Post by: Chrill on March 29, 2021, 01:51:42 AM
I'm going to give this a try, and we'll see if 2021 is more successful in being rated than 2020. Please join us, all members of MF1! :)

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 (Pressured HARD by Verstappen, and really had to fight for it. Minus for actually being passed at the end, even though Verstappen ended up off-track)
Valtteri Bottas - 6/10 (Bottas 3.0? Bottas 4.0? No, same old Bottas in distant 3rd. This won't cut it once Perez qualifies with this group)

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 9/10 (So very unfortunate to lose the car on the formation lap, but fought back to a solid P5. Not quite the recovery he had here in 2020 eh?)
Max Verstappen - 7/10 (Didn't win despite having probably the fastest car, but came tantalisingly close)

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 6/10 (Definitely solid debut, but could not match his team mate)
Lando Norris - 8/10 (Showed Ricciardo that he's up for a battle if he wants to be the top McLaren this season. We expected nothing less)

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 3/10 (Heh. His Ferrari form continues. Did you know he finished ahead of Mick Schumacher only?)
Lance Stroll - 7/10 (Salvaged a point with a car that didn't quite look up for it)

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 8/10 (Got into Q3, the Alpine looks like it does not belong there but this is Alonso. Ended up retiring after the halfway point, but ran solidly in points up to that point)
Esteban Ocon - 5/10 (Did he drive the same car? Caught out in Q1, not his fault, but failed to make progress in the race)

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 (Encouraging for Ferrari fans to see them battling for 3rd fastest with McLaren. Could definitely have one or two podium visits this season)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 (Would score 7/10 had this been in the middle of the season, but for a debut it's a 8. Finished less than 10 seconds behind Leclerc despite qualifying four places behind him)

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - X/10 (Contemplated a 5 or 6, because he ran almost the entire race without making his way back in the midfield. Ended up picking a non-score for this one)
Yuki Tsunoda - 8/10 (That's a debut. Points on the table in his first race. Once he settles in, he'll be a strong rival to Gasly and these two could form one of the strongest midfield driver pairings this season)

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10 (Perhaps I need to revisit my picture of the Alfas, because I was going to rate him really highly but then realised both cars were pretty close to Q3. So 11th is pretty much a decent result but nothing more)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 (Got lapped, and ended up behind Kimi despite qualifying ahead. Something we saw a lot in 2020 too, Giovinazzi lacking race pace even though he can often match or beat Kimi on a Saturday)

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 0/10 (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH you love to see it)
Mick Schumacher - 6/10 (Solid first outing, except a minus point for that spin on lap 5. Thrilled to see his name in F1)

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 5/10 (As anonymous as ever)
George Russell - 8/10 (Punching above his weight as always. Should not be driving anything other than the second Mercedes this season, but there's a Finn in the way)

It's a fine template, though I note some of the driver names are off.  I'll use the correct monikers on my entry, which will be with you tomorrow.

Entertaining summaries as ever: I knew Marzipan's crash would give you a good laugh!

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 10/10
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 9/10
Max Verstappen - 9/10 (Should have won, wasted his chance)

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10
Lando Norris - 8/10

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 3/10 (Bad luck in qualifying, compounded by a penalty, compounded by again locking up into someone else for no reason)
Lance Stroll - 7/10 (Car doesn't seem that good this year)

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10
Esteban Ocon - 6/10

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 9/10
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 6/10
Yuki Tsunoda - 8/10

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 (Was he even in the race?)

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 0/10 (If not for qualifying, I would have given him a 1)
Mick Schumacher - 6/10 (Did the exact same thing as Mazepin, just avoided the walls)

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 7/10
George Russell - 8/10

A lot of 7s this week because it's hard to say exactly how everyone performed relative to their cars.

Chuck Norris - 9

Alpine:
Alonso - 8
OffOn - 5

Ferrari:
'It is I' - 9
Rally Guy's Son - 8

Hey, that might just be a new record. Four of us rating the race. I hope we'll keep it up over the season, to get some representative numbers. I might look into fixing up a 2021 document sooner rather than later, to keep the stats in.

Obviously number 1 rated is Lewis. Perez and Verstappen are rated equally at 8.750. More stats in document.

Imagine my shock to see none other than the incredible Mazepin planted at the bottom of the table!

I see my McLaren fanboy tendencies are helping Lando and Danny from the off.... Although I was uncharacteristically (damn, that's a long word) generous with my scoring across much of the field -  must've been in a good mood at the time!  Hopefully normal service will resume from Imola.
Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers

There are some discrepancies in our personal average ratings, for me rating Gasly a N/A. It is not included in your personal average, because it's a non-score. For Team Ratings, however, that gives an unfair advantage to Tsunoda's rating. Every team is made up of TWO ratings, and since mine for Gasly isn't 0, it's blank, it gives an incorrect value.

