I'm still deep in contemplation... you know I don't like to rush these things.

Teams ordered in expected (guessed at) 2017 WCC positions.

Australia:

Merc:
Hammy - 7 - Uninspiring in race but good pole lap bumps him up by one.
Val - 7 - Solid pace for first race with team.

Ferrari:
Seb - 10 - Perfection.
Kimi - 6 - Not even close.

Red Bull:
Dan - 4 - Thou shalt not crash in qualifying....
Max - 8 - Fifth in quali, fifth in race... that's all the car had in it.

Williams:
Baby - 8 - Didn't put a foot wrong.
Stroll - 6 - Did put a foot wrong, but not a terrible first race so I'll be slightly generous with scoring.

Force India:
Perez - 9 - I'm not writing an explanatory note for all of these....
Ocon - 8 - Or am I?

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 8 - No, I'm not.
Kvyat - 8 - I'd say he matched Carlos' performance.

McLaren:
Alonso - 9 - Everything from the car, and a little bit more.
Van Door - 7 - Technical issues in quali & race make it tough to judge.

Haas:
Big Jean - 9 - Let down by car.
Son of Magnus - 3 - Let down by lack of talent.

Renault:
Hulk - 7 - It was okay.
Palmer - 4 - Not so much; though hindered (then stopped) by brake issues in race.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 6 - Not exactly helped by KMag's first corner heroics.  Still, shock of the weekend is that I've awarded him a higher score than his mate has.
Gio - 9 - Such a good debut, too bad he doesn't get the rest of the season.

My only objection is that Massa doesn't have a nickname in your list. How about Old Man, or Pensioner?

Other than that, do please maintain the same order of drivers as I have. It helps when I fill in the pretty pretty Excel document that I use to collect data :P

Seeing how the highest average of anyone in 2016 was 7.5, I think it's fair to say Giovinazzi will come out the best driver of the season. He's 8 for me, 9 for you, so that'll put him on 8.5 average. Decent enough.

Okay, from next race teams will be placed in your (incorrect) order....

Took your point on Massa and adjusted his name accordingly.

My incorrect order is also the order the teams finished in 2016  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Wow.  So you're suggesting that using the actual ranking order of teams in the previous season is a more logical approach than relying on my guesses of where they'll finish in 2017?  Sometimes you can be so cruel....

Let's go to China.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 10/10
Valtteri Bottas – 5/10

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 7/10
Max Verstappen – 9/10

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 9/10
Kimi Räikkönen – 5/10

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 8/10
Esteban Ocon – 7/10

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 5/10
Lance Stroll – 4/10

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 10/10
Stoffel Vandoorne – 7/10

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 9/10
Daniil Kvyat – 6/10

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 6/10
Kevin Magnussen – 8/10

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 6/10
Jolyon Palmer – 4/10

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 5/10
Antonio Giovinazzi – 3/10

A lot of high scores today. I usually don't award 10 points, now I've given out 3 of them in 2 races!!

Abysmal performances from Stroll and Giovinazzi, the two rookies. Apparently unable to handle the tricky conditions and the new cars. Giovinazzi made the very same error twice and it penalised him hard both times.

Alonso keeps doing what he should not be able to in the McLaren, and totally destroys Vandoorne whom I rate highly.

All in all some good drives all around. Bottas and Raikkonen disappointed me today.

I should do after all these years.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on April 11, 2017, 07:34:44 AM
We made it to tomorrow.

China:

Merc:
Hammy - 10 - Both feet in exactly the right place at all times.
Val - 5 - I'm tempted to say rookie errors....

Red Bull:
Dan - 7 - Caught, passed, and ultimately beaten by team-mate who started eleven spots further back.
Max - 10 - Caught, passed, and ultimately beat team-mate who started eleven spots further ahead.

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - Would've been a ten if not for his shabby start.
Kimi - 5 - What can I say about Kimi... umm, well he normally goes well in Bahrain which is up next.

Force India:
Perez - 7 - Strong performance in quali; team-mate ran him close in race.
Ocon - 7 - Stacking up well to Sergio.

Williams:
Baby - 5 - Car is plainly weak in these conditions but didn't exactly cover himself in glory.
Stroll - 3 - Not sure why he was so surprised to have another car going up the inside on lap one.

McHonda - Good job we're not doing team scores as I'd hate to have to put a big, fat zero next to their name:
Alonso - 10 - Drove the doors off it... and then it died.
Van Door - 5 - Seven tenths behind in qualifying... seven bloody tenths for Christ's sake.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 9 - A ten if not for his spin.
Kvyat - 7 - Bettered Sainz in quali, not so much in the race.

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - Weak race.
Son of Magnus - 8 - Surprisingly strong one.

Renault:
Hulk - 6 - Points off for speeding, and speeding again.
Palmer - 5 - Blah.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 6 - Yeah, it was okay given car's obvious limitations.
Gio - 2 - F1 is an unforgiving business, and the same can be true of my scoring.

Edit: I've bumped Bottas up a point to a now magnificent five.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers

Bahrain.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 5/10 (One point deducted for the pit lane incident with Ricciardo)
Valtteri Bottas – 6/10 (Great quali, great first lap, poor rest of race)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 7/10 (It's difficult to be more anonymous, yet still involved in incidents and finishing in the top 5)
Max Verstappen – 5/10 (Brake failure. Meh)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 9/10 (Tempted to go for another 10, but choosing not to because he should have qualified on the front row for that)
Kimi Räikkönen – 5/10 (Still very pale in comparison to his mate. P4 is better than his performance deserved)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 9/10 (What's that, 13 races in a row in the points? And from P18? Nice)
Esteban Ocon – 8/10 (Solid 10th finish, again. Does a decent enough job)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 9/10 (Can't do much better. Would have been a 10 had he kept Kimi behind him for longer)
Lance Stroll – 6/10 (Hard to rate, because he just can't finish a race. Not his fault this time)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 7/10 (I'm deducting 1 point because he is very unsportsmanlike towards McLaren. "We are thinking plan B, how does the tyres feel?" "Do what you want". Not very helpful)
Stoffel Vandoorne – X/10 (Well. Yeah)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 3/10 (Abysmal performance, crashing both his team mate and the young Canadian boy)
Daniil Kvyat – 5/10 (Pretty invisible throughout the race. Not very exciting)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 8/10 (Keeps getting the max out of his car. Not bad)
Kevin Magnussen – 5/10 (Once again a not-so-memorable performance. I can't even recall why he retired. Did it break down? Did he crash?)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 9/10 (Well, that wasn't bad. Q3 followed up by his first points of the year. Solid driving in a car not as solid)
Jolyon Palmer – 4/10 (Once again thoroughly destroyed by the Hulk, even running behind the very slow Ericsson)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 6/10 (Tried to 1-stop and the safety car messed it all up. Decent driving, just nowhere near anybody else)
Pascal Wehrlein – 8/10 (Very impressive return to the grid. Tempted to 9/10, but he should've scored a point then!)

Bahrain:

Merc:
Hammy - 7 - And that's with one point off for pit-lane shenanigans.
Val - 5 - Just so slow.

Red Bull - Car can't yet fight with Ferrari/Merc but is comfortably ahead of the rest, leaving drivers stranded in no man's land.
Dan - 7 - Best of 'the rest'.
Max - 6 - Not even Max can drive without rear brakes....

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - Almost perfect.
Kimi - 4 - No idea what's going on.

Force India:
Perez - 9 - Out of place after quali so places gained is exaggerated, but still a cracking drive.
Ocon - 7 - A step behind Sergio but v. good given his experience.

Williams - A dry race, hurrah!
Baby - 9 - Seems more energised than last year, perhaps relishing role as undisputed team leader.
Stroll - 6 - Stilll too far off Massa but was running okay after first stop and making up places, then came Sainz.

McHonda - Another big, fat zero for the team:
Alonso - 8 - Still driving the doors off it for no reward....
Van Door - X - No comment needed.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 2 - For the crash and his subsequent delusional comments about it.
Kvyat - 5 - For not doing anything particularly wrong... or right.

Haas:
Big Jean - 8 - Agree with your score & reasoning.
Son of Magnus - 5 - And here as well.  Car ground to a halt, don't know why... probably because it's a Haas.

Renault:
Hulk - 10 - You might shy away from the big ten but I'm handing it to Hulk for this one.  Perfect on both days.
Palmer - 3 - Massive points deduction for being so far behind team-mate - and one more for clipping Kvyat.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 5 - Outclassed by Pascal on both days.
Blaise - 9 - What a way to return.  I think his best performance in F1.

Let's do Russia, then. An exciting race in the end, but there was not ONE overtake for position after the Safety Car. Not. One. Sochi is simply a useless circuit.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 5/10 (What a mediocre weekend for him. Only P4 in quali and destroyed by his team mate and by both Ferrari drivers. One to forget.)
Valtteri Bottas – 10/10 (It's another 10. Beat his team mate in quali, great getaway at the start and kept Vettel behind him at the end. Could not ask for more)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 6/10 (Disappeared too soon)
Max Verstappen – 7/10 (Drove solo the entire race. No idea if he was great or poor because the Red Bull is far better than all cars except the top two. It's also far worse than the top two)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 8/10 (Pole position, great! Lost the start, not as great. Looked set for a proper comeback in the end but did not pull it off)
Kimi Räikkönen – 8/10 (Actually on par with his team mate in both quali and race. I'm glad)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 8/10 (Keeps scoring the maximum points, keeps beating his team mate)
Esteban Ocon – 7/10 (Keeps scoring points too, but should start beating his team mate)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 9/10 (Once more, he is best of the rest. Appears to be relishing this opportunity to dominate his team mate)
Lance Stroll – 6/10 (Great, he actually finished. It's about time he started helping with points too. Your honey moon period is over)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – X/10 (Did not start)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 5/10 (Only just managaed to beat the Saubers. Mediocre)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 7/10 (Scored points from far back. Pretty decent, but nothing more than decent)
Daniil Kvyat – 5/10 (Home race? Extremely invisible race. Poor)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 3/10 (Clumsy start)
Kevin Magnussen – 4/10 (Perhaps he should just have joined his team mate in the first lap. Not at all impressive)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 9/10 (P8 is good, especially when compared to...)
Jolyon Palmer – 4/10 (...Palmer. Should have seen Grosjean divebombing. Didn't. Shame)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 8/10 (Finally a strong race. Convincingly beat Wehrlein after emerging in front at the pit stops. Tried to get close to Stoffel Vandoorne but couldn't quite make it happen despite a speed advantage)
Pascal Wehrlein – 6/10 (If you finish last, 6/10 is the best you can get. Some 10 seconds behind Ericsson, although did qualify ahead of him)

Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on May 10, 2017, 03:41:01 AM
Whiff-whaff....

Russia (sans my usual comprehensive witty commentary):

Merc:
Hammy - 5
Val - 10

Red Bull
Dan - 7
Max - 7

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - Just a notch above team-mate
Kimi - 8 - Just a notch behind....

Force India:
Perez - 8 - What I said about Vettel
Ocon - 7 - What I said about Kimi....

Williams
Baby - 8
Stroll - 6 - Stilll too slow.

McHonda - Good grief.
Alonso - X
Van Door - 6 - Poor; but was it him, the car, or a joint effort?

