when rejoining. Ended up behind a Williams)
Kevin Magnussen - 5/10 (Ran OK before DNFing, clearly involved in less trouble than his French fry friend)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 7/10 (On a track where the McHonda is not strong enough, scoring points after starting far back is OK. Nothing more, but OK)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 6/10 (Was on par with Norris before the pit stop failed, resulting in a DNF)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 9/10 (He came from as far back as Verstappen, and kept the Dutchie behind. Sure, he did so thanks to pitting under VSC conditions, but it still counts. A result is a result)
Lance Stroll - 3/10 (Got punted by Vettel, then decided to repay the favour. To someone else. Did end up finishing ahead of Vettel, so there's that)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 3/10 (Weekend to forget, wasn't it? Started on the wrong tyres, crashed in Q3, and wasn't on par with Giovinazzi in race pace)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 7/10 (Decent weekend, but not much more. Has the fast Ferrari engine, started P10 but with a free selection of tyres, yet lost out to Perez who started 18th? Yeah, it was decent but not much more)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 (Really a victim of Vettel and Stroll, but he was not far from scoring a point. He was chasing Norris hard towards the end for that P10 finish. Great race, and the only reason he failed to score was not something he could control)
Daniil Kvyat - X/10 (Retired almost at the same time as Sainz, going out of the pits with smoke. I honestly don't remember where he was running, so this X can be changed into a number if you guys enlighten me)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 8/10 (Regardless of why, he finished ahead of both Kimi and Romain. Impressive)
Robert Kubica - 4/10 (One lap down on the others, and as usual not up to Russell's standard)
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on September 10, 2019, 08:16:05 AM
On lap 26, just before the pit stops for his surrounding group began, Kvyat was running in eighth place behind Albon and in front of Perez.  I don't know what the time gaps were like but seems he was doing a decent job up until his engine went bang.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

So that is roughly a 7, I suppose.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on September 10, 2019, 08:19:47 AM
Sounds fair.  I'll probably also give Carlos 7/10 as he was running strongly until the wheels came off....
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on September 17, 2019, 02:06:41 AM
Monza.

Merc:
Hammy - 8 - Had the pace to win, just not the straight-line speed.  Killed tyres in battle with 'It is I' but for many laps looked capable of getting the pass done.
Val - 7 - Didn't look capable of getting past the Ferrari despite having the fresher tyres courtesy of stopping later (by 8 laps) and of not having just spent 15 laps defending like a demon.

Ferrari:
Seb - 0 - Could the race have been any worse?
'It is I' - 9 - I'd love to have given him 10/10, but I just have to dock a point for squeezing Hammy off the road.  Should've been properly penalised by the stewards for that bit of naughtiness, or certainly for cutting the chicane when he was already on a warning.  But hey, he was driving a Ferrari in Italy....

Red Bull:
Blur - 5 - Sure, the Renaults were strong round here, but you're in a Red Bull so get past one of them at least.
Max - 6 - Made decent progress from the back.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 9 - Strong car, strong drive.
Hulk - 7 - Further off teamy than he should be.

Haas:
Big Jean - 3 - Didn't see much (any?) of the Haas guys on Channel 4's coverage, but he was running 30+ seconds behind KMag when the Dane retired.
Son of Magnus - 5 - I don't know, seemed like a middling effort.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 7 - Nicked a point, solid effort.
Rally Guy's Son - 7 - On for some decent points before his disastrous pit-stop.

Racing Point:
Perez - 9 - Healthy progress through the field and then a great job of holding back Max for the last 15 or so laps.
The Stroller - 2 - Victim of Vettel's rashness, then had a good go at taking out Gasly.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 2 - Absolutely all over the place.  A quite terrible weekend of driving.
Adam Ant - 7 - Running in the points and managed not to throw the car off the road.

Toro Rosso:
Greasy Peril - 8 - Somewhat hindered by Stroll trying to smash him out of the race.
The Torpedo - 7 - Going well until engine (turbo?) failed.