It should sort itself out once Gasly scores with me. ;D

I also note that for "Team Ratings", it highlights Penfold's 6.850 as the highest when Matt's average is in fact higher. I'll perhaps investigate why.

Well that was easily fixed.

Let's do the... uh... Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio del Made in Italy e dell'Emilia Romagna 2021.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 (From pole to P2, if you want to be frank. Impressive comeback, but only required due to his own mistake)
Valtteri Bottas - 3/10 (Ran in 9th all race, and then crashed with Russell. I accept the stewards decision of "no further action" re the crash, but Bottas should not have been that far back to begin with)

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 5/10 (Difficult race once more for Sergio. Impressive qualifying, dropped from 2nd to 4th in the beginning stages, overtook behind SC, and then spun himself out of contention)
Max Verstappen - 9/10 (From 3rd on the grid to P1 into the first corner. Deducting one point for almost crashing at that one restart, but very close to a perfect 10)

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 (Played the team game very nicely when he let Norris pass. That gave McLaren a podium, and D-Ric was still 6th!)
Lando Norris - 10/10 (Made up for a very disappointing qualifying by finding his way back to where he could have started the race. Kept Leclerc away despite DRS, and even kept Hamilton behind for a bit. Really good stuff, really really good)

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 5/10 (It's not getting a whole lot better for him, is it? Started from the box, then some sort of infraction with 5-minute mark which I guess was the moving of the car to the pit lane?)
Lance Stroll - 8/10 (The Aston Martin CAN score points, when others struggle at least. Stroll benefitted from other cars dropping down the order, and showed again that he is damn strong in these conditions. We saw it in Turkey 2020, and remember that P2 on the grid at Monza a few years back? Yeah, Stroll likes the rain)

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 6/10 (He could not match his team mate, but he almost kind of could. At least got himself into the points with the post-race Kimi penalty)
Esteban Ocon - 7/10 (Only just, but still definitely, the better Alpine car in this race. Finished just one second ahead of Alonso, but definitely was ahead)

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 (Perhaps P4 is what Ferrari is capable of right now, but a P2 looked possible at one point)
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 (Started 11th, finished 5th. That's pretty good, you know)

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 (Definitely not the right call with Full Wets at the start, and the driver is to be blamed. Nice comeback drive!)
Yuki Tsunoda - 5/10 (Not his race. Struggled to obey the track limits, ending up with a time penalty of 5 seconds for repeatedly going wide in Turn 9)

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 (Scored solid points! Oh no, they got rid of them. Absurdly harsh penalty, considering he did NOT do what Perez was penalised for but got penalised for NOT doing it. I am confused. Kimi went wide, did not regain his position, was penalised. Perez went wide, regained his position, was penalised. Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old, please)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 4/10 (Well, I guess he was in the race?)

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 6/10 (Hate to admit it, but he had no blame in the Latifi crash. Did end up almost a full lap behind Schumacher despite running ahead after Schumacher's spin)
Mick Schumacher - 6/10 (Almost a full lap faster than Mazepin, but points deducted for spinning the car into the wall all on his own. Rookies gonna rook)

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 2/10 (Spun, rejoined, crashed into an innocent sex offender. Awkward)
George Russell - 6/10 (Aimed for 9th. Found a wall. Strong race up until that point, but should have waited for a better overtaking opportunity)
Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers

I'm sure something happened to Giovinazzi to push him down the field, but bugger me I can't remember it....

Bottas, oh dear.  Apart from Latifi he was surely the worst performer out there this weekend.
Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers

He was good in Q1 and Q2, dear Bottas. Matching or beating Hamilton. And then, well...

Post by: Penfold on April 22, 2021, 05:30:56 AM
Apologies Chrill, mine will be along tomorrow.

Still not sure how to rate Russell...

Oh yeah, Giovinazzi had to pit to have debris removed from his... sidepods, or front wing, I've forgotten already! Or was it just that he had a slow stop because they had to remove debris at the same time, hmm, have to go and check.

Visor tear-off in rear brake duct meant he pitted 5 laps after the red flag period ended, think he was one place ahead of Kimi before that.

I believe that under a safety car you're not allowed to regain your position, whereas in the run up to a race re-start one must regain any places lost.  I mean, why wouldn't it be two different rules....