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 8
Kvyat - 6

Haas:
Big Jean - 2 - Has he decided to alternate decent races with crap ones?
Son of Magnus - 4

Renault:
Hulk - 10 - All the car had to offer
Palmer - 4

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 7
Blaise - 6

The Race: 4/10  I really, really, really, really, really despise this circuit.  It is just so fecking awful.  Still, at least Barcelona normally produces exciting races... right?
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on May 14, 2017, 02:53:41 PM
[spanish_sound_pronounciation]¡Hola a todos! Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya[/spanish_sound_pronounciation]

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 9/10 (Lost the start. Did everything right after that)
Valtteri Bottas – 5/10 (Lost the start. Then punted Kimi and Verstappen off the track. Then nowhere to be found. Then let Vettel past him too easily. Then retired)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 8/10 (Podium not on merit but by default. No one else was around to score it. Did his best, still one full minute behind the leading duo)
Max Verstappen – x/10 (Couldn't do anything about the first corner incident)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 9/10 (Won the start. Did everything right after that, except winning)
Kimi Räikkönen – x/10 (See Verstappen)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 8/10 (Stayed out of trouble and scored fantastic points for his team)
Esteban Ocon – 8/10 (See Perez)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 5/10 (So very poor. Punted Alonso off the track in turn 2, and then had a really bad race)
Lance Stroll – 2/10 (Despite what Massa did, Stroll could not beat him. This was quite an awful weekend for him. Really poor)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 6/10 (Great quali, but poor in race. Behind both Saubers!!)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 4/10 (Battling it out with the Williams cars before forgetting to look where he's going. Absolute rookie error, that should not happen in F1)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 7/10 (Should have found a way past Wehrlein. Really)
Daniil Kvyat – 6/10 (Not bad, just not quite on the level of Sainz. And since Sainz scored 7, well Kvyat scores 6)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 6/10 (He scored points, but only because all his midfield rivals messed up. Was not a great drive, but also wasn't poor. Decent is the word, yeah)
Kevin Magnussen – 4/10 (P14? How? Did that many cars even finish the race?)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 9/10 (In a world where Force India is apparently ahead of the midfield, Nico must be the best of the rest. Solid. Nice)
Jolyon Palmer – 3/10 (Why is he even still in F1? He only beat Stroll. He. Only. Beat. Stroll. Not good enough, especially when your team mate finishes P6)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 8/10 (Really solid drive, was on for points until unlucky with the VSC. Pulled off some great, and uncharacteristic, overtaking moves. Twice past Stroll and also passing Alonso.
Pascal Wehrlein – 9/10 (A definite 10/10. Only it wasn't 10/10 because he failed to enter the pits which cost him P7. Still, definitely my driver of the race. Wow!)
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers

Spain:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Nearly perfect
Val - 6 - Won't dock points for racing incident at turn 1; will dock points for being off the pace.

Red Bull
Dan - 8 - Solid but didn't have to actually race anybody....
Max - X

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - Fluffed quali but made amends at race start.
Kimi - X

Force India:
Perez - 8 - Obviously benefiting from carnage ahead but great points for team.
Ocon - 8 - As Perez.

Williams
Baby - 5 - Ruined race by driving into Alonso (although Stoffel didn't help).  Team said car had pace to beat Force Indias, instead they get zero points.
Stroll - 2 - No help on that front from Stroll.  Painfully slow compared to Massa.

McHonda
Alonso - 6 - Great quali but lack of straight-line speed means overtaking still incredibly difficult.
Van Door - 2 - Miles behind Alonso in quali and then turned into Massa.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 8 - V. good but not spectacular.
Kvyat - 6 - Shocked to see him beaten by Sainz....

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - Decided to throw a mediocre performance into the mix.
Son of Magnus - 3 - Not even mediocre

Renault:
Hulk - 9 - Another cracking result.
Palmer - 2 - Another crap one.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 8 - Unlucky with timing of safety car compared to team-mate.
Blaise - 9 - Great drive; one off for pit mistake.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers

Must get round to doing Monaco.  Bit of an odd one to score what with the race being such a procession; basically it's quali. performance relative to team-mate and then with points off for errors on Sunday.  Not going to be a good tally for Mr. Van Door....
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on June 01, 2017, 02:14:15 AM
Even I forgot Monaco ratings. It was that poor, the race.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 4/10 (Who knew he could be this bad? Don't even blame Vandoorne for crashing in Q2, Lewis had 14 minutes to set a competitive lap time before that and failed)
Valtteri Bottas – 8/10 (The Mercedes was badly equipped for Monaco, but he put it third on grid and fourth in race. Kept Verstappen behind by matching his strategy, Ricciardo made full use of that)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 9/10 (Qualified 5th but made up for it in the race. Podium!)
Max Verstappen – 6/10 (Really the numbers for Red Bull could be reversed had their strategies panned out differently. It is what it is.)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 9/10 (Almost a perfect 10. Should have scored the pole)
Kimi Räikkönen – 9/10 (Scored the pole! Should have won. Not that great in the race but still comfortably second)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 4/10 (For once not a great race. How unusual!)
Esteban Ocon – 5/10 (Also out of the points. Sorryyyyyy)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 9/10 (The Williams car should not score points in Monaco. Massa scored points in Monaco. From way back on the grid. Enough said)
Lance Stroll – 3/10 (Dead last, like always. Was he even in the race?)

McLaren:
Jenson Button – 2/10 (only beat Vandoorne by default, then pitted and ended up behind BOTH Saubers. HOW?! Wehrlein was ahead of you. HOW?! Then he crashed the poor German. Will serve a grid penalty in his next race, which is never)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 3/10 (Yes. He crashed both in quali and race. Still better than Button)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 9/10 (Qualified a beautiful sixth. Stayed there too, keeping Lewis behind. Solid)
Daniil Kvyat – 7/10 (Reliable ninth on grid, ended up not finishing. Who to blame? Not him. Still, 3 placed behind teammate on grid is substantial)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 8/10 (Should have scored points from 8th on the grid. Did)
Kevin Magnussen – 7/10 (Didn't make Q3, ended up points due to retirements ahead of him. Stayed out of trouble which many other did not)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 7/10 (Retired early after just qualifying in 10th courtesy of a Q3 appearance.)
Jolyon Palmer – 4/10 (So far behind Nico. Come on, Renault, kick him out. Sign Vergne or Heidfeld or whoever in Formula E. Do it now)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 6/10 (Was running ahead of Wehrlein and had fresher tyres too. Then he forgot that brake temperatures may change under Safety Car and made an absolute fool of himself. Poor. Removing 1 point for that)
Pascal Wehrlein – 7/10 (Qualified ahead of Marcus. Beat Button in the pits. Then ended up on his side. Strange accident. Not his fault)

Monaco:

Merc:
Hammy - 4 - Quite terrible.
Val - 8 - Quite good.

Red Bull
Dan - 7 - Half a second off Max in quali, clipped wall in race, but came home 3rd thanks to luck of the strategy.
Max - 8 - Faster than Dan and error free.

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - Impressive turn of speed after Kimi pitted.
Kimi - 8 - Seb showed the car/tyres had pace to pull a bigger gap to rest of field before he pitted.

Force India:
Perez - 3 - Massive points deduction for crashing into Kyvat - a move at least as optimistic as Button's on Wehrlein.
Ocon - 5 - Well off in quali and nowhere in race.

Williams
Baby - 8 - Strong effort to grab a couple of points.
Stroll - 3 - Over one second off Massa in quali....

McHonda
Chip Butty - 3 - Didn't crash in quali but stuck at back of grid through Honda penalty.  Points off for clumsy attempt on Pascal.
Van Door - 2 - Crashed.  Crashed again.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 9 - Somebody give this guy a top tier car.
Kvyat - 7 - Okay but not spectacular... and then Perez showed up.

Haas:
Big Jean - 8 - This time a good race.
Son of Magnus - 7 - And one for him as well.  Remarkable.

Renault:
Hulk - 7 - Only qualified twelfth (started tenth after grid penalties) but way ahead of teamy.
Palmer - 3 - So far behind Hulk.  Three points almost seems generous but at least he saw the chequered flag on Sunday.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 5 - Actually seemed to have better pace than Wehrlein during race, too bad that I deduct heavily for dumb crashes.
Blaise - 6 - Completely unremarkable performance, except for the failed attempt at some stunt driving in collaboration with JB.

Courtesy of being in the Czech Republic over the Canadian GP weekend, I will not be rating. I managed to catch the start over a rather unreliable 3g connection before I went to dinner at a restaurant with no reception or wifi. So yeah. I saw Vettel go ouchie on his front wing, Verstappen pull to a halt, and that's about it.

In that case I'll let you off.  My scores will be up sometime this side of Baku....

Canada:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Pole and a flawless race but no real racing required as rivals taken out of the equation.
Val - 7 - Seems fair given performance gap to his team-mate.

Red Bull
Dan - 7 - Podium but not a spectacular showing.
Max - 8 - Faster than Dan & a tremendous start - once again let down by car.

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - Great recovery drive after being clipped by Max; overtake on Ocon stands out.
Kimi - 7 - Seems fair given performance gap to his team-mate.

Force India:
Perez - 9 - Tough to see team top this weekend; v. good drives by both...
Ocon - 9 - ... and tremendous entertainment in closing stages as they duked it out.

Williams
Baby - X - Taken out by Sainz in a race which should've afforded team decent points (he out-qualified both Force Indias).
Stroll - 6 - Got to the end & scored first F1 points but car had much more in it than a ninth.

McHonda
Alonso - 7 - Was on for a point until car died.
Van Door - 5 - Was never on for a point.  Not even close.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 3 - Squeezed Big Jean on lap 1 causing himself to crash and collect Massa on the way.
Kvyat - 7 - Umm, can't remember what happened to him (car died?), but think he was running okay until then.

Haas:
Big Jean - 7 - Okay.
Son of Magnus - 6 - A tad off okay.

Renault:
Hulk - 8 - Usual strong showing.
Palmer - 5 - Pretty awful in quali but not horrific in race.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 6 - Hard to score as I didn't really notice either Sauber during the race, but, umm, better than his teamy.
Blaise - 5 - Crashed in quali, ran at back in race.

Here we go, I am back to rating! Azerbaijan GP, yes it is:

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 8/10 (Should have won. Messed it up behind the SC, before being unlucky with his neck protection or whatever that was. Still, a very solid drive)
Valtteri Bottas – 9/10 (Was lucky to survive turn 2 which was caused by Bottas, but still wasn't really his fault. Made up for it by finishing second after an amazing recovery. Good stuff)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 10/10 (Starts P10, suffers brake issues forcing a pit stop. Wins. WHAT?! How?!)
Max Verstappen – 6/10 (I don't even recall seeing him in this race)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 3/10 (What was that? You crashed into your championship rival on purpose. You are a four time world champion. Disgraceful)
Kimi Räikkönen – 8/10 (Was on course to win when Vettel and Hamilton hit trouble (and each other). Very unlucky to suffer puncture from the Force India debacle)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 8/10 (Cannot be blamed for his collision with Ocon. Drove his heart out and was awarded with nothing)
Esteban Ocon – 6/10 (Drove a real good race, but simply left too little room for Perez. Can be blamed for that. Deducting points)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 9/10 (Oh no!!! I was hoping for the Brazilian anthem today. We could have had, we should have heard it. Great driving, but ended up retiring the car after a suspension failure)
Lance Stroll – 10/10 (Well, what can we say? In a race packed with incidents, the youngest driver on the grid kept his head down and avoided every single incident. He finished in P3 not because he was the fastest, but because he drove the smartest and safest race. Very mature drive)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 9/10 (The McLaren does not deserve points. Alonso deserves championships. Solid as ever)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 4/10 (Starting to ask questions now. Out of the 12 drivers who finished the race without major incidents, he was 12th. Behind both Saubers, even. Not good enough)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 7/10 (Was perhaps too cautious when spinning into the first corner at the start, but ended up in solid points despite that. Good enough)
Daniil Kvyat – 5/10 (Missed turn 1, dived back on track only to scare his team mate. Then retired within 10 laps.)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 4/10 (Struggling with brakes all race. I am starting to think it's Grosjean, not the brakes, causing these issues. Noone else has them)
Kevin Magnussen – 9/10 (Was on for a podium for a while, before the world champion contenders decided to drive fast again. Did all he could. Drove a similar race to Stroll, but with a worse car. P7 is a great result for him)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 6/10 (He was fast. And then he turned into a wall. Did he assume he would have less grip? I guess so. A silly mistake to end his race)
Jolyon Palmer – 4/10 (Did he compete today? Really? Started at the back, retired early on. It's too late to shine now, he must be replaced)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 7/10 (Ran P10 for much of the race but was slow with old tyres near the end. Had to let Wehrlein past to secure a point. Did so. Could not challenge the midfield today)
Pascal Wehrlein – 7/10 (Ran P11 for much of the race but was faster with fresher tyres near the end. Had to pass Ericsson to secure a point. Did so. Could not challenge the midfield today)

Baku:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Headrest cost him the race.
Val - 7 - Hit Kimi; race saved by safety cars.