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 8 - Well ahead of Kubica, by something like 70 seconds in the end.
One-Armed Bandit - 4 - I read somewhere that he ended up about 70 seconds behind his teammate.

Lovely, thanks.

We see a lot of movement in the tight midfield, there.

Climbing:
Valterri Bottas (P10 -> P8)
Daniel Ricciardo (P12 -> P10)

Falling:
Kimi Räikkönen (P9 -> P11)
Sebastian Vettel (P11 -> P13)

Some others climb or fall one spot, but these are the ones who moved two places.

In the team standings, Renault overhaul Racing Point for P7.

Vettel's chances of a top ten finish receding with every race.  Whereas Kvyat's going great guns, I certainly didn't expect him to be so far up our rankings.

Well, Singapore will likely strengthen Vettel's chances of finishing in our top 10 this year.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 6/10 (He surely had the pace, but he did not deliver on it and his chances got destroyed by a poor strategy)
Valtteri Bottas - 6/10 (Not able to show what he got. Better strategy but forced to slow down to let Lewis slot ahead of him and Albon)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 (Started P3, ran P3, found a gap, pitted, made it work. Nice)
Charles Leclerc - 9/10 (Started P1, drove slowly, lost a gap, pitted, ended up behind Vettel. Great driving, not a great strategy. He was clearly faster than Vettel but this circuit did not lend itself to overtaking)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Alexander Albon - 7/10 (Followed Bottas home in what looked like a slightly slower car. Not up to Verstappen's speed yet, but definitely OK for a Singapore debut)
Max Verstappen - 8/10 (Beat Lewis thanks to the Mercedes strategy more than anything else. Never had to defend from Lewis, never able to attack Charles)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (A messy race altogether, but he ran strongly after being DSQ'd in quali)
Nico Hülkenberg - 8/10 (Considering that early contact, finishing in ninth is not bad at all)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 6/10 (Not sure how he finished this close to the points. He was far off the pace early on, but in the end fought back. Good strategy, perhaps? That incident with Russell did not help)
Kevin Magnussen - 4/10 (Nowhere near Romain Grosjean, although running ahead before. In the end, he had to pit to remove a plastic bag from his front wing and at least score the fastest lap. Good for him, although Kubica did overtake him with DRS assistance)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 8/10 (Sure, the SC and low pace made it possible, but he finished within 15 seconds of the race winner and P7 was the maximum for the midfield cars here)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 (With his car so badly damaged, finishing P12 was the best possible outcome. Difficult to rate)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 7/10 (Ran in the points, then stopped running. Ouchie.)
Lance Stroll - 6/10 (Ran near the points, then punctured his car a little bit. Never quite saw how it happened.)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 6/10 (Was not matching Giovinazzi anyway, and then Kvyat played his trademark torpedo card to eliminate Kimi from the race)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 (Decent showing, although I am deducting 2 points for playing with the lives of the marshals during the SC period)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 (He is beginning to show why Kvyat will remain at Toro Rosso for 2020. As soon as he was demoted, he got back into it and has been delivering for Toro Rosso. Good stuff, Gasman)
Daniil Kvyat - 5/10 (Messy race, divebombed Kimi, and ended up just in front of Kubica)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 6/10 (A mess at the start, then crashed with Grosjean to ensure the first non-finish for Williams this year)
Robert Kubica - 7/10 (Hah, he actually overtook an actual car in an actual race situation. That alone should be worth 10/10. Thanks to the SC, he finished within striking distance of the midfield)

Singapore:

Merc:
Hammy - 7 - Team didn't go for the undercut and instead got done by Ferrari strategy for the first time since...?
Val - 7 - Buggered by Ferrari's early(ish) stops and then by being a member of Hamilton's supporting cast.

Ferrari:
Seb - 8 - Good on his engineer to take advantage of Leclerc's sluggish pace, and on Seb to put in the quick laps when needed.
'It is I' - 8 - Quicker than Vettel all weekend but ended up behind thanks to sluggish pace and his team's efforts.

Red Bull:
Blur - 7 - Strong Singypour debut.
Max - 8 - Pitted early enough to beat the Mercs.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 6 - Rather ragged race.
Hulk - 5 - Points off for smashing into Sainz.