Merc:
Hammy - 7 - Damaged his wing on lap 1 and was massively, massively, massively lucky with the red flag - a lap down at that point so had completely screwed his race with the off.  Still, recovered well as one would expect
Val - 3 - Slow in qualifying, even worse in the race

Red Bull:
Surger - 4 - Been around long enough to know that you don't overtake behind a safety car, he also generally struggled in the wet
Max - 9 - Point off for scrappy qualifying effort

McLaren:
Ricky Hairdo - 6
Chuck Norris - 10 - Fortunately made a little slip in qualifying otherwise I would've wanted to give him an eleven

A team called Aston Martin:
My Fault Again - 5
Speedy Stroller - 8

Alpine:
Alonso - 5
OffOn - 6

Ferrari:
'It is I' - 8
Rally Guy's Son - 7 - Slithered off the track a couple of times, then got his sensible head on

Boris Johnson (aka Alpha Tory):
Greasy Peril - 8 - Terrible choice of tyres at start, but strong second half
Tsunoda - 4

Alfauber:
Kimi - 8 - Stupid race re-start rule being different to a safety car period....
Adam Ant - 7 - Ran one place behind Kimi until a stray visor tear-off lodged in a rear brake duct and forced an extra stop

Haas:
Massivespin - 5
Mickey Boy - 6

Williams:
Latifi - 1
Jack Russell - 4 - Racing incident with Bottas but still Russell's decision to open DRS and overtake on a wet, narrow, and gently curving section of track.

Thaaanks.

We've got some stats now. Slightly skewed to race 1, since we had 4 ratings there vs 2 ratings in race 2, but still.

Drivers:
1. Sir Lewis Hamilton (9.167)
2. Max Verstappen (8.833)
3. Lando Norris (8.833)

Norris would be P1 if we only counted Penfold and I, but Lewis' had such a strong race in Bahrain that he maintains top status.

Teams:
1. Red Bull Racing Honda (8.833 and 7.333 ---> 8.313)
2. Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari (8.333 and 7.667 ---> 8.000)
3. McLaren F1 Team (8.833 and 6.833 ---> 7.750

The most improved driver rating compared to 2020:
1. Charles Leclerc (+1.793)
2. Lando Norris (+1.508)
3. Max Verstappen (+1.227)

----

Now, for the bad performances!

Worst Drivers:
1. Nikita Mazepin (1.833)
2. Sebastian Vettel (3.667)
3. Nicholas Latifi (4.500)

Worst Teams:
1. Uralkali Haas F1 Team (1.833 and 5.833 ---> 3.563)
2. Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team (3.667 and 7.167 ---> 5.250)
3. Alpine F1 Team (5.500 and 6.833 ---> 6.125)

The least improved driver rating compared to 2020:
1. Sebastian Vettel (-1.883)
2. Valtteri Bottas (-1.008)
3. Pierre Gasly (-0.911)

---

All them stats here:
MF1 Driver Ratings 2021 (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PGqNyT0O6eH1NZd0hC-e9zJ0wzLDMYPkST0BvU0PxBU/edit?usp=sharing)

If Matty and euro wants to rate Imola, please feel free. I'd be happy to add those numbers to our stats.

That's very disappointing of you. Shame.

It does not drop Hamilton down to 2nd though. At 9.000, he retains the top spot.

I often don't get my scores done until after the subsequent race, especially with back-to-back events. At the very least I like to wait until Chrill has given me a hurry up, it's a sort of tradition....

Portugal! Portimao!

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 Hard to fault him this season so far. P2 on the grid, P2 into turn 1, P3 at the restart, but he overtakes both of them to find the victory in the end. Really an inspired Lewis, who does seem to actually thrive under the pressure from Red Bull. Guess he didn't just say it when he asked for competition, he meant it.
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 Definitely an improvement, including some clever usage of that little hill at the beginning of the start/finish straight to keep in front at the SC restart. Still, didn't have the pace to beat Hamilton or Verstappen.

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 7/10 Sacrificed his strategy to help Verstappen close in on Hamilton, but still had the pace to keep ahead of Norris. Neat, albeit a full stop behind the top 3 thanks to that strategy. Got DOTD by F1 fans and I don't agree with that.
Max Verstappen - 8/10 Lacked the ice in his veins to actually beat Hamilton. I still think Red Bull had the faster car on all 3 venues this season.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 Strong drive to score two points when he started 16th, but he had the strategy to finish 7th to be honest.
Lando Norris - 9/10 Best of the rest yet again, sits proudly in P3 in the Drivers Standings. Really quite an impressive season so far.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 6/10 Also a step up, finding his way into Q3. Did not convert that into points, but battled nicely with his team mate and came out on top in that battle.
Lance Stroll - 6/10 P17 to P14 isn't awful, but it's not all that good is it. Was ahead of Vettel at one point but finished behind.

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 9/10 Tempted to go for a 10, but he probably needed to take down Ocon for that. Scored some solid points for Alpine from his 13th slot on the grid, including some good battling with Ricciardo.
Esteban Ocon - 8/10 I mean yeah, he went back in terms of his starting position, but he was so far down at one point and fought his way back so he deserves a fairly decent score. Kept Alonso behind him too, which I didn't expect.

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 Mediums to Hards probably wasn't the superior strategy today, but Leclerc made it work. The only one even close to Norris in the midfield here.
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 6/10 Was pitted too soon, and his mediums just died. Should have run a longer first stint and then mirrored Leclerc with the hards, would have finished in the top 8 then.