Red Bull
Dan - 9 - Won by dint of main rivals falling by the wayside, slower than Max all weekend.
Max - 9 - Ahead of Dan all weekend, let down once again by his car....

Ferrari:
Seb - 3 - Good drive except that he deliberately drove into Ham... damn lucky to escape a race ban.
Kimi - 8 - Hit by Bottas, race stuffed.

Force India:
Perez - 9 - Would've expected a haul of points given difficulties suffered by the top teams, instead teamy pushed him into a wall.
Ocon - 4 - Stupid to squeeze someone so hard, elevating to moronic when it's your team-'mate'.

Williams
Baby - 9 - What could've been....
Stroll - 9 - Kept it all together in a race full of incidents - seems calmer at wheel after Canada result.

McHonda
Alonso - 9 - Okay, so he needed multiple retirements to scrape into ninth, but blame the engine for that not the man.
Van Door - 5 - And five might be generous... must be my lowest ranked driver this season.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 7 - Hilarious spin at turn 1, solid drive after that.
Kvyat - 6 - Early retirement.

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - Performances this year surely killed any prospect of moving to a bigger team.
Son of Magnus - 9 - Very good.

Renault:
Hulk - 5 - Whoops.
Palmer - X - Car died in quali and in the race.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 7 - Let Wehrlein past to safeguard point lest Van Door caught them.
Blaise - 7 - Was let past by Eric's son to safeguard point for team.

Van Door - 5 - And five might be generous... must be my lowest ranked driver this season.

Well, let's find out! Your top 3 ranked are:

1: Sebastian Vettel (avg. 8.375)
2: Fernando Alonso (8.167)
3: Max Verstappen (8.000)

Your bottom 3 ranked are:

1: Jolyon Palmer (avg. 3.714)
2: Stoffel Vandoorne (4.571)
3: Lance Stroll (5.125)

Button is 3.000 for you but since he was only there for a race, I am excluding him. Stroll is third worst despite scoring 9 in Baku. Vettel is best despite scoring 3 in Baku. Before Baku, Vettel's average was 9.143 from you, courtesy of 10 points in Australia and solid 9s through all other races.

For me, this is the top 3:

1: Sebastian Vettel (8.143)
2: Fernando Alonso (8.000)
3: Felipe Massa (7.714)

Bottom 3:

1: Jolyon Palmer (3.857)
2: Stoffel Vandoorne (4.667)
3: Lance Stroll (5.143)

We put 5/6 drivers in the same spot. You ranked Verstappen third, I rank him as far down as 12th best this season. I rank Felipe Massa 3rd, you rank Massa 7th.

Other stats standing out:
Lewis is your sixth best, my 13th best. That's about it. The rest are very close to each other.

Austrian GP, Red Bull Ring. Österreichring. A1-Ring. Whatever.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 6/10 (Only qualified 3rd, behind his team mate and Vettel. Started 8th and barely passed Raikkonen before failing to catch Ricciardo. Not very good.)
Valtteri Bottas – 10/10 (The drive itself wasn't 10/10 but that start was. He moved before the red lights, but only so little that the jump start trigger never did trigger. 9/10 for race, +1 for start. Could EASILY have been a jump start, but he got it perfectly right)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 9/10 (In a way a better race than in Baku. He kept one Ferrari and one Mercedes behind him. Well deserved podium)
Max Verstappen – X/10

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 8/10 (Couldn't quite keep up with Bottas today. Still increased his gap to Hamilton so it's all good)
Kimi Räikkönen – 6/10 (Not good enough, Kimi. Time to step up)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 8/10 (Recovers from Baku debacle with a good solid P7)
Esteban Ocon – 7/10 (Recovers from Baku debacle with a good solid P8. Just a tad slower than Perez)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 9/10 (Well, the Williams was awful on Saturday. P17 in quali. HE SCORED POINTS ANYWAY. That's my man!)
Lance Stroll – 9/10 (Well, the Will.. yeah, see above. P18 to P10 is very solid)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – X/10 (aww nuts)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 6/10 (Well he made it to the end, but that was uneventful. Kept an ailing Hulk behind him so that's nice)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 7/10 (Ran solidly in points before car failure. Poor boy)
Daniil Kvyat – 1/10 (Never have I ever rated someone 1/10. I think. But Kvyat should not be allowed to race in the first corner. He should enter the race at T2. Dangerous)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 10/10 (Here's a 10/10. Managed to use his brakes this weekend, and it gave him P6 and a healthy load of points. Great stuff from the Frenchman, and suddenly he's an option for Ferrari again)
Kevin Magnussen – 8/10 (Darnit. My third driver this week. Looked so strong in practice, broke down in quali, broke down again in race. Damn)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 6/10 (His car was arguing with him throughout the entire race. Could not show what he was capable of)
Jolyon Palmer – 7/10 (Actually came close to scoring points today. Still didn't do it, though)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 6/10 (That Sauber car is just.. slow. It's so slow. Painful)
Pascal Wehrlein – 7/10 (This Sauber car is also.. slow. It was a teensy bit faster than the other one though. Thus one point higher)

Driver of the weekend, Grosjean.

Why did I think Toffee Van Door could be my lowest rated driver... of course it's going to be Palmer.  Silly me.

So we're quite similar in scoring except that Max & Hammy are not feeling the love from you this season.  Let's see if this trend continues with Austria... but not today, for I shall post them instead after the sun has risen once more.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers

Austria:

Merc:
Hammy - 6 - Mediocre.
Val - 9 - Pole position, superb start (0.2 sec reaction time) and no mistakes in race; but also Merc. was quickest car & no battling for position hence not a ten.

Red Bull
Dan - 9 - Qualified ahead of Max, faultless race, held off Hammy - tempted to award a ten.
Max - X - Kvyatted.

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - A few more laps and I reckon he could've had Bottas.
Kimi - 6 - That was slow.  Again.

Force India:
Perez - 8 - Solid.
Ocon - 7 - Solid but just a tad slower.

Williams
Baby - 8 - Great first lap to take advantage of carnage.
Stroll - 8 - Great first lap to take advantage of carnage.

McHonda
Alonso - X - See Max.
Van Door - 5 - And five might be generous... will soon be my lowest ranked driver if he doesn't improve.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 7 - Good.
Kvyat - 0 - Horrific.  The more stupid crashes you have the more points you lose... and he has had many these past two seasons.

Haas:
Big Jean - 10 - What a way to bounce back.  That's the Grosjean of old (last year).
Son of Magnus - 8 - Was fast when the car was working... which wasn't for long enough.

Renault:
Hulk - 5 - Unusually slow.
Palmer - 7 - Unusually fast... or at least not embarrassingly slow.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 6 - Wow, those Saubers were slow.  As that other chap said, painful to watch - probably worse to drive.
Blaise - 7 - Marginally less slow than the other blue car.

Forgot to do Silverstone!  Now I can barely remember the race... skip it and move straight to Hungary?
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on July 31, 2017, 02:37:03 AM
Oh my. I forgot Silverstone too. How silly. I shall return for the Grey rock of Silvery stones later.

HUNGARORING it is, then.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 7/10 (Decent showing, but he was never much better than fourth fastest. +1 for letting Bottas pass at the end)
Valtteri Bottas – 7/10 (Yes he finished ahead of Hamilton after qualifying ahead of him. He never could bring it to Ferrari)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – X/10 (Well)
Max Verstappen – 3/10 (Well...... Don't crash your team mate)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 7/10 (How do you win so unconvincingly? He won from pole position. He secured pole. Then won the race. Still only 7/10)
Kimi Räikkönen – 8/10 (Should have attacked Vettel, but then again he knows he is to finish P2 behind the German. Did all we can expect)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 8/10 (Fought his way back from a lowly 13th on the grid to a points position. Good)
Esteban Ocon – 7/10 (Just like his team mate, only from 11th on the grid. Not AS good, still pretty good)

Williams:
Paul di Resta – 7/10 (Well yes. He had never driven the car. Yes, he was only 7 tenths, I think, behind Stroll. Still, higher than 7 would require him to match Stroll in the race. He was running behind Sauber)
Lance Stroll – 6/10 (Is the Williams car suddenly this bad, or has Stroll fallen back

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 10/10 (It has to be. It cannot be anything else. P6 and fastest lap? I mean come on!)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 8/10 (First points of the season. Quite decent. And impressive quali too. Still, you are not keeping up with your Alonso)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 8/10 (P7 is a decent points haul, he finished more or less where he started after battling it out with Alonso for a long time)
Daniil Kvyat – 6/10 (Mediocre at best. At least he only got one penalty point this weekend. That's an improvement)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 6/10 (Wasn't going too well, and then he retired. Like the Russian above him, mediocre at best)
Kevin Magnussen – 5/10 (In truth a pretty poor showing. Giving a bonus point for his reply to the Hulk. "Suck my balls, honey". That's gold)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 7/10 (Wasn't having a great weekend, then got pushed wide by KMag and praised the Dane for "most unsporting driver". Again. Good fun)
Jolyon Palmer – 5/10 (I hope this was his last race in F1. I hope Kubica is ready to replace him mid-season. I hope he is gone)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 5/10 (Tried to do 66 laps on a set of softs. Got about 55 before they fell off the famous cliff. Wehrlein then ate him. He pitted from last, slapped on supersofts, and lapped some 4-5 seconds faster than Wehrlein. Didn't catch him.)
Pascal Wehrlein – 7/10 (Was quite simply the better Sauber driver here. Again.)
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on July 31, 2017, 08:37:48 AM
OK. SILVERSTONE! Will draw from memory, so no detailed explanation to the ratings.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 10/10
Valtteri Bottas – 9/10

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 9/10
Max Verstappen – 7/10

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 8/10
Kimi Räikkönen – 8/10

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 6/10
Esteban Ocon – 7/10

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 8/10
Lance Stroll – 5/10

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 7/10
Stoffel Vandoorne – 8/10

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – X/10
Daniil Kvyat – 2/10

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 6/10
Kevin Magnussen – 7/10

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 9/10
Jolyon Palmer – X/10

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 9/10
Pascal Wehrlein – 5/10

Ericsson finished P14, ahead of a Toro Rosso, a Williams, and his team mate. Very strong. Would have been Driver of the race had it not been for an amazing Lewis Hamilton.

Will be back to do this later today....

And I'm back.

Hungary:

Merc:
Hammy - 7 - Out-qualified by Bottas but bested him in the race.
Val - 6 - Out-raced by Hammy but bested him in qualifying - Sunday's efforts worth more than Saturday's.

Red Bull
Dan - X - Not a happy camper....
Max - 4 - Thou shalt not hit thy team-mate; that aside, man had a good race.

Ferrari:
Seb - 8 - Car was wonky from start of race so credit for bringing it home in first.
Kimi - 9 - Which in no small part was thanks to Mr. Raikkonen, the proud recipient of 2017's 'Rear Gunner of the Year' award.

Force India:
Perez - 8 - Not the greatest track for Force India but a strong showing by both drivers.
Ocon - 8 - Hence they both secure a magnificent eight points.

Williams
Great Scott - 6 - How to score when he leaps in on such short notice?  Certainly a solid effort.
Stroll - 5 - The Williams did not enjoy this track - seems to be a lot of that lately.

McHonda
Alonso - 10 - Of course.  How could you not?  Sublime.
Van Door - 7 - Improving and would've been an 'eighter' but for his pit-lane blunder.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 9 - That was as high as the car could go.
Kvyat - 6 - Still racing?  Drove around, didn't hit anyone... so, better than normal.