Haas:
Big Jean - 6 - Share of blame (in my view) for the Russell clash, but otherwise ran okay.
Son of Magnus - 7 - Stronger than Romain but undone by a plastic bag on the front wing forcing a late pit-stop.  Bloody plastic bags....

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 8 - Faultless drive keeps the points coming.
Rally Guy's Son - 8 - Faultless drive could've yielded useful points but unfortunately Hulk had destroyed his race on lap one.

Racing Point:
Perez - 6 - I don't know.  Okay until the car stopped.
The Stroller - 5 - Clipped the wall and punctured both a tyre and his chances of scoring.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 6 - Not been great these past two races but was running in the top ten (albeit on quite old tyres) before Kvyat took matters into his own hands.
Adam Ant - 7 - Bagged a point having briefly led the race.  First time anyone not in a Merc, Ferrari or Red Bull has been at the front since Bottas for Williams back in 2015.

Toro Rosso:
Greasy Peril - 8 - This is more like the Gasly of 2018.
The Torpedo - 4 - This is more like the Kvyat of 2017.

Williams: (Feel they've fractionally closed the gap to the other teams)
Jack - 5 - Could've left more room for Romain and then go on to finish the race.
One-Armed Bandit - 6 - Slower than Georgie but on the plus side he didn't leave Williams with a bill for repairs.

Welp, forgot to rate Japan. Oh well.

MEXICO!

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 (He did not have the pace in quali, but he sure found it in the race. Impressive stint on hards and Vettel never really had a chance to attack him)
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10 (Got caught out by Verstappen at the start, but fought back. Would have finished P2 had it not been for the absurd straight line speed advantage that Ferrari currently enjoy)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 (Clean race, just lacked the final pace. I feel like P2 was close to as good as it could get)
Charles Leclerc - 7/10 (Hurt by a poor strategy, but brought himself back into contention during that final mess of lapped cars before outbraking himself)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Alexander Albon - 7/10 (Had a great first stint but got caught, like Leclerc, by a bad strategy call. Clean race)
Max Verstappen - 6/10 (Scrappy first few laps, then ran a mammoth stint to reclaim sixth. One great stint does not balance out the poor beginning of that race)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 9/10 (Basically helped Hamilton win by proving the hards could last at a high pace. Failed to claim the best of rest honours by divebombing. Typical Ricciardo)
Nico Hülkenberg - 7/10 (Could not match Ricciardo in this race)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 4/10 (Well these cars are just disappointing. Sandwiched by the Williams cars, and should have finished behind both had Kubica not been forced to pit near the end)
Kevin Magnussen - 6/10 (Ahead of Williams at least, so that's a positive)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 7/10 (Drove well until the McLaren pit system sent a green light before the front left was attached properly. The mechanic was still working on the tyre, so he cannot be to blame)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 7/10 (That first stint was magnificent but the McLaren lacked tyre management and he ended up dropping back when he was forced to pit for a second time)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 9/10 (Came from behind, fought his way through to a magnificent P7 in front of his home crowd. Oh boy he likes racing here)
Lance Stroll - 5/10 (Did not have the pace Perez had, not even close)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - X/10 (I don't remember why he retired, but I seem to recall him being off from the start. I'll cross him out until Penfold explains what was up)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 (Had some pace, but again the Alfa just isn't fast enough here. They, together with Haas, are drifting closer to Williams instead of keeping up with the midfield)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 (A lot was happening around him, but he kept his cool. Deducting one point for battling extremely hard with Sainz whilst Vettel was behind and looking for a pass.)
Daniil Kvyat - 6/10 (Clean race for 99.5% of it. Then he decided that Hulkenberg wasn't real and did not exist, and drove his car into the Hulk. Silly dive)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 6/10 (Struggled to keep up with his Polish friend, but beat Grosjean)
Robert Kubica - 8/10 (Actually passed Russell, on-track, after fooling the young Brit big time. Nice move. Ended up pitting with 5 laps to go and dropped behind, but had the beating of both Russell and Grosjean in Mexico)

Driver of the day? It's split between Hamilton and Perez.