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 A point is a point is a point. Grabbed it from Sainz near the end, so a solid day. Still, the AlphaTauri promises more than it delivers so far this season.
Yuki Tsunoda - 5/10 A very quiet race indeed, at one point tripping around a bit in front of Bottas. Not a stunning performance, even by rookie measures.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 1/10 I'm really unsure how to call that incident with Giovinazzi. May revisit this grade if you all have a stronger opinion. EDIT: He just wasn't paying attention. (https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/raikkonen-takes-blame-for-f1-portuguese-gp-crash-with-giovinazzi/6501395/)
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 This car looks capable of points this year, it really does. So starting 12th, one could assume Giovinazzi was in a position to find them. But no. Quiet race, barely saw him except when he collided with the Iceman.

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 3/10 I mean yeah, he got penalised for blocking the race leader at one point so that's embarassing. And yeah, he was a full MINUTE behind his equally inexperienced rookie teammate, but still. I did not see him spin.
Mick Schumacher - 8/10 He not only battled strongly with Latifi, he got past him when Latifi stressed himself into making a mistake. Really a very solid drive in a really poor car. Thrilled to see the Schumacher name overtaking somebody, sure to be a rare sight this season.

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 4/10 Ran ahead of Russell for a bit, but in the end lost out to a Haas.
George Russell - 5/10 Starting P11, this surely was the best opportunity for points Williams have had in a long while. So what did Russell do? Well, he cemented the image of being Mr. Saturday.

My driver of the day? Oh, that's Alonso, with honorable mentions to Hamilton, and Norris.

Another weekend with three attempts to define track limits, plus 5 and a half laps behind the safety car was a poor do.

Nice touch to rate Race Control! The track limits were clear to me, however. I disagree with the complaints from Red Bull, turn 14 was clearly going to be monitored in the race and this was announced well in advance.

All corners should be monitored and the drivers should keep part of the car on the actual track!

Scores coming soon, possibly later today but if not then definitely tomorrow morn.  That's still pretty quick for me....

I still don't see why F1 can't just introduce mobile gravel traps. Remove a piece of the tarmac on the outside, fill that shit with gravel. Let cars run wide, and lose track time, and then by the end of the race remove that mobile gravel trap and refill it with whatever other racing classes need. F1 is big enough to adapt the tracks this way.

Tracks should, put simply, not be built in a way that you can earn time outside it. Any area where you can, you should be allowed to drive. That's as clear as it can ever be.

Thaaanks!

This has created some big movements between Imola and Portugal:

1. Kimi has dropped from 6th to 17th due to causing a collision which we all blamed him for. He scored 0.333 in Portugal, dropping his average to 5.2 for this season
2. Lando Norris overhauls Max for first, with an absolutely absurd but deserved 9.2 average score.
3. Giovinazzi is 16th best this year with 5.4 as his average, which is still 0.6 better than his 2020 average of 4.8.
4. Nikita Mazepin's average is now 2.3. I don't know if we've ever seen such a low average after 3 races, but we do hope he'll improve. His teammate Schumacher is 13th with an average score of 6.1

As always, this and more here:

Let's visit Barcelona.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 10/10 | Winning from pole is one thing. OVERTAKING IN BARCELONA to win with an extra stop? That's something else. Incredible.
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 | Poor getaway, but decent recovery. In the end, he was just 10 seconds off Verstappen which means he matched the front runners pace once he disposed of Charles Leclerc. Still, should've been there from the start to even more strongly support Lewis Hamilton.

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 7/10 | Once again good race pace, but lacking on Saturdays. Had he qualified in the top four, this race could have gone very differently.
Max Verstappen - 9/10 | Got caught out by the superior strategists operating out of Brackley, and didn't have the final oomph in his tyres.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 | Definitely had the upper hand on Norris, for the first time this year. Qualified ahead, raced ahead, and finished ahead quite clearly.
Lando Norris - 6/10 | Not up to his absurdly high standards so far in 2021. He was lapped for the first time this year, despite the pack getting bunched up after Tsunoda's engine shut off some 5-10 laps into this race.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 6/10 | Very mediocre race, once again outpaced by his "pay driver" team mate despite running the same updates package.
Lance Stroll - 7/10 | Only slipped out of the points after trying to find his way past Alonso and going wide into turn 1. Decent, if not great.

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10 | Tried to make a one-stop strategy work but his tyres absolutely collapsed. Could not keep the guys behind, at one point holding Russell up who was also on that risky one-stopper.
Esteban Ocon - 8/10 | Great qualifying followed by a pretty darn strong race. Impressive. Maybe Alonso does have a proper challenge here, if Ocon keeps this up.