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - Nothing to write home about.
Son of Magnus - 5 - Ditto.

Renault:
Hulk - 7 - Miles faster than Palmer.
Palmer - 4 - Miles slower than most of the field.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 5 - Lost track of what the hell was happening with the Sauber boys...
Blaise - 6 - ... but +1 to Pascal for finishing marginally ahead in quali & race.

I might even take a stab at some Silverstone scoring tomorrow.

Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers

Let us rate the Belgian Grand Prix. It was held in Belgium, on the Belgian track Spa-Francorchamps located in the Belgian commune of Francorchamps which forms part of Stavelot, a Belgian municipality in the Belgian province of Liège, a province in Belgium where the Belgian Grand Prix is held. The most popular Belgian driver currently in F1 is Max Verstappen from Belgium who isn't Belgian but is Dutch which borders Belgium.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 10/10 (Could do nothing more than this. His ability to keep Vettel behind him at the SC restart was nothing short of great, even admitting to lifting to bring Vettel close at an inconvenient point for the German. Neat stuff. 200 GPs, matching Schumacher's 68 poles)
Valtteri Bottas – 6/10 (A bit better than mediocre, but not much. His car is capable of more than P5 especially when his fellow Finn accelerates past waved yellows)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 9/10 (He should not have made the podium here. His car was not up for it. Still, he did)
Max Verstappen – 7/10 (Decent getaway but cannot catch a break. Poor kid. Deserves to finish a race or two)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 9/10 (So close to a 10, but should have been able to force himself past Hamilton for it. Still, great stuff hauling a Ferrari to P2 when it was not as fast as the Silver Arrows)
Kimi Räikkönen – 5/10 (With all the talk of slowing over double waved yellows, he simply cannot comprehend why he was penalised. Rules are rules, they don't apply differently on straights. For all we know, a volunteer could have stumbled massively and fallen on track. I mean, not likely but still)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 4/10 (Crashed his team mate twice. Ugly)
Esteban Ocon – 8/10 (Could have avoided the second crash for sure, but had every right to position himself there. Can't be held responsible for the second crash. Still finished in the points)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 9/10 (How does he do it? I didn't see him all race and suddenly he finishes 8 places higher than where he started? Nice stuff really)
Lance Stroll – 7/10 (Battled it out with Toro Rosso through much of the race. Actually didn't do too badly, even though he was awarded 0 points at the end)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 8/10 (Great start, up running in P7. Then retired an "unhealthy" car which most likely was so shit Alonso interpreted it as broken. Was overtaken once per straight)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 6/10 (Beat one Haas courtesy of Magnussen forgetting to slow down for the hairpin. Beat one Sauber courtesy of the Sauber being a useless piece of sh*t. In a way I count him as finishing last)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 7/10 (Decent enough, securing points on a track where Toro Rosso isn't all that strong. Also kept beating his Russian friend which is to be expected)
Daniil Kvyat – 4/10 (The only good thing we can say here is that he completed an entire race without being penalised. Good for him)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 9/10 (Finished higher than his car should let him. Actually second best of the rest behind the Hulk. Clean driving throughout)
Kevin Magnussen – 4/10 (When your team mate finishes in P7, and you finish 16th of 17 runners there is no excuse. Poor race)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 10/10 (Some sweet overtaking, some great racing. Deserves to finish best of the rest yet again)
Jolyon Palmer – 6/10 (This guy. Retires from quali, left starting way back. Technically went backwards in the race since several drivers ahead of him DNFed. Extra point awarded for a sweet battle with Alonso, I believe it was)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 8/10 (Can't do much more than this on Spa. Losing 2 seconds in the first sector alone, Ericsson finishing this close to other cars is remarkable in its own right. I can't help but feel this weekend was a turnaround, he beat Wehrlein by 0.4 seconds in quali and left the German way behind him at the start)
Pascal Wehrlein – X/10 (DNFed after technical errors. Can't really rate him since he raced for so short)

Driver of the week? I've got to hand it to Hamilton, but the Hulk is a strong second.

I must score last Sunday's race.  I think it was in Belgium.

Back later.

Some time later....

Belgium:

Merc:
Hammy - 10 - Has to be.  Didn't put a foot wrong.
Val - 6 - Tempted to award just a five, but as you said he was a bit better than mediocre.  But only a bit.

Red Bull
Dan - 8 - Good in race but not even close to his team-mate in qualifying.
Max - 8 - Comfortably ahead of Dan in quali, car died (again) in race.

Ferrari:
Seb - 10 - Couldn't out-drag Hammy's 'trimmed for speed' Merc, but a flawless weekend from the Seb.
Kimi - 6 - Off Vettel's pace and chose to ignore those pesky yellow flags.  What a great idea.

Force India:
Perez - 0 - That's for squeezing Ocon towards a wall.  Stupid and dangerous.  Personally I'd ban him for a race in the hope he might realise he was in the wrong.
Ocon - 8 - Tried to abort the pass on Perez when he saw the squeeze coming; at least that left us with front-wing slicing rear tyre, rather than some potentially horrible wheel-on-wheel, car goes flying scenario.

Williams
Baby - 8 - Sneaked a few points which was more than the car deserved.
Stroll - 7 - Solid showing.  Closing the gap to Felipe.

McHonda
Alonso - 7 - Insanely slow in a straight line, no chance to hold a decent position.
Van Door - 5 - Mediocre.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 7 - Ahead of the cars you'd expect given track characteristics.
Kvyat - 6 - Ahead of most of the cars you'd expect given track characteristics.

Haas:
Big Jean - 9 - One of his 'on' races... followed by an 'off' one at Monza.
Son of Magnus - 4 - Semi-permanently in the 'off' position.

Renault:
Hulk - 9 - What we've come to expect.  Thumbs up to the Renault guys for hiring him.
Palmer - 5 - So good in practice and quali (until car died); hit by grid penalty but then lacking pace on Sunday.  Doubly disappointing as he was my weekly pick.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 7 - Slow car but out-qualified the former next big thing Pascal Wehrlein by a decent margin.

Italy was a snorefest, but ratings are required.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 7/10 (Never had to push. At all.)
Valtteri Bottas – 7/10 (See above)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 10/10 (Qualified well, demoted on grid, made it back up to P4. NEAT!)
Max Verstappen – 7/10 (Not as neat, but still not bad)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 6/10 (Sorry, but the distance to Mercedes was not good enough)
Kimi Räikkönen – 4/10 (Like Vettel, only even worse)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 6/10 (Scored points. That is all)
Esteban Ocon – 8/10 (Immense qualifying session, decent race. P6 was as good as he could achieve)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 6/10 (Decent battles with drivers around him, almost caught the Strollster too. Nice)
Lance Stroll – 7/10 (P2 on grid. Well deserved. Race did not live up to his qualifying promise, but still not bad)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 6/10 (A bit disappointed with his moaning about Palmer here. I mean, it's fun, but focus on the task at hand)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 8/10 (Was better than his double world champion team mate this weekend. Sad to see them both retiring)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 5/10 (Pretty invisible this weekend. Hard to rate.)
Daniil Kvyat – 6/10 (See above, but higher up in the result)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 4/10 (Fairly weak showing, struggling to match even the Saubers at times)
Kevin Magnussen – 7/10 (Better than RoGro for sure. Just missed out on points after a late dive from Verstappen)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 6/10 (Renaults nowhere to be found at Monza. Did what he could, but what he could was not what he needed to do)
Jolyon Palmer – 5/10 (Still paler than Hulkenberg, but not by much)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 7/10 (Ran well until Wehrlein ran into him. Retired an ailing car a bit later)
Pascal Wehrlein – 4/10 (Noooo. Never crash your team mate, silly man. Have you been to the Force India school of team spirit?)

Italy:

Merc:
Hammy - 8 - Easy victory.
Val - 7 - Easy second place.

Red Bull
Dan - 9 - Strong quali, super drive through the field after penalty.
Max - 7 - Even stronger quali, incredible gains through field until overly-optimistic move on Massa - can't always jump at first opportunity to pass.

Ferrari:
Seb - 8 - Car well off Merc pace so third was best on offer.
Kimi - 6 - Twenty four seconds behind Seb.

Force India:
Perez - 7 - Good but couldn't rival his upstart team-mate.
Ocon - 9 - Superb qualifying and faultless race.

Williams
Baby - 6 - Beaten by Lance on pace for the first time (I think).
Stroll - 8 - Youngest ever to start from front row of F1 grid.  Not bad.  Damaged tyres after pit stop which affected handling and killed any chance of attacking Ocon.

McHonda - Mystery as to why they're ditching Honda!
Alonso - 6 - DNF.  Not a stellar showing from The Man but then probably went into Monza thinking "this will be shit" - or the Spanish equivalent.
Van Door - 7 - DNF.  Reasonable showing.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 5 - He was in the race?  Really?
Kvyat - 6 - Umm... he didn't hit anyone and finished ahead of Sainz.  It doesn't get any better for Daniil.

Haas:
Big Jean - 4 - A poor effort... so should manage a decent one in Singapore.
Son of Magnus - 7 - Good position for the car, shame he lost out on tenth.

Renault:
Hulk - 6 - Not a Renault track, expecting better this weekend.
Palmer - 5 - Not a Renault track, not necessarily expecting better this weekend.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 6 - Once again out-qualified the former 'next big thing' Pascal Wehrlein, though not by much this time.
Blaise - 3 - Don't hit team-mate.

LET US GO TO A WET NIGHT RACE IN LE SINGAPORE

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 10/10 (Fuck this guy. He's good. He's gooooood.)
Valtteri Bottas – 7/10 (Finished P3 by default really)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 9/10 (Nursed an ailing car with a failing gearbox to P2. Hello!)
Max Verstappen – X/10 (Not carrying blame for start crash)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 3/10 (Carrying blame for start crash)
Kimi Räikkönen – X/10 (Not carrying blame for start crash)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 9/10 (From 12th on the grid to P5. Sure he gained 4 positions in first corner carnage, but that's irrelevant because he fought his way and kept his cool. NEAT!)
Esteban Ocon – 6/10 (Looked good at the start but dropped back. Fatigue, maybe? Still salvaged points)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 4/10 (No. We can pretend Sauber doesn't exist because Pascal was so disgustingly off-pace. Massa ran behind Marcus Ericsson for most of the race. Rain is not his forté)
Lance Stroll – 8/10 (Much better. P18 to P8 in a messy race. Somehow, Lance Stroll is at his best when the races are difficult. Baku, Singapore, Monza quali? Good stuff. Impressing me)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – X/10 (Not carrying blame for start crash, obviously)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 7/10 (Very solid points for his McLaren team, P7 is good even when considering the number of retirements here)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 10/10 (Boomchackalacka, or whatever they said. P4, from tenth on the grid. Held Pérez behind him so well. Great race for the Renault man)
Daniil Kvyat – 4/10 (How Kvyatesque of him, crashing out in an overambitious display of speed)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 7/10 (Well. He finished in the points. We can ask of no more in a race like this. Very acceptable)
Kevin Magnussen – 7/10 (Well. He didn't finish. His engine went kaput. Before that, though, he was running in the points. We can ask of no more in a race like this. Very acceptable)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 9/10 (So sad to see a P4 slip away due to hydraulic issues, or whatever it was. He pitted for a minute while they filled up some fluid by the engine. Clearly hampered, ended up retiring. Was looking so good!)
Jolyon Palmer – 9/10 (How? It's a P6 for Palmer, his first points of the year and he salvages 8 of them. Very good, kept his cool, kept it together. Good stuff. Made a case for himself to keep the drive for the rest of 2017)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 6/10 (Deducting 2 points for that silly spin near the end of the race. Embarrassing. Still, ate Wehrlein for breakfast here)
Pascal Wehrlein – 5/10 (So very off-pace, oh boy. Even when Sauber put Marcus on softs, and Marcus lapped 8-10 seconds too slow for 5 laps, Wehrlein was over a pit stop down)

Driver of the race? Damn. It's Lewis, isn't it? Yup. Argh.