We also forgot to do Russia, and by now that race has been scrubbed from the temporary file sub-section of my F1 memory bank, with only a very limited highlights package uploaded into the long-term filing section.

I'll do my Mexico scores sometime this week.

There was a Russian race? Huh, must have been a disappointing one. As they usually are. Oh wait, yes, Vettel's car broke down and Mercedes won. As they usually do.

"Vettel's car broke down and Mercedes won." This seems an accurate summation - I certainly don't remember anything else from the race.

Scores later today?  Possibly.

Mexico:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Massaging those tyres to an impressive victory.
Val - 7 - Nothing humorous/intelligent comes to mind.  Edit: Just deducted one point for qualifying crash.

Ferrari:
Seb - 8 - Think they waited a few laps too long before pitting - lost quite a few seconds in a short space of time.
'It is I' - 7 - Strategy played its part, but also surprised he couldn't use tyre advantage to take Bottas at the end.

Red Bull:
Blur - 7 - Clean but not that fast given the car's stellar performance round here.
Max - 6 - Stupid error in qualifying; hit Hammy at the race start; clipped Bottas further on (bit unlucky with that one); then drove impressively to haul himself to sixth.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 9 - Great stint on the hards; touch optimistic on the Perez move - needs to remember he's not in a Red Bull.
Hulk - 7 - Didn't match Ricky in this one, then got Kvyatted.

Haas:
Big Jean - 4 - Wow, this must be a new low for Haas in 2019.  It was also a particularly poor showing by Romain.
Son of Magnus - 6 - Way down the field but ahead of his team mate - a long, long way ahead.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - X - Out too early for me to score.  Well, I know he didn't retire until lap 48, but he was just pootling around by himself after that pit-stop.
Rally Guy's Son - 7 - Obliged to pit early after qualifying inside the top ten on softs; unlikely to make it on one stop, but doubly screwed as the hards really didn't seem to work on his car.

Racing Point:
Perez - 9 - Showing his teamy how to do it.
The Stroller - 5 - Rather a long way off Sergio.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 6 - Picked up some floor damage at the start which obviously didn't help; eventually retired with cooling issues (for the car, not himself).
Adam Ant - 5 - Didn't pick up floor damage at the start and was still slower than Kimi.

Toro Rosso:
Greasy Peril - 7 - Another one hampered by the daft qualifying tyre rules, but had a reasonable race.
The Torpedo - 5 - Repeat after me: I will not crash into other cars and get stroppy when penalized by the stewards.

Williams: (Still miles behind everyone)
Jack - 6 - Bested by Roberto.
One-Armed Bandit - 7 - Had the measure of Jack this time.

Rest of words to follow - not sure why I started with the midfield drivers!
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on November 06, 2019, 01:32:21 AM
Ohkay then. Austin TX.