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 10/10 | The Ferrari boys are at it. This could have been a podium, had he been able to pit before Bottas and force him to run long. Easily the fastest midfield car, having a full pit stop in hand over all of the others. Stunning drive.
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 | The last driver not lapped. Only his team mate, Ricciardo, and the top two teams avoided lapping. That's enough to put him on a pretty high score. The Ferraris are currently the third strongest team

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 | Salvaged a point, which is nice, but the AlphaTauri is not all it looked to be at pre-season.
Yuki Tsunoda - X/10 | On Saturday, he implied his car wasn't working as intended compared to Gasly. On Sunday, it broke down after 6 laps. So that's unfortunate.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 | Clearly the Alfa Romeo, much like the Alfa Taureo, isn't as fast as we though it could be. Beating a bunch of other cars was still impressive, and he was in that hunt for the final point
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 | Well I picked him as my weekly, of course his pit stop was going to go badly. Sort of never recovered.

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 5/10 | Still half a minute off Schumacher, but not nearly as bad as some other races.
Mick Schumacher - 7/10 | Battled valiantly with other cars at the start, but his pace dropped him down the order. In the end, he was the only one alongside Mazepin to be lapped twice.

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 6/10 | Beat Alonso, but only because Alonso's tyres dropped off.
George Russell - 8/10 | Qualified a bit worse than in Portugal, but definitely raced better. Ran 11th for a long time, pushing Alonso for that P10 spot. The Williams cars will surely score a point or two this season if they keep this up. We'll have races of attrition, we'll have freak weather, or something else that helps Russell or Latifi reach P10.

Driver of the race? Oh. Leclerc. But Hamilton is a 10/10 too.

Spain:

Merc:
Hammy - 9 - Victory was inevitable the moment he made pit stop no. 2 - was always going to catch Max, was always going to then ease past him.
Val - 7 - You know, it was okay for a second driver.

Red Bull:
Surger - 6 - Screwed up his race on Saturday afternoon.
Max - 9 - Not enough pace to beat a Merc. in Hamilton's hands.  Needed track position to slow Lewis, so couldn't risk diving into the pits for an early second stop.

McLaren:
Ricky Hairdo - 9
Chuck Norris - 6

A team called Aston Martin:
My Fault Again - 6
Speedy Stroller - 7

Alpine:
Alonso - 6
OffOn - 8

Ferrari:
'It is I' - 9
Rally Guy's Son - 7

Boris Johnson (aka Alpha Tory):
Greasy Peril - 7
Tsunoda - X

Alfauber:
Kimi - 7
Adam Ant - 7

Haas:

Williams:

Former Yugoslovian Republic of Monaco - Douze Points!

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 5/10 | Well now that wasn't... great was it. Poor in qualifying, and lost two places in the race too. Nope, not good enough. Simply not. Stuck behind Gasly, but passed by others in the pits. He did secure a FL so that's one point back.
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10 | Heartbreak! With Leclerc gone, Bottas had a safe P2 and could have gone P1 if he had played the tactics game right. And then, his pit stop turned into a retirement when the wheel simply refused to come loose. It's still on the car as we speak!

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 9/10 | In the race, he was clearly fast enough for a podium. Reaching the podium from 9th on the grid in Monaco is Olivier Panis levels of challenging, but P4 was good too. By extending his first stint, he easily overcut the guys inbetween. With Lec and Bot gone, he found another 2 spots.
Max Verstappen - 8/10 | Had absolutely zero rivals once Bottas left, and could therefore drive with a big margin and save on both car and tyres. Which he did. Easiest Monaco win he'll ever have, for sure.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 5/10 | No.... Nooooo. Daniel. You were lapped. By your team mate. That's a big no-no. P12 sounds decent-ish if you fail to reach Q3, but it's not good enough.
Lando Norris - 9/10 | Someone is back in form! You'd think finishing 3rd in Monaco in a McLaren is a 10/10? He defended from Perez too? He was only 20s behind the winner? Yeah, but he also didn't actually have to pass anyone to get there. He was 5th, and "lucked" into 3rd by Bottas and Leclerc not finishing.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 | Someone is back in form! Whereas Lando's form dipped for a race, Vettel's dipped for two years. I really hope this is the catalyst he and the team needed.
Lance Stroll - 9/10 | Overcut, just like Vettel, but from further back. Really very impressive to keep lapping faster than Ocon and Giovinazzi despite running such old hard tyres.

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 6/10 | IF your team mate scores, so should you. Oh you went out in Q1? Don't.
Esteban Ocon - 7/10 | Essentially held on to his position on the grid by passing Giovinazzi and losing Stroll. Boosted into the points courtesy of Lec+Bot.

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - X/10 | That hurt. That hurt real bad.
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 | With Bottas and Leclerc gone, Sainz was the only one even remotely capable of challenging Verstappen. Which he ended up not doing, his tyres blistered and he had to drop back. The P2 was never in risk though. Solid.