OK, so even though you have not yet rated Singapore it is time for me to post some stats.

Chrill's top 5:
Driver - Avg. Rating - Best score
Daniel Ricciardo - 8.167 - 2x10
Fernando Alonso - 7.889 - 2x10
Nico Hülkenberg - 7.692 - 1x10
Sebastian Vettel - 7.538 - 1x10
Lewis Hamilton - 7.462 - 4x10

Penfold's top 5:
Driver - Avg. Rating - Best score
Sebastian Vettel - 8.385 - 2x10
Fernando Alonso - 7.800 - 2x10
Lewis Hamilton - 7.769 - 3x10
Daniel Ricciardo - 7.583 - 4x9
Max Verstappen - 7.545 - 1x10

These are our leading men for every team:

Chrill
Team - Driver - Rating - Difference to team mate
Mercedes - Lewis Hamilton - 7.462 - (+0.077)
Red Bull - Daniel Ricciardo - 8.167 - (+1.667)
Ferrari - Sebastian Vettel - 7.538 - (+0.902)
Force India - Sergio Perez - 7.231 - (+0.154)
Williams - Felipe Massa - 7.077 - (+1.077)
McLaren - Fernando Alonso - 7.889 - (+1.972)
Toro Rosso - Carlos Sainz, Jr. - 7.250 - (+2.327)
Haas - Romain Grosjean - 6.538 - (+0.538)
Renault - Nico Hülkenberg - 7.692 - (+2.776)
Sauber - Marcus Ericsson - 6.615 - (+0.115)

Penfold
Team - Driver - Rating - Difference to team mate
Mercedes - Lewis Hamilton - 7.769 - (+0.769)
Red Bull - Daniel Ricciardo - 7.583 - (+0.038)
Ferrari - Sebastian Vettel - 8.385 - (+1.635)
Force India - Esteban Ocon - 7.308 - (+0.231)
Williams - Felipe Massa - 7.364 - (+1.671)
McLaren - Fernando Alonso - 7.800 - (+2.550)
Toro Rosso - Carlos Sainz, Jr. - 6.833 - (+1.372)
Haas - Romain Grosjean - 6.385 - (+0.538)
Renault - Nico Hülkenberg - 7.538 - (+3.266)
Sauber - Marcus Ericsson - 6.385 - (+0.085)

So yes. We both claim Ericsson to have had a better season than Wehrlein despite a 5-0 points advantage to the German. The margins are small.

We agree on every driver except Force India, but once again margins are indeed small.

With my newfound experience of Google Spreadsheets and similar, I shall make some more numbers. I shall then present them. Numbers such as which driver we most strongly disagree about.

It appears that Vettel is on pace to win both Penfold's "driver of the year" and "idiot of the year" awards.

More stats. WOO!

Max Verstappen 1.045
Sebastian Vettel 0.846
Stoffel Vandoorne 0.667
Jolyon Palmer 0.644
Daniel Ricciardo 0.583
Daniil Kvyat 0.538
Carlos Sainz, Jr. 0.417
Valtteri Bottas 0.385
Lewis Hamilton 0.308
Lance Stroll 0.308
Esteban Ocon 0.231
Marcus Ericsson 0.231
Pascal Wehrlein 0.200
Sergio Perez 0.154
Kevin Magnussen 0.154
Nico Hülkenberg 0.154
Romain Grosjean 0.154
Felipe Massa 0.136
Kimi Räikkönen 0.114
Fernando Alonso 0.089

Put simply, this is the difference between any two drivers. This doesn't look at who rates which driver higher, it just shows the difference between our two ratings. Spending time at work figuring this out, because I need to know Excel at work anyway so I consider this educational  8)

His Singapore score will drag him down, as did his Baku efforts, but the other twelve races thus far have been quality.  Anyway, I told you that Kvyat has pretty much got the 2017 'idiot' prize in the bag.

I shall now score Singapore and render Chrill's averages obsolete:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Great drive in tricky conditions but Vettel obliterated any competition for the win.
Val - 6 - Miles off Hammy's pace..

Red Bull
Dan - 8 - Strong result with iffy gearbox but didn't exactly have to fight for it.
Max - X - Seb's biggest fan.

Ferrari:
Seb - 2 - What a dim-witted move.
Kimi - X - Seb's second biggest fan.

Force India:
Perez - 8 - One of many to gain a bunch of places courtesy of Seb; still a v. good drive but position is flattered.
Ocon - 5 - Shouldn't be finishing behind a Haas.

Williams
Baby - 4 - Beaten by Lance once more.  In danger of becoming a habit.
Stroll - 8 - So much more comfortable in the car than in the first part of the year, good to see.

McHonda
Alonso - X - Yet another casuality of Seb's recklessness.  Surely top 4 was a cert and perhaps he could've even had Bottas.
Van Door - 7 - Solid.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 9 - Best of the rest thanks to Hulk's retirement.
Kvyat - 4 - Good grief, he crashed his car... I almost can't believe it.

Haas:
Big Jean - 8 - Car didn't look fantastic but brought it home ahead of a Force India & a Willimas (and was running ahead of team-mate).
Son of Magnus - 7 - Just a tad off Romain.

Renault:
Hulk - 9 - Best of the rest until his retirement.
Palmer - 8 - Talk about driving for your career....

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 5 - Points off for crash.
Blaise - 4 - Points off for being slow.

Don't worry. All I need is to enter the digits and Google Spreadsheets do the calculations for me!

So, with Singapore in mind, THIS HAPPENED:

You no longer claim Ocon to be better than Perez. The difference between them is now 0.000. They both have a total score of 100 points this season.

This is now the difference between us two!

Driver Difference Highest rating
Max Verstappen 1.045 7.857
Daniel Ricciardo 0.551 7.929
Stoffel Vandoorne 0.532 8.167
Valtteri Bottas 0.456 7.143
Daniil Kvyat 0.434 6.750
Felipe Massa 0.417 4.917
Pascal Wehrlein 0.409 7.250
Lewis Hamilton 0.396 7.500
Sebastian Vettel 0.390 7.385
Jolyon Palmer 0.333 7.545
Marcus Ericsson 0.330 5.917
Carlos Sainz, Jr. 0.250 7.231
Lance Stroll 0.143 6.000
Kimi Räikkönen 0.114 6.615
Fernando Alonso 0.089 6.500
Sergio Perez 0.088 5.357
Kevin Magnussen 0.071 6.538
Esteban Ocon 0.066 7.889
Nico Hülkenberg 0.049 6.000
Romain Grosjean 0.038 7.692

I would go for Vettel over Kvyat. It's not that Kvyat has driven better than Vettel or made less mistakes, he hasn't. But Vettel has likely thrown away a chance at a championship, while Kvyat apparently won't even lose his job.

That is a good point - consequences of stupidity rather than sheer volume.  So maybe Seb will deserve both the 'biggest idiot' & 'best driver' awards.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers

MaMaMaMaMalaysia.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 7/10 (Solid 2nd place finish from a great pole position. Can't be much more than 7/10 when dropping compared to your grid position)
Valtteri Bottas – 4/10 (Really really poor. Like very poor. He only just edged Perez in the end. Perez, sick with a stomach bug)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 8/10 (Made the podium thanks to fending off a very hungry German in a red car. Nice defending, decent drive)
Max Verstappen – 9/10 (Well, he won his second race in rather dominant fashion. He passed Hamilton on track. Still, it's not enough for me to call it 10/10)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 10/10 (This is why Verstappen can't be a 10/10. Vettel. Wow. P4 is not a bad comeback. Definitely had by far the best car today. Would have finished half a minute ahead of Verstappen had he started where he should have)
Kimi Räikkönen – X/10 (So upsetting. With Vettel out of the equation, we really needed to hear the Finnish anthem today. We would have, had he simply managed to race)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 10/10 (He was afraid he couldn't even complete the race due to exhaustion. Instead he finished P6 and best of the rest, the only driver from the midfield to not be lapped)
Esteban Ocon – 6/10 (I mean, points scored is never bad but P10 was not enough)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 7/10 (With a damaged car after being part of a pink Force India sandwich at the start, he still followed his young friend across the line)
Lance Stroll – 7/10 (With a non-damaged car, he managed to pass his old friend and beat him to the line)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 5/10 (Really quite poor. Is he simply giving up on 2017?)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 9/10 (Really very good. He has dominated the old Spaniard in these last two races. Sign of things to come?)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr – 6/10 (Ran decently until he retired with an engine failure)
Pierre Gasly – 7/10 (Acceptable debut, not far behind his more experienced team mate. Replacing Kvyat? Good call)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 5/10 (Fairly mediocre. nuff said)
Kevin Magnussen – 6/10 (A tiny bit less mediocre, still pretty mediocre)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – 5/10 (Not good! Strategy ended up poorly, and had to pit near the very end which shunted him far down the order)
Jolyon Palmer – 5/10 (Also not good! Can't blame strategy though, he was simply poor)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 4/10 (Definitely destroyed by his team mate this weekend. Half a second in quali, basically the same over the entire race)
Pascal Wehrlein – 8/10 (Can really do nothing more with his Sauber. Had a good weekend considering his equipment)

Obviously Vettel is my driver of the race. Good stuff.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers

Malaysia:

Merc:
Hammy - 8 - Fortunate with Ferrari woes, but great pole and strong drive for second.
Val - 4 - Way, way off Hammy all weekend.

Red Bull
Dan - 8 - Nice bit of defensive driving at end.  Nice enough driving the rest of the time, too.
Max - 10 - Torn between awarding full marks or 'only' a 9, guess I'm feeling a little generous today.

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - Strong recovery albeit in best car and with much of the midfield pitting themselves out of Seb's way.
Kimi - X - Bollocks.

Force India:
Perez - 10 - Bumped to a 10 for battling through illness.
Ocon - 7 - Got squeezed onto Massa at race start which meant early pit stop, could've still come 7th but for a clash with Sainz.

Williams
Baby - 7 - Can't be bothered to explain.
Stroll - 7 - See above.

McHonda
Alonso - 6 - Too long on first set of tyres, not sure why he or the team thought this a good idea.
Van Door - 10 - Didn't put a foot wrong.  Hope he continues in this vein.

Toro Rosso:
Sainz - 5 - One point deduction for clipping Ocon.
Gasly - 6 - Good effort.  He probably finished roughly where Kvyat would've, although there's a 1 in 3 chance the Russian would've crashed.

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - Barely noticed him.
Son of Magnus - 6 - Enjoyed the tussle with Alonso.

Renault:
Hulk - 6 - Terrible strategy and the car didn't look much better.
Palmer - 4 - Spun by the wind?  Slower than the Hulk, obviously.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 4 - Poor showing in quali and race.
Blaise - 7 - Decent showing in both.

Thank you.

I am VERY proud to announce my ability to create rules and formulas in Google Spreadsheets. So much so that I have created THIS:

Driver Diff. Highest Who rates them higher?
Max Verstappen 1.023 7.750 Penfold
Pierre Gasly 1.000 7.000 Chrill
D. Ricciardo 0.511 8.154 Chrill
Pascal Wehrlein 0.470 6.636 Chrill
S. Vandoorne 0.440 6.154 Chrill
Lewis Hamilton 0.438 7.867 Penfold
Daniil Kvyat 0.434 5.357 Penfold
Valtteri Bottas 0.410 7.143 Chrill
Felipe Massa 0.385 7.462 Chrill
Jolyon Palmer 0.385 4.923 Chrill
C. Sainz, Jr. 0.297 7.154 Chrill
Marcus Ericsson 0.295 6.429 Chrill
S. Vettel 0.286 8.000 Penfold
Lance Stroll 0.138 6.071 Chrill

Romain Grosjean 0.029 6.429 Chrill

Whenever I fill in your digits, it will automatically calculate their total score, their average score, their score in relation to their team mate. It will also calculate the above, that is the difference between your score and mine, their highest rating, and which one of us provided that highest rating.