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 10/10 (Becoming a 6-time world champion is always going to be 10/10. The race itself was 8/10, in the end he didn't quite make the strategy work and a yellow flag saved him from Verstappen. P5 to P2 is great, though)
Valtteri Bottas - 9/10 (Pole to win, but had to work hard for it. Great stuff, and it must have felt amazing to pass Hamilton for the win even though the title battle ended)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - X/10 (Abysmal first lap, and early DNF. Hard to tell whether he did something wrong, or if the car was broken from the very start)
Charles Leclerc - 7/10 (Had no ability to keep up with the top drivers, and only kept P4 from Albon thanks to the Thai driver suffering damage at the start)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Alexander Albon - 7/10 (Got tangled with Sainz, was not allowed to use hards due to Pirelli saying so, and fought his way back to finish ahead of the midfield. Decent)
Max Verstappen - 8/10 (Tried to force the Mercedes cars into pitting early, and got Bottas to join him. That set Verstappen up to pass Hamilton, but he ended up not achieving that. Still, a podium is a podium and he was just 5 seconds behind the winner)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 9/10 (One of two midfield drivers not lapped, and ran a long stint. Tires ran out near the end, and he himself said he could never have kept Norris behind for another lap)
Nico Hülkenberg - 6/10 (With the added benefit of choosing tyres from 11th on the grid, finishing ninth is not good enough. Especially when one of those positions came from Vettel, and the other from Gasly. In reality, then, the Hulk passed nobody)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 6/10 (It's getting hard to rate Haas. Their car is so very poor, they are basically battling it out with Williams at this point)
Kevin Magnussen - 6/10 (It's getting hard to rate Haas. Their car is so very poor, they are basically battling it out with Williams at this point)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 9/10 (See Ricciardo, except the end stint was shorter so he had fresher tyres but failed to make the pass stick. Still, two-stopping and finishing 7th was impressive)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 (Another strong showing, but he did not quite keep up with Norris here. Started ahead, finished behind)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 9/10 (Pit lane to points? Noice. Well done, Señor Perez)
Lance Stroll - 5/10 (If your buddy friend starts in the pits, passes you, and beats you by a lot, your race was not very good. That's how this all went for Stroll)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 (P17 to P11? Nice. The Alfa just looks slow, but he got the most out of it and finished just ten places behind his previous result here. Meh.)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 (Lost out to Kimi at the start and never looked like challenging him. In reality, Giovinazzi finished last, because only Haases and Williamses finished behind him)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 (Broke the suspension after battling with Perez due to Gasly's tires running out)
Daniil Kvyat - 4/10 (Broke Perez's car after torpedoing him due to Perez's tires running out)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 5/10 (The only driver lapped twice, and ended up classified behind Gasly despite Gasly retiring. That's how far behind Williams ran here)
Robert Kubica - 4/10 (Sure, he ran half the race before retiring. Always slightly behind Russell. I think Kubica is now just longing for this season to be over)
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers

Time to throw some scores about for the U.S.A.

Merc:
Hammy - 8 - Another master class in tyre conservation (and late yellow flags) elevated him to second place after a less than stellar qualifying.
Val - 9 - Pity we didn't have this Valerie for the entire season.  Hopefully he is now bedded in at Merc and can give Lewis a decent fight next year.

Ferrari:
Seb - X - Car looked a handful and then it snapped.  Literally.
'It is I' - 7 - Absence of grip made it a tough race for the lone Ferrari pilot.

Red Bull:
Blur - 7 - Damage at start of race dropped him to the back, but despite also being compromised by not having a set of hards to use (one was cracked), he brought the car home in a respectable 5th.
Max - 8 - Fast enough to keep the Mercs honest, perhaps could've had second were it not for the KMag yellow flags.

Renault:
Ricky Hairdo - 9 - The Tyre Whisperer kept those hards rolling for even longer than Hammy.
Hulk - 6 - As the Chrill said, gifted a free choice of tyres having qualified 11th and yet he scraped into the top ten courtesy of retirements.

Haas:
Big Jean - 6 - I mean, how the hell do we rate these guys?
Son of Magnus - 6 - What I just said.

McLaren:
Chuck Norris - 9 - Started off the year strongly and has only improved with experience; going to be a close battle with Sainz in '20.
Rally Guy's Son - 8 - Scruffy first corner, then always looked like he was playing second fiddle to Norris.

Racing Point:
Perez - 8 - Still showing his teamy how to do it.  Deducted one point for his weighbridge cock up.
The Stroller - 5 - Once again, he is rather a long way off Sergio.

Alfauber:
Kimi - 7 - Didn't finish ahead of anyone decent, but then the car doesn't really have it in it anymore.
Adam Ant - 6 - Still not as quick as Kimi - quelle surprise!

Toro Rosso:
Greasy Peril - 7 - Not sure what happened between him and Perez (besides it breaking Pierre's car), but he ran well to that point.
The Torpedo - 4 - Repeat after me: I will not crash into other cars and get stroppy when penalized by the stewards.