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 | Driving an AlphaTauri from start to finish with Mercedes up your butt? That sounds nasty. Hamilton was nowhere to be found though, but Perez and Vettel (only just) squeezed by to bring Gasly down to 6th. For that, he does not score higher.
Yuki Tsunoda - 5/10 | Tsunoda better return to his Bahrain form, or Marko will promote somebody else next year. Albon, Vips, Lawson, and others are all waiting to be promoted.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10 | Solid but not spectacular. Found his way past Ricciardo with a superior strategy, but not close enough to grab a point off his team mate.
Antonio Giovinazzi - 7/10 | Started 10th, finished 10th. Clearly faster than Ocon ahead, but this circuit does not allow overtaking so he remained behind.

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 7/10 | That was not bad at all. Kept it clean all weekend long, not even a little brush or an off moment. Kept the same up in the race, but had atrocious pace. Passed Schumacher after losing out to him on Lap 1.
Mick Schumacher - 7/10 | Snuck past Mazepin into the hairpin, cheeky move. Then had some sort of issue which cost him almost a minute, but was eventually solved and he recovered to finish right behind Mazepin.

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 6/10 | Eventless race. Got past Tsunoda, but that's about it
George Russell - 6/10 | Like his team mate, but just ahead, and without the Tsunoda thing because he started ahead of Tsunoda.

Driver of the race? Oh, maybe Vettel or Perez.
Driver of the weekend? Honestly, maybe Bottas. That Mercedes did not belong in the top 3 on Saturday, and he wasn't far behind Verstappen before pitting.

Fair enough! I try to rate the Sunday only, but there's no reason why we can't include the performance across the weekend. Mind you, he was the fastest when crashing ;D

Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers

Azerbaijan! I'm really glad it's spelt that way in English. The Swedish spelling of the country mirrors the Azeri much too closely: Azerbajdzjan.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 5/10 | Difficult to rate. I'd expect some of you to give him a 2-3, and some an 8-9. Fact is, the car seemed awful and he was running in the top 3 until the very end. A 5 is my compromise, since him flicking the switch to ruin his brake balance was an error, albeit a very unfortunate and random one.
Valtteri Bottas - 1/10 | Sorry. Without any apparent issues, and with 2 of his top rivals out, he still failed to even score points. Horrid.

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 10/10 | Great start brought him from 6th to 3rd quickly, and then he jumped Hamilton in the pits. Then, he kept Hamilton behind, even when the Brit had DRS, for pretty much the entire race. Then, when everything collapsed around him, he kept his cool to secure his 2nd victory in F1. From 6th to win is always a 10, isn't it?
Max Verstappen - 9/10 | Faultless, and surely cannot be blamed for the crash. Deserved to win.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 | Decent, but didn't quite switch to aggressive mode at the 2-lap sprint in the end. This put him behind some drivers he could have, and maybe should have, finished ahead of.
Lando Norris - 8/10 | Had a shot at that final podium spot, but came out at the bottom of that 3-way scrap. Still some very solid points to see him safely on top of the "Formula 1.5" leaderboards.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 10/10 | 11th to 2nd, obviously impressive. Even if Hamilton and Verstappen had finished the race, Vettel was 5th at worst. Definitely benefitted from starting on fresh softs, both at the start and the restart.
Lance Stroll - 6/10 | Ran OK from his bottom-of-the-grid start when the Pirellis said "nah".

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 9/10 | The old man has got some fire in him still. Always was a specialist at starts and opening laps. Went from 10th to 6th in those final laps alone. Perhaps the confidence boost he needed?
Esteban Ocon - X/10 | DNFed pretty much right away.

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 | Obviously got P1 gifted to him on Saturday, we knew the car lacked that kind of pace. Finishing 4th was probably far better than Ferrari anticipated going into this weekend.
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 6/10 | With the drivers dropping out around him, he maybe should have been able to finish 1-2 spots further up.

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 9/10 | Unlike Leclerc, Pierre's P4 wasn't just luck. This guy looked fast all weekend, including in long runs. Failed to keep Vettel behind at the restart, but that was a solid weekend from Gasly.
Yuki Tsunoda - 8/10 | And from Tsunoda! Some intense battling at the end, but even though he lost Alonso he kept another Spaniard behind him. His best race finish yet, and we can hope he will be able to calm down and find his rhythm soon.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 | A point is a point. Especially if you earn it by literally being faster than your fellow Finn at Mercedes. His first point of the year I think?
Antonio Giovinazzi - 8/10 | Also a strong race. Started from the bottom, finished just outside the points. Like Kimi, Giovinazzi drove past Bottas due to being faster. Nice.

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 5/10 | Was 1 minute behind Schumacher before unlapping himself during Stroll's SC, and then jumping ahead at the restart. Tried to kill Schumacher on the final lap, but failed.
Mick Schumacher - 8/10 | Ran with the Williams cars, and far far ahead of Mazepin, all race. Was passed at the restart, but found his way back at the final lap to claim 13th and jump ahead of Williams in the championship.