This is the code:
=IFS(C2 = Penfold!W5,"Penfold", C2 = Chrill!W5,"Chrill", TRUE,"No match found")
It's simple. If field C2 (highest rating) matches you, make it say so. If it matches me, make it say so. If none of those are true, it will look at the third option which is always true and return "No match found".

YES THIS IS RELEVANT TO MY WORK. I'm actually learning Spreadsheets right now and this is genuinely relevant to me, it's good practice.

Gets two thunbs up, or even thumbs up, from me.  Can't beat a good bit of solid data - although person inputting might want to take more care: I gave Gasly 6/10 not 8/10.

Japan.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 (Controlled the race perfectly. Did what he had to do)
Valtteri Bottas - 6/10 (It's really not good enough. At least he kept Daniel close)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (Couldn't challenge his team mate here)
Max Verstappen - 9/10 (At one point looked able to challenge Hamilton. In the end, P2 was a good result)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - X/10 (Stupid Ferrari engine failures. This is annoying)
Kimi R?ikk?nen - 7/10 (Drove an acceptable race from P10 but should've stayed closer to Bottas)

Force India:
Sergio Perez - 6/10 (Finished behind his team mate after qualifying behind)
Esteban Ocon - 8/10 (Finished ahead of his team mate after qualifying ahead)

Williams:
Felipe Massa - 5/10 (A point. Just. Started P8 and dropped back)
Lance Stroll - 6/10 (Well. He retired. Before that, looked stronger than his friend Massa)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10 (Outside points, did what he could, but never had the top speed)
Stoffel Vandoorne - 7/10 (Back to mediocre for the Belgian. Couldn't challenge today, although qualified really well)

Toro Rosso:
Carlos Sainz Jr - 4/10 (Crashed at the start by his own fault)
Pierre Gasly - 6/10 (Finished ahead of a McLaren and a Sauber. Second race, so more is to come)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean - 7/10 (Some decent points, but rather anonymous race)
Kevin Magnussen - 8/10 (Like Grosjean, bonus point for his brutal overtake of Massa. Neat stuff)

Renault:
Nico H?lkenberg - 7/10 (Was running OK before retiring with an open DRS wing. Unlucky)
Jolyon Palmer - 5/10 (Very unspectacular race)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson - 6/10 (Kept both McLarens behind him. Then forgot that Degner is a difficult corner and his car is shit, and so went too fast. Deducting 2 points for crash, still giving him 6)
Pascal Wehrlein - 4/10 (Very far behind Ericsson, and ran 30 seconds behind him after a really weird pit strategy he ordered himself)

Driver of the race? Uh.... Hamilton? Verstappen?

Also COLOUR CODING OF THE MF1 DRIVER RATINGS GOOGLE SPREADSHEETS DOCUMENT. Penfold is yellow, Chrill is green, and if none of us is true then it's all blue.

This was required because when entering Perez's results for Japan, we both ended up rating him at exactly 7.333 but the document claimed you rated him higher because the formula looks for you first. I've changed it now, so whenever the difference is 0.000, it will say Both. Whenever it isn't, it will then look to who rates the driver highest. YAY FOR ME.

Max - 9 -

Ferrari:
Seb - X - Bugger.
Kimi - 7 -

Big Jean - 8 -
Son of Magnus - 9 -

Renault:
Hulk - 7 -
Palmer - 6 -

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 5 - Points off for crash but he was still better than Pascal.
Blaise - 4 - I bet Force India is gutted they have Ocon rather than this guy.

Seems likely Palmer grabs the 2017 wooden spoon in my standings, but he's neck-and-neck with Kvyat in yours.

The Circuit of the Americas, the Grand Prix of USA!

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton – 9/10 (Lost the start, then drove amazingly and recovered easily)
Valtteri Bottas – 5/10 (Not good enough. Come on, Bottman)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo – 8/10 (Was really giving Ferrari and Bottas a run for it before being let down by MACHINERY)
Max Verstappen – 10/10 (Well, P16 to P4 is simply very good. His overtake on Raikkonen was correctly deemed illegal, but I still give a +1 for it)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel – 8/10 (Won the start, ran an alternative strategy. Simply not capable of more today)
Kimi Räikkönen – 7/10 (Definitely gave Vettel a run for it here, probably would have finished ahead had it not been near the end of season with Vettel technically still in it)

Force India:
Sergio Perez – 7/10 (Was close to Ocon for a long while but couldn't keep up the entire race. Decent run)
Esteban Ocon – 9/10 (Supposedly a very sick boy this weekend. He didn't show it on track though. Great weekend for him)

Williams:
Felipe Massa – 8/10 (The Williams car is quickly falling down the order compared to other cars. Salvaging points is good)
Lance Stroll – 6/10 (Not as good really. Came together toward the end and finished just outside the points)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso – 8/10 (Ran OK before retiring, definitely above what the McLaren should be able to)
Stoffel Vandoorne – 5/10 (Really quite a poor weekend, only just edging out the likes of Ericsson and rookie Hartley)

Toro Rosso:
Brendon Hartley – 7/10 (Speaking of! With so little F1 experience, this was more than an acceptable debut. I hope he gets to do the last few races of this season, he will surely pick up the pace)
Daniil Kvyat – 7/10 (The angry torpedo actually had a decent race, running in points and finishing there. More than acceptable, actually quite good!

Haas:
Romain Grosjean – 5/10 (Nyeh. Not good enough)
Kevin Magnussen – 3/10 (Really very slow this weekend. Qualified last, on genuine pace, before finishing last)

Renault:
Nico Hülkenberg – X/10 (Unfair to rate the poor boy this weekend)
Carlos Sainz Jr – 9/10 (Hello! This was a debut to remember. P7 in quali, finished there too in the race. He lost a position to Verstappen but gained one from Ricciardo. Strong)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson – 9/10 (The Sauber should not be racing with other cars. It should not be good enough. Why was it good enough? Impressive. That Magnussen move was very brave and very skillful. Magnussen caused the crash. Yes I am Swedish. Magnussen still caused the crash)
Pascal Wehrlein – X/10 (Was far slower than Ericsson in quali and at the start of the race. Was shunted by, guess who, Magnussen! He ended up retiring with damage. Cannot be rated)

Driver of the race? Verstappen. Honorables? Ocon, Hamilton, Ericsson, Sainz.

USA:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - With Ferrari too slow & Red Bull out of contention for other reasons, this was an easy one-two for Merc.
Val - 5 - Except this guy came home fifth, which would've been sixth had Dan's car not died.

Red Bull
Dan - 8 - Imagine if each car had ten power units per season so they didn't have to be stressed beyond their limits.  How many quality races have we lost with DNFs...
Max - 9 - ... or with competitors relegated to the back of the grid.  Thank fuck they didn't have this nonsense when I started watching in the days of Prost & Senna. Minus one for being a dick towards the stewards after the race.

Ferrari:
Seb - 8 - Limited by car.  Seemed a top effort.
Kimi - 8 - As did this.  Great battle with Bottas.

Force India:
Perez - 7 - Outpaced by the young upstart.  Probably not a very happy Sergio.
Ocon - 9 - Was unwell and yet out-drove his far more experienced rival (team-mate).

Williams
Baby - 7 - Good job to grab some points although needed retirements ahead to do so.  Hope Pat Symonds can boost Williams in 2018.
Stroll - 5 - Just about okay.  Good job he has a wealthy patron....

McHonda
Alonso - 8 - Seventh place looked possible but of course the car died.  Fortunately McLaren is moving to the ultra-reliable Renault engines next year....
Van Door - 6 - Started at the back and didn't get much further; mind you, tough to overtake with the slowest car in a straight line.

Toro Rosso:
J.R. - 7 - Got stuck behind Stroll but was fast when in clear air.  Impressive debut.
Kvyat - 8 - Best performance for some time.  Decent way to bow out from F1.

Haas:
Big Jean - 5 - Cars are obviously struggling and so, it seems, are the drivers.
Son of Magnus - 4 - Just struggling that bit more than Grosjean.

Renault:
Hulk - X - Balls.
Sainz - 9 - Great balls of fire!  I'm sure familiarity with Renault engine helped, but still what a result after jumping into a new car.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 7 - Ran well, out-qualified teamy (again), hope Sauber can provide a better machine next year.
Blaise - X - Out-qualified by Eric's son but shunted off too early in race to score.

Brilliant. The Verstappen difference is now 0.775 which is still high but not as high as before. Smallest difference is for Fernando Alonso, only 0.032 separate your rating from mine.

Others with big differences are:

Pierre Gasly (1.0) - only raced twice!
Daniil Kvyat (0.462) - you rate him more highly!
Marcus Ericsson (0.445) - Swedish!
Pascal Wehrlein (0.417) - I rate him more highly than you!
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers

What???  How dare you rate Alonso a lowly 7.583, the man is clearly worth at least a 7.6....

Erm, I can't explain my (relative) munificence towards Kvyat.  Got me well and truly baffled.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on October 30, 2017, 01:15:48 AM
Mejjjicooo!!!

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton - 4/10 (Yes. He's world champion. However, he took 20 laps to pass Sainz. He completely failed to switch on his softs, because the speed was there once he moved to supers. Poor way to be WC, lapped by his team mate and others)
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10 (Ran a pretty good race, just couldn't challenge Red Bull today)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (Looked on course to reach the podium from way back before retiring with the issue "Renault engine". Here's looking at you, Alonso, for 2018.)
Max Verstappen - 9/10 (Took the start through a great aggressive move. Never looked back. Great win.)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 8/10 (Did what he could, fighting back after "accidentally" touching Hamilton at the start to finish 4th at the end)
Kimi R?ikk?nen - 7/10 (Struggled at the start and fell way down, made up for it by passing both Force Indias and a Williams to take a podium)

Force India:
Sergio Perez - 6/10 (His home GP did not live up to expectations. Which is strange saying that, he still finished P7. Would've been P9 though hadn't Lewis and Daniel got into trouble)
Esteban Ocon - 8/10 (Was fighting for podiums for a long while, the VSC didn't really help him out. Still a very strong fifth place, so that's more than just solid)

Williams:
Felipe Massa - 5/10 (Was running in the points for a while but couldn't quite match the.. McLarens? Oh boy. Poor showing)
Lance Stroll - 8/10 (Now this is impressive. He finished P6 after getting real lucky and timing his pit stop perfectly with the VSC. I can't help but feel that he drove his car to a position where he could be lucky. Nice stuff)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10 (From P18, what could we hope for? Points was ambitious. He got there though, but only just)
Stoffel Vandoorne - 6/10 (Slower than daddy Alonso in Mexico, but not by a whole lot. Is really beginning to match the Spaniard, which is nice)

Toro Rosso:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 (Not a stunning performance, but also not useless. Will start to expect more soon, but bear in mind he had literally no running in practice. Left out in FP1, failures in FP2 and FP3 before not qualifying. Impressive from that view)
Brendon Hartley - 7/10 (Was close to points for a bit before dropping off. Then, hit with the Renault curse of having a Renault engine)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean - 4/10 (Really poor driving here, finished way last. Not approved)
Kevin Magnussen - 9/10 (In comparison, this guy did really well. P8! What annoys me the most is that my dear Swede was running with him in the first half of the race and could have finished behind him)

Renault:
Nico H?lkenberg - 8/10 (Was battling with Ocon for P3 for the longest while, but once again a Renault is a Renault and so he retired)
Carlos Sainz Jr - 4/10 (Nowhere today. Ended up retiring out of mercy rather than anything else really. Poor race)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson - 9/10 (I kinda want to rate him 10/10, because a Sauber should not be fighting for P8. Then again, after a great quali + some penalties he started 12th, and Vettel+Hamilton went away quickly so he only really made up two places in the beginning. Pitted to undercut McLaren and remain ahead, but boom goes the VSC and he drops down the field. Retires with a poopoo turbo so probs grid drop for Brazil)
Pascal Wehrlein - 6/10 (Not as strong as Marcus really. It's good for the Swede, looking to 2018. If Sauber does keep one driver from 2017, Marcus is arguing why it should be him)

I also pimped my document again. It's now got a sexier comparison page.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dnPSeVbYFM6KP0SW2SPGzJch7KAiLuaUvD4hpSWSHek/edit?usp=sharing

It's sorted by their absolute rating, which is the average of our two ratings.