Williams: (Still miles behind everyone)
Jack - 6 - Car's performance woeful; Jack's seemed decent enough - considerably quicker than Rob when he was still out on track.
One-Armed Bandit - 4 - I suspect Chrill is bang on about Kubica counting down the days until he doesn't have to set foot in this car.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on November 20, 2019, 03:25:52 AM
Yasss queen, it's Brazil!

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 6/10 (He tried to win, but the fact is Verstappen passed him much too easily. Twice, was it not? Then, punting Albon removes one point from his tally of 7.)
Valtteri Bottas - 6/10 (He was not fast enough, but was also put on a poor strategy. No point deduction means he equals Hamilton despite having a worse weekend)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 3/10 (Nooo. Don't veer into your teammate and take each other off! Before that, Vettel was struggling to keep a podium spot despite starting 2nd. Mediocre)
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 (P14 to P3 or P2 would have been his result had he not crashed. I'm not deducting a point for the crash with Vettel, so he'll keep his 8 points here)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Alexander Albon - 8/10 (Stayed well out of trouble, was aggressive in the restarts, beat the Ferraris really well. Dit not fully have the pace to challenge Verstappen for a win, I think, before being spun by Hamilton. Big shame)
Max Verstappen - 10/10 (Pole, blocked in pits, overtakes Hamilton, safety cars, great strategy calls, and a really nice drive. This is the clearest 10 in a while)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (Deducting one for spinning Magnussen early on, but that recovery was great. Without all the top drivers crashing, he would still have scored maybe one or two points. Good stuff)
Nico Hülkenberg - 5/10 (Minus one for passing before SC, but even then he only finished 12th before being demoted. Behind a team mate who suffered a penalty, then)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 8/10 (Finally a decent Haas car, I feel. Still, Russell managed to beat Grosjean near the end thanks to those Safety Cars. Not quite good enough. EDIT: Revisited his score after reading this: https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/haas-brazil-mgu-k-podium-grosjean/4600463/)
Kevin Magnussen - 8/10 (Sure, lots of cars DNFed, but he kept his cool and very nearly scored the first Haas points in a while. Well done, considering he was spun early on)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 6/10 (Played the team game after being unable to switch on the hard tyre properly. Not a great race)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 10/10 (P20 to P8? That alone is perhaps worth 10. Five of the top six mess up? Great, that makes P8 a P3 instead. Well done. Keeping Alfa Romeo behind despite ABSURDLY worn mediums? Amazing)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 6/10 (Well, he never crashed with anyone. Most others did. That's why he scored two points. Had it not been for the top drivers messing up, this would have been a very mediocre race)
Lance Stroll - 5/10 (Like Perez but slower. And then his car hit debris and he was out)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 (Seven points for an Alfa in fourth? ABSURD, you may say. Well, the fact is he should have beaten Sainz. He really should have. P4 would have been P9 had it not been for the mess, so that's worthy of 8)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 8/10 (Followed Kimi home, but arguably looked faster in those final laps. Could he have taken the challenge to Sainz, if given the opportunity? We'll never know)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 9/10 (A Toro Rosso in 2nd, surely that's 10/10? Nah. Once again, this was a drive to P7. Best of the rest? Sure! But he started best of the rest, too. That's worthy of a 9)
Daniil Kvyat - 5/10 (Considering where Gasly finished, being 10th is nowhere near good enough for Kvyat)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 8/10 (He's 12th. 16 drivers finished, and he's ahead of several. Among those a Grosjean who he genuinely passed. Then, a spun Albon and a demoted Hulkenberg also split Russell and Kubica.)
Robert Kubica - 5/10 (A lap down on Russell, but was running ahead early on in the race. Kubica shows decent racecraft, the first few laps are often pretty neat. Then, he just lacks the pace. Sorry, Kubbie)

Liking your scoring & commentary for Brazil; 'twas well worth noting that the massacre amongst the top runners flattered others' positions.  When I do eventually get round to doing mine, and let's be positive and say it'll be sometime this week, I think the difference between our ratings will be miniscule.

Lovely. With one race to go, the tables are looking pretty set.