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 7/10 | Ran an unremarkable race. We only really saw him when his team shouted "STAY OUT", and then they expected Latifi to interpret that as "THROUGH THE PITS". So I can't really pin the blame on Latifi for that silly mistake.
George Russell - 7/10 | DNFed from an equally unremarkable race. Probably could have finished ahead of the Haas cars, but never had the pace to keep up with Alfa Romeo or Bottas (heh, Bottas).

Driver of the day? See Monaco:

Valtteri Bottas - 1/10

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 10/10
Max Verstappen - 10/10

Race control: 4/10
Ridiculous length of time to deploy the Safety Car on both occasions.
Interesting decision to create a 2 lap sprint race, rather than simply finish under Safety Car as has happened a number of times.

Right! I haven't summed this up in 3 races, so we have a lot of changes!

Most improved:
Pierre Gasly (P11 -> P6)
Sebastian Vettel (P18 -> P13)

Most Deteriorated:
Daniel Ricciardo (P8 -> P12)

Some other standouts:
- Despite some low scores for Lewis in the last two races, we rate him as the 4th best driver so far this year.
- The driver most improved compared to 2020 is Antonio Giovinazzi (P15), who averages 6.211 compared to his 2020 average of 4.800 (+1.411 compared to 2020)
- The best driver not to race in 2020 is Fernando Alonso (P9), who averages 6.842. If we were to compare him to his 2018 result, he is down 0.969 (his 2018 result was 7.811)

This Vettel revival has been quite unexpected, thought he was all but done for after his Ferrari travails

As promised, here's France:

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 | Tried to keep tyres alive, didn't manage
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 | Like Lewis but further behind

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 7/10 | Ran much faster at the end but could not catch Lewis
Max Verstappen - 8/10 | Got past thanks to some mighty DRS work and a straight-line speed advantage anyway

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 |
Lando Norris - 8/10 |

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10 |
Lance Stroll - 8/10 | Found points from way back, and only 10s down the road from Vettel

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10 |
Esteban Ocon - 5/10 |

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 5/10 | The car didn't work
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 6/10 | The car didn't work but at least he tried

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 | Still not finding that absolute mega result despite solid qualifying
Yuki Tsunoda - 7/10 |

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 5/10 |
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 |

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 4/10 |
Mick Schumacher - 6/10 |

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 6/10 |
George Russell - 9/10 | Getting closer to them points. Maybe Styr.. No? OK, maybe Austria.

Styria Styria Styria!

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 | The car does not have the pace, but he had a pit stop over Bottas which is strong
Valtteri Bottas - 6/10 | Could not match Hamilton at all, and only kept Perez behind because the Mexican started poorly

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 7/10 | Had the pace to fight Bottas, but not the position. Came from too far back in the end, but one more lap would have seen him 3rd
Max Verstappen - 10/10 | Lights to flag, dominant display. Nothing else to it in my book

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 5/10 | This is starting to worry me
Lando Norris - 9/10 | Still clearly the best of the rest, Sainz could not catch him here

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 5/10 | Started in the middle, finished there
Lance Stroll - 7/10 | Qualified better, so started and finished in the points. Boom

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10 | It's slowly getting better for the old Spaniard
Esteban Ocon - 5/10 | New contract, not a new great result to reflect it. Went nowhere, like many others

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 9/10 | Maybe 70% at fault for his lap 1 troubles, but fought back beautifully. Deducting one for that first lap
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 9/10 | Great race pace, even unlapping himself over Hamilton. Remember he started outside the points!

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - X/10 | Could probably have enjoyed a great race but, well, didn't
Yuki Tsunoda - 6/10 | Kept on Alonso's tail but never found his way past. Even ran behind Russell for a bit!

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10 | Always strong in race, although he is slipping on Saturdays. Not good enough for points
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 | Often out-qualifies the old Finnerino, but rarely beats him on a Sunday

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 2/10 | A full lap down on Mick, although he was briefly ahead after the start. He just does not have the stamina to be fast all race
Mick Schumacher - 7/10 | Well he kept Latifi behind, but I'm not quite sure what he did to achieve that

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 3/10 | Did he have issues here? I don't know, but he was +3 laps down despite Russell running solidly in the points
George Russell - 9/10 | I mean, he was going to score points wasn't he? He was surely going to. Let's hope Austria brings it

Val - 7

Red Bull:
Surger - 7
Max - 9

McLaren:
Ricky Hairdo - 6 - Awful qualifying, great race start, car issue, got stuck behind people
Chuck Norris - 9

A team called Aston Martin:
My Fault Again - 5
Speedy Stroller - 7

Alpine:
Alonso - 7
OffOn - 5

Ferrari:
'It is I' - 6 - Is it my imagination that this guy clips a lot of other cars? Enjoyed a strong recovery drive after ending Gasly's race... points deducted for carelessness
Rally Guy's Son - 8 - Point off for qualifying effort, but took full advantage of having tyre choice

Boris Johnson (aka Alpha Tory):
Greasy Peril - X - Nice one Charles!
Tsunoda - 6

Alfauber:
Kimi - 7
Adam Ant - 5

Haas:
Massivespin - 2
Mickey Boy - 6

Williams:
Latifi - 4
Jack Russell - 9 - This guy has all the luck!