EDIT: And if you check our ratings pages, I have now added two comparisons for Hulkenberg and Sainz. This is so that we can compare how we rate Toro Rosso-Sainz and Renault-Sainz, as well as to compare how the Hulk does alongside Palmer vs alongside Sainz.

Didn't quite know what to do with Hartley and Gasly, so decided to simply compare them to each other since they will race a couple races in that constellation. I will not filter out their performances against other drivers at Toro Rosso.

Mexico:

Merc:
Hammy - 4 - That Mercedes obviously hates being in dirty air, but come on, it is still a Mercedes... so slow on first stint.
Val - 7 - It was okay but get the feeling he would've managed only fifth if not for retirements.

Red Bull
Dan - 6 - Tough to score given early retirement.  Poor in qualifying.
Max - 10 - Great qualifying, great move at turn 1, faultless drive thereafter.

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - Strong recovery after clipping Lewis, ended a mere 16 seconds off Kimi.
Kimi - 7 - Middling.  Nowhere near Seb's pace.

Force India:
Perez - 7 - Solid but yet again outclassed by his favourite person who races a pink car and is named Esteban.
Ocon - 9 - Continues to impress.  Has scored in every race this season except Monaco.

Williams
Baby - 6 - Early stop for puncture and then most of race on a set of softs.  Probably not the quickest way to run.
Stroll - 8 - Some luck with timing of VSC but drove well to split the Force Indias.

McHonda
Alonso - 8 - Dragged the McLaren as far up as possible, giving him an extra point for entertaining battle with Hammy.
Van Door - 6 - Not yet amazing me but at least has improved as season progressed.

Toro Rosso:
Gasly - 6 - Solid, especially given lack of running (as mentioned by that Chrill chap).
J.R. - 6 - Made the rookie mistake of having a Renault engine in his car.  Interested to see how he performs in next two races.

Haas:
Big Jean - 3 - Bad.  Just really, really bad.
Son of Magnus - 9 - The polar opposite.

Renault:
Hulk - 8 - Another of those blessed Renault-powered drivers.  Should've been up there with Ocon.
Sainz - 6 - Like Massa, suffered after needing an early stop (lap 2) and just couldn't recover.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 8 - Yet again out-qualified Pascal and raced well until engine gave up the ghost.
Blaise - 5 - Early stop didn't help but isn't he meant to be some great talent?  Should he be getting beaten on a regular basis by Ericsson?

Danke. It has been added.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on November 13, 2017, 12:42:58 AM
Let's go Brazil!

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 (Not a bad recovery at all, but fact of the matter is we expected him to reach P5 and he did so plus Verstappen. Making the podium would have made this 10/10)
Valtteri Bottas - 9/10 (Stuck it on pole, and hounded Vettel throughout the race. Solid return to form for Bottas, who also edged Hamilton in P3 and therefore maybe could've secured pole even if Hamilton had been in Q3)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (Not as strong a recovery as Lewis, but then again he was punted off-track by Vandoorne courtesy of an insane Haas driver)
Max Verstappen - 6/10 (Started 4th, finished 5th. In the end couldn't take it to the top two teams here)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 (Really strong drive here, winning the start which was crucial. Never looked like the fastest guy on track but still secured 25 points)
Kimi R?ikk?nen - 7/10 (As usual struggled to match his team mate, but fended off Hamilton near the end. Decent, nothing more)

Force India:
Sergio Perez - 6/10 (Considering where he started, finishing behind both Massa and Alonso is disappointing. Still, two points is more than 0)
Esteban Ocon - X/10 (Noooooo. His streak of non-DNFs ended by another mad Haas driver. So sad!)

Williams:
Felipe Massa - 9/10 (Great finish to his final Brazilian GP. Solid drive, best of the rest. Utterly dominated Stroll, like he did early in the season)
Lance Stroll - 4/10 (Overtaken by both Saubers, destroyed his front left tyre trying to regain that position. No. Not good)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso - 8/10 (Hounded Massa for most of the race. Didn't he say something like "I want to destroy Massa's race one last time"? I think he did. Gold)
Stoffel Vandoorne - X/10 (Mad Haas driver hit him too. Oh boy, them Haases are crazy)

Toro Rosso:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 (Running in the points for very long, before finally falling back toward the end. Maybe the lack of experience with these tyres are the reason. Still, P19 to P12 is really quite impressive)
Brendon Hartley - 6/10 (Didn't impress as much, struggling with the Saubers for most of the race. Once more, lack of experience just like his buddy in the other car)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean - 2/10 (No. Just no. Really awful drive today, P15 behind everyone except the ailing Stroll. Plus you know shunting Ocon off the track)
Kevin Magnussen - 2/10 (Oh holy. Crashed into Vandoorne and it looked like it was on purpose. Vandoorne was shunted into Ricciardo which almost destroyed the Aussie's race too)

Renault:
Nico H?lkenberg - 6/10 (Kind of solid, but only salvaged 1 point despite starting P7)
Carlos Sainz Jr - 6/10 (Kind of solid, but finished just outside the points despite starting P8. Followed Nico the whole race)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson - 8/10 (Beat Pascal again, despite being told to let the German pass earlier in the race. Hah, take that Pascal. Very impressive, making up 25 seconds over the last 25 laps before passing Stroll and Pascal within 2 laps)
Pascal Wehrlein - 7/10 (Ran a very solid race but in the end couldn't keep the tyres alive. Lost to Marcus again)

Driver of the race? Maybe Vettel. Maybe Massa.

I have noticed the odd glitch.  For instance, every driver in your USA 'Rate the Drivers' post has acquired this funny little group of characters after their names: –

That's assuming you didn't leave them as a cryptic message to the rest of us.

Indeed. I change it back to - every now and then, and a couple days later it's reverted to them strange signs.

EDIT: Added a new function to the comparison page. I have a ranking of the drivers based on our mutual average rating. I now save the previous ranking (from the previous race) to see how they changed. For example, Grosjean went from P16 to P18 and Magnussen from P18 to P20. Gasly from from P20 to P16 (but he is more volatile thanks to having few ratings)

Edit: Hope you take this in the helpful spirit intended, because God knows your English is really fantastic, but it should read 'I change it back too' rather than 'to'.

Edit no. 2: Wow.  All we need for next season is a graph to keep track of their average rating/ranking.

Nice.  I suppose another logical addition would be some year-on-year comparisons - who were the biggest improvers/backsliders compared to previous seasons?
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on November 14, 2017, 05:42:35 AM
Brazil:

Merc:
Hammy - 7 - Should've been pole & win given pace of car but he blew it in quali.  Ridiculous ease of progress on Sunday illustrates why I hate DRS with more passion than I can convey in words alone.
Val - 8 - With Hammy sidelining himself on Saturday, and the car clearly having the legs of the Ferraris, this should've been pole & the win.

Red Bull
The Pie Man - 8 - Had to work harder than Hammy on Sunday (plenty of late braking required) but still too much gain from DRS - car under attack has almost zero chance of defending position.
Max - 8 - Won the inter-team battle in quali, finished as far up as possible in the race.

Ferrari:
Seb - 9 - Great move on Bottas, able to keep clear of DRS zone attacks.
Kimi - 8 - Much closer to Seb and perhaps his best performance of the year, though entirely possible I've forgotten a better one (memory is the first thing to go, followed quickly by memory).

Force India:
Perez - 6 - Had the better of Ocon this weekend which will cheer him, dropping behind Massa & Alonso not so much.
Ocon - X - Haas!

Williams
Baby - 9 - Far, far better way to end things in Brazil.  Nipped ahead of Alonso and used that Merc speed to frustrate him for 65 laps.
Stroller - 3 - Bad.  Really bad.  In practice, in qualifying, in the race, probably on the drive to the hotel afterwards....

McHonda
Aslan - 9 - What an entertaining fight with Massa, if only McLaren had gone for an earlier stop.
Van Door - X - Those bloody Haas drivers!

Toro Rosso:
Gasly - 7 - Decent effort.  Finishing ahead of Sauber (and maybe Haas) is about all the Toro Rosso has in it these days.
J.R. - 5 - Struggled compared to Pierre and then he retired.

Haas:
Big Jean - 3 - Said he suffered a puncture at race start and that's why he went into Ocon - good of the tyre to wait until that exact moment to reveal its injury.  Slow for rest of race.
Son of Magnus - 1 - Needlessly crashed into Stoffel.  Plenty of room on his right, car didn't appear to be sliding/out of control.  Just squeezed right into him.

Renault:
Hulk - 6 - Solid but unspectacular from the Renault boys.
Sainz - 6 - Yes, both of them.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 8 - Besting your team-mate, that's what it's all about.
Blaise - 7 - Ran out of tyres after a long stint.

I have a request:

Explain Hartley's and Wehrlein's nicknames. Explain the lack of nicknames for Force India drivers. Explain why Ricciardo isn't labelled "Honey badger".

The best nickname by far in your list is Felipe baby.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Penfold on November 15, 2017, 12:52:56 AM
I should preface this by saying there is often/almost always no rhyme or reason to the nicknames doled out.

Easiest just to Google J.R. Hartley - yeah, I can see why you wouldn't get that one; whereas it's painfully obvious that Wehrlein is named in honour of 17th Century French mathematician Blaise Pascal.  "Ahh, of course he is, silly me!" I hear you thinking.

Force India duo - nothing leaps out at me, you can't force the issue.

'Honey Badger' is Ricciardo's official nickname and sadly I'm not licensed to use it.  Perhaps I'll think of a different one for him... Desperate Dan springs to mind.  And what does Desperate Dan love?  Cow Pies!  I shall add his new name forthwith.

Edit: 'Val' is short for 'Valerie', in case you've been thinking I just knocked a ton of letters off Bottas's name.
Title: Re: 2017 Season - Rate the Drivers

Right, so your reference for the Kiwi rookie is for a 30 year old Yellow Pages advert broadcast in the UK. Maketh sense.

Regarding Pascal: Ahh, of course he is, silly me!

Force India: If it can't be forced, just force it.

Cow pies for Dan? He'll like it.

Val is quite clearly not short for Valtteri but indeed Valerie. Why won't you come on over, Bottas?

I have played with COLOURS for the ratings. Compare your ratings to mine. Do you prefer the way ratings vs your team mate is shown on my or your stats? Yours is scaled from -2 to +2 (Green to yellow to red).

In yours, drivers like Hulkenberg (+2.857 over Palmer) is very clear whereas drivers like Verstappen (+0.451 over Riccairdo) is much milder in its color.

And since I'm bored, I started playing with a 2018 design. Because Australia is just around the corner.

Which of these do you prefer, nation flags or 3-letter nation codes?

Flags - they look snazzier!  Also, that's a nice, clean design for the 2018 version.

Definitely with colours scaled for the ratings - really stands out who's been dominating their team-mates.

There we have it then. Ocon is called KMag 2. Perez, logically, is then referred to merely as "Token latino guy" courtesy of being the only South American on the grid.

Also, flags it is. I found a download with ALL THE FLAGS OF THE WORLD, so no matter where potential future races are held (European GP, Aland Islands GP, Greenland GP, Vanuatu GP), I've got you covered.

Speaking of Aland Islands, I just learnt about this tiny speck of island which is divided by Sweden and Finland. Weird.

Hamilton. Ham = Skinka, ton is Swedish for note (musical). Skank-note it is.
Bottas. Bot = Cure, tas = takes. So Bottas is "Curetaker". Let's make him the caretaker.