If it was up to us then, and our best rated drivers would drive the fastest cars, the 2020 grid I guess should look a little like this:

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport:
33. Max Verstappen
55. Carlos Sainz

Scuderia Ferrari:
44. Lewis Hamilton
16. Charles Leclerc

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
4. Lando Norris
77. Valtteri Bottas

McLaren F1 Team:
3. Daniel Ricciardo
23. Alexander Albon

Renault F1 Team:
63. George Russell
11. Sergio Perez

Scuderia Alpha Tauri Honda:
7. Kimi Räikkönen
26. Daniil Kvyat

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
5. Sebastian Vettel
27. Nico Hülkenberg

Alfa Romeo Racing:
10. Pierre Gasly
18. Lance Stroll

Haas F1 Team:
88. Robert Kubica
8. Romain Grosjean

ROKiT Williams Racing:
20. Kevin Magnussen
99. Antonio Giovinazzi

So, to sum it up, I suppose Haas is rocking pretty much what we can expect of them.

Whereas Williams is clearly getting much better than it deserves; I'd suggest a couple of guys/gals who have rolled up to a Silverstone track day would be more fitting.

There are a couple of pairings I'd quite love to see.

First of all, Lewis and Charles at Ferrari is hot. Obviously. Norris and Bottas at Red Bull feels a bit mediocre, but sure. Ricciardo in a McLaren feels nice too.

Vettel and the Hulk at Force Point Racing India is pretty hot, that team definitely benefitted from these changes.
Title: Re: 2019 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on December 02, 2019, 06:18:14 AM
Let us rate the drivers one final time for 2019:

Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport:
Lewis Hamilton - 10/10 (Impossible to rate him less than 10. Held the lead at the start, built a gap, maintained it, led every single lap, fastest lap. Grand slam. Boom. That's how to do it)
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10 (Started far back, hindered by DRS being disabled, but found his way past a Ferrari and a Red Bull. Neat)

Scuderia Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 6/10 (Fairly poor, over a minute behind Lewis, and 20 behind Leclerc)
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 (Hey, reached the podium thanks to a decent start where he found his way past Verstappen. Lost out somewhere around the pit stops, pitted too early and forced himself into a two-stopper)

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing:
Alexander Albon - 6/10 (Not his strongest race for Red Bull)
Max Verstappen - 8/10 (The only one even remotely capable of matching Lewis)

Renault F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (Dropped back from a decent starting position, but at least he fought his way past the Hulk when Sainz was battling him)
Nico Hülkenberg - 6/10 (Started right behind Ricciardo, finished right behind Ricciardo. Mediocre end to a mediocre F1 career. That 2009 pole in Brazil promised more than we got)

Rich Energy Haas F1 Team:
Romain Grosjean - 6/10 (Back where they belong. At the rear)
Kevin Magnussen - 6/10 (See RoGro)

McLaren F1 Team:
Lando Norris - 8/10 (Very nearly held on to the best of the rest honours after making his strategy work much better than Sainz did. In the end, it wasn't to be)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 7/10 (Struggled with tyre degradation, opted for a two-stopper, sort of made it work)

SportPesa Racing Point F1 Team:
Sergio Perez - 9/10 (The last driver to start on softs, which should hinder his progress. Still, he made it all happen in Abu Dhabi. Boom)
Lance Stroll - 4/10 (Poor race. Very poor. Crashed into Gasly, had no pace, and then retired the car due to issues with them there brakes)

Alfa Romeo Racing:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10 (When it comes to it, he beats Giovinazzi)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 (Not yet up to par with a 40-year old gentleman driver)

Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda:
Pierre Gasly - X/10 (Hit at the start, no chance to catch up. Should have just retired on the spot)
Daniil Kvyat - 7/10 (Clean race, unusually enough. When that happens, a decent haul of points is available. P9? Not terrible, not great)

ROKiT Williams Racing:
George Russell - 8/10 (Chased the Alfa of Antonio near the end, but was never close enough to try something)
Robert Kubica - 5/10 (Finished his comeback one lap behind Russell. Nope, this was not his year)

Afraid I didn't watch that one.  You'll have to tally my 2019 scores sans Abu Dhabi.