Vettel. Vet = Know. Tel is short for telephone, so he's a smartphone.
Raikkonen. Now this is a handful. Let's be liberal. R?kor = Shrimp. Kungen = The King. So he's Shrimp king.

Ricciardo. Well, Ricc (Rik) = Rich. Ardo, let's interpret it as ?ro, which is an old Swedish form of is. So Ricciardo "is rich".
Verstappen. Vers = Verse. Tapp = Drop. So, he drops the verse. The beat. He's a DJ. DJ Max!

Perez. Er = Your (plural). Your. EZ. You are easy. Perez is now called "Difficulty: Beginner".
Ocon. O = prefix for not. Con = The Cow. So Ocon is not the cow. Let's call him Horse.

Stroll. St is short for Saint. Roll means role, as in the cast of a movie where you play the role of something. So he's Saint Hollywood.
Kubica. Because let's toy with the idea it's him. Kub = Cube. Ica is a grocery store, kind of like the British Tesco. So "Tesco Cube" it is.

Hartley. H?rt = Hard. Ley -> Leja = Hire (usually for criminal activity). So Hartley must surely be the Hard Con.
Gasly. Gas = Gas (hmm). Ly -> lya = (Bachelor's) pad/mancave, etc. So that makes him the Flatulent man.

Sainz. Sa = Said. Inz -> Inse = Realise. Sainz is "That's what she said".
Hulkenberg. Hulka = Throw up. En = One. Berg = Mountain. "Vomit Mountain" is a great name.

Grosjean. Gro = Grow. Sje -> Ske = Happen. I think Grosjean just became Boner man.
Magnussen. Magnus = a name. Sen = Late. He's therefore Unnamed Driver #1.

Alonso. Al = a tree (Alder). Ons = Wednesday (abbrev). Clearly, Alonso is the Midweek Woodworker.
Vandoorne. Van = Used to (something). Door -> D?r = Dying. OK, he's used to dying. There's a name in there somewhere.

Ericsson. Er = Your. ICs = Intercity trains (commuter trains!). On = On. So, Ericsson is the Train driver.
Leclerc. Le = Smile. Clerc -> Kl?r = Dresses. He's dressed for success, with that smile. So he's the Yes Man.

Patent pending.

Some of those are hilarious.  Vomit Mountain... what a name  ;D

As for Kubica's potential return, would 'The One-Armed Bandit' be a touch too insensitive?

My favorites in there are Shrimp King, The Caretaker, and Horse.

Also, I touted the idea of using this system in a Formula 1 Facebook group (Swedish) that I regularly post in. They were keen on joining for next year. Would you like to keep our list separate or be included in a larger document with more people?

Stick us all in together: it will be interesting to see how others score it.

Well Abu Dhabi was boooooring. I'm a bit glad the season is over.

Mercedes:
Lewis Hamilton - 6/10 (Finished where he qualified. Looked set to take on Bottas but then sort of didn't)
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10 (Did keep Hamilton at bay courtesy of qualifying ahead. Was this a grand slam? Pole, fastest lap, lead every lap? Or did he not lead all laps?)

Red Bull:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (Much faster than Maximus this weekend but then kind of retired)
Max Verstappen - 5/10 (Not great. Shadowed Kimi the entire race but never got within one second and thus never could attack)

Ferrari:
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10 (Also quite mediocre, although easily beat his team mate. Meh)
Kimi Raikkonen - 5/10 (He's just missing something. It's not all there)

Force India:
Sergio Perez - 8/10 (Ahead of team mate. That's all we require)
Esteban Ocon - 7/10 (Behind team mate. That's not the best. Still solid P8)

Williams:
Felipe Massa - 8/10 (He scored points, he beat Stroll over the season despite missing one race. Good for him. The old double retiree is still faster than the kid)
Lance Stroll - 4/10 (Woeful. Awful. Lack of anything exciting whatsoever. Sorry Lancia)

McLaren:
Fernando Alonso - 9/10 (McLaren scores 2 points on a track like Abu Dhabi? Good. They shouldn't)
Stoffel Vandoorne - 5/10 (Something like half a minute behind Alonso by the end, if not more. Not good enough)

Toro Rosso:
Pierre Gasly - 4/10 (Both Toro Rossos really slow today, Gasly spinning it and thus finishing behind his team mate. Disappointed)
Brendon Hartley - 6/10 (Better than Gasly, but not by too much. Started last after qualifying last, and then beat the Frenchie. Acceptable but not much more)

Haas:
Romain Grosjean - 7/10 (The Haas cars have lost momentum in the last few races, so P11 was maybe the best Grosjean could do)
Kevin Magnussen - 5/10 (Spun it at the start and then played catchup. Only just held off the Sauber/Toro Rosso train at the end)

Renault:
Nico Hulkenberg - 9/10 (P6 is good, and it ensures Renault overtakes Toro Rosso in the final standings too)
Carlos Sainz Jr - 7/10 (Was running in the points courtesy of a long first stint. Then some dude forgot that tyres need to be attached to the car. And then he retired)

Sauber:
Marcus Ericsson - 6/10 (Only just beaten in quali, and in terms of seconds only just beaten in the race, but overall not nearly as strong as Wehrlein this weekend)
Pascal Wehrlein - 8/10 (A fair bit faster in the first stint got him ahead of the Toro Rossos. He then stayed there. The better Sauber)

Driver of the race? Hmm, the Hulk gets that one. Honorable mention to Alonso and not many others.

Oops, forgotten all about this.  Will get my ratings sorted beginning of next week.

By which I meant Monday... and nobody's more surprised than I to see this post crafted a day earlier then threatened (though obviously still almost two weeks late).

The always (never) exciting Abu Dhabi:

Merc:
Hammy - 6 - Massively dominant car this weekend but beaten by the chap in the other massively dominant car.
Val - 8 - This fellow right here.

Red Bull
The Pie Man - 7 - Fast but the car didn't make it (don't remember why since the race was so dull I paid little attention).
Max - 6 - Slower than Mr. Pie Man.

Ferrari:
Seb - 7 - Well ahead of Kimi.
Kimi - 5 - Well behind Seb.

Force India:
Perez - 7 - Practically nothing between the two FI guys.
Ocon - 7 - What I just said.

Williams
Baby - 7 - A point in his final race.  Shame the car wasn't up to more but at least he got something.
Stroller - 3 - More than one whole second off Massa in Q2.  Fuck me.

McHonda
Aslan - 8 - Another typical high-calibre outing for the Lion.
Van Door - 5 - Not blowing me away with his drives.

Toro Rosso:
Gasly - 5 - Reasonable effort up until he spun it.
J.R. - 5 - Slower than Gasly but finished ahead courtesy of error-free racing.

Haas:
Big Jean - 7 - Not bad to come home eleventh in a Haas.
Son of Magnus - 5 - Okay.  Barely.

Renault:
Hulk - 8 - Very good - as we've come to expect.  Tempted to award a nine but I'm feeling a little mean today....
Sainz - 6 - Off Hulk's pace in quali, racing okay, then team forgot that all wheels need to be attached.

Sauber:
Chrill's mate Marcus - 5 - Matched Pascal in quali but not in the race.
Blaise - 7 - Matched Marcus in quali then beat him in the race.

Brilliant. Time for some end-of-year statistics, as you were.

Penfold, your average rating over the season is 6.704. My average rating is 6.748. I rate drivers on average a tiiiiny bit higher than you, but the difference is negligible.

You awarded a perfect 10 a total of sixteen times this year, 8 of them came in the first four races. I awarded 10 a total of twelve times, and more evenly spread over the year too.

The driver with most 10-pointers is Lewis Hamilton, thrice by you (China, Britain, Belgium) and four times by me (China, Britain, Belgium, Singapore).

The driver beaten the most thoroughly by their team mate is Palmer according to both you and I. In my eyes, Hulkenberg averaged 2.538 better than Palmer. You claim the Hulk beat Palmer by 2.857.

The drivers most evenly matched according to you is Ericsson and Wehrlein. On average, Ericsson bettered Wehrlein by 0.188. Gasly outperformed Hartley by 0.050 but this is based on 3 races together. I claim that the most even pairing was Perez and Ocon, where Ocon outperformed Perez by a meagre 0.012 points over the course of the season. In comparison, you feel that Ocon scored 0.221 better than Perez.

Only Giovinazzi scored the same rating from both of us, averaging 5.500 over two races. Of the regulars, the most evenly matched driver between us is Kevin Magnussen. You rated him 5.850 and I rated him -0.008 less.

The biggest scoring difference is indeed, as we noticed earlier, Max Verstappen. Your rating of 7.941 is 0.879 higher than my rating, despite a decent 9-9-10-9 run that I awarded him near the end of the year.

Our actual rating is this, awarded in F1 championship points style:

25: Sebastian Vettel, 7.915
18: Daniel Ricciardo, 7.734
15: Fernando Alonso, 7.708
12: Lewis Hamilton, 7.536
10: Max Verstappen, 7.502
8: Nico H?lkenberg, 7.487
6: Esteban Ocon, 7.322
4: Sergio Perez, 7.205
2: Felipe Massa, 7.194
1: Valtteri Bottas, 6.979
----
Outside of the top, here's the rest of this list:
11: Carlos Sainz, Jr., 6.732
12: Kimi R?kk?nen, 6.724
13: Marcus Ericsson, 6.493
14: Pascal Wehrlein, 6.298
15: Romain Grosjean, 6.076
16: Stoffel Vandoorne, 5.918
17: Lance Stroll, 5.849
18: Kevin Magnussen, 5.846
19: Daniil Kvyat, 5.302
20: Jolyon Palmer , 4.786

The absolute lowest average was Jenson Button, with a 2.500 after his one-off in Monaco. The highest rated temporary driver is Paul Di Resta, average 6.500 after his Hungary drive for Williams.

The lowest rated driver to secure a 10-pointer was Lance Stroll, who scored 10 by me in Azerbaijan (you awarded him 9). The higest double-10 was Romain Grosjean, awarded 10 by us both in Austria.

In total, including all 25 drivers who completed at least one race this year, you rated 10 of them higher than I did. I rated 14 of them higher than you, and 1 driver shared the same rating.

For 2018, I have pimped the document:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dnPSeVbYFM6KP0SW2SPGzJch7KAiLuaUvD4hpSWSHek/edit?usp=sharing

I have saved the precious 2017 document here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KE9Cy6sqEz8qBSnljQ7s_Z1HVNnUl1u0xVHeEBQCA4A/edit?usp=sharing

I've added some fake numbers just to test some of the new algorithms, so you can check out what happens if for example I forget to rate a race or if a driver scores X, or isn't participating.

I've also prepared the document for future members (Matt? Ljud? Cabanacat? Someone else?). One of the changes required for that was, under Comparison, to showcase a "Highest" as well as "lowest" average and then compute the difference between those two values. What I did for 2017 is I simply checked the difference between yours and mine, but if other people join then the equation needs to look at whichever two values are the most extreme.

All the equations can fit a virtually unlimited number of references, so even if 100s of people join this document can manage. Not that I'd bother to do this for 100 people  :P

Blame Christmas.

2018 document continues to be very pleasing on the eye.  One tweak to consider for the 'comparison' page: if there will be more than just the two of us scoring, then for ease of comparison how about showing each member's average for each driver?  Highest and lowest scores highlighted.

2017 - How the hell did I end up scoring Kvyat almost half a point higher than you?  I'm truly baffled.  And I'm slightly baffled at how Dan the Pie Man finished as your top scorer....

Seems I went a bit nuts with the perfect tens in the first few races: over-excitement at the start of a new season?  Let's see if it happens this year, well, next year unless you're reading this in five+ days' time.

So let's say there's 5 of us, then everyone will have a row of their own with their average for that driver, with the highest and lowest highlighted? Might be doable.

I don't know how Dan got that gold medal of mine. I don't rate him as the best driver of 2017, or well clearly I do... Weird. I'd put him in the top 5 for sure, but not at the very top.

... and now next year has once again become this year.

They say no news is good news... but in the world of F1 no news is just tedious.