Can't say I agree with your rating of Russell here! Qualifying 8th, being on a superior strategy to those around him (mediums), he should have stayed close to the Ferraris but he dropped out of points. I'm on holiday now, so I won't be at the computer much, but I definitely rate this as one of Russell's top 3 worst races of 2021.

Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers

I rated one Austria, but I'll skip the 2nd because it's been a while now. Still on holiday, so I'm inconsistent in rating!

Great Britain, let's go.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 7/10 | Incredible pace near the end to catch Leclerc. Scared him off the track, had Leclerc turned in it would've been a second Verstappen crash. Deducting one point for Verstappen-crash, and one point for Leclerc-scare. Neither move seemed fair to me.
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 | Genuinely not sure if he was in this race. Lost positions on the start and the restart and honestly looked slower than a Ferrari here. Huh.

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 4/10 | Got stuck early on, dumped his hard tyres, then was stuck with a shite strategy and failed to overtake midfield cars. Weakest race of the season? At least managed to remove Hamilton's FL point, so that increased Verstappen's gap somewhat.
Max Verstappen - X/10 | Hard to rate. I blame Hamilton for the crash, but in a sort of 60/40 scale. Verstappen knew he could never make that corner from so far out, turned in anyway. Expected outcome.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 7/10 | Picking up the pace somewhat, but still some ways behind his team mate
Lando Norris - 9/10 | Honestly, without the slow pit stop he might've been able to battle Bottas. And he definitely could have tipped the scales in favour of Leclerc, because Hamilton would have had to negotiate this guy again.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 4/10 | Not his race. A typical Vettel spin, and he was out.
Lance Stroll - 8/10 | Solid stuff, scoring points from like 14th on the grid.

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 8/10 | Master of the first lap. Luckily he got THREE of those this weekend, one on Saturday and two on Sunday. Made the most of his getaways to bring himself in front of faster cars, and kept many of them behind all race.
Esteban Ocon - 7/10 | One of the guys stuck behind aforementioned first lap master Alonso.

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 10/10 | From 4th to 3rd at the start, slipped past Hamilton (and Verstappen) in the crash, and then... looked set to WIN? In a 2021 Ferrari? Wow. Such a shame it didn't work for him, I was desperate to hear the Italian anthem, aka the Ferrari/F1 song.
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 7/10 | Recovered nicely in the Sprint after being pushed off by Russell, but couldn't match the McLarens in the race.

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 6/10 | Sincerely mediocre race, but was on for points until he got a puncture
Yuki Tsunoda - 7/10 | Equally mediocre race really, but at least he got the point. So that's a bonus point. That's why he's at 7 when Gasly is 6.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 5/10 | It's all getting rather uninspired. Maybe Kimi really should retire after this year.
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 | Still stronger in quali than race, perhaps he should join Kimi in retiring. Alfa Romeo could do with a pairing like Gasly and Schumacher, no?

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 7/10 | Didn't have the pace on Schumacher, but had the tyre management. Bonus point for a genuinely good overtake on his team mate
Mick Schumacher - 5/10 | Was faster, like always, but killed his tyres and could not fend off Mazepin. Dead last.

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 7/10 | Solid clean race, beating Kimi and the Haases (and both Red Bulls, but I mean...)
George Russell - 7/10 | The sprint was not his friend, and 12th ended up being the best he could realistically achieve.

Obviously, my man of the match is Leclerc.

Oh yeah, second Austria race, oops....

Umm, I'll do Silverstone one soonish... unusually for me just off the race as I didn't watch any of the qualifying nonsense
Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers

The Sprint was actually a good bit of racing, I'd say. View it as part of the race proper, and just see it as we get extra laps.
Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on August 02, 2021, 01:55:23 AM
Let's all get to rating the racing at Hungaroring, and I'll then clear the cobwebs from the document and assemble some stats!

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 | Clean start, enough to stay away from the bowling game behind him into turn 1. Took the 2nd start ahead of the Medical car which was impressive. Struggled a bit on his first stint, but got faster with every change of tyres. Almost collapsed at the podium, that looked a bit scary to me.
Valtteri Bottas - 1/10 | This is all on Bottas. Was it enough to secure a Mercedes seat for 2022?

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - X/10 | Bottas ended his race.
Max Verstappen - X/10 | Bottas ended his race, even though Verstappen fought back with the damage to secure two points.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 3/10 | With so few drivers running, NOT scoring points is an achievement. Could not beat a broken Red Bull, nor two healthy Williams cars. Too weak, much much too weak.
Lando Norris - X/10 | Wanted to rate him due to an excellent start, but honestly he was only in the race for a few hundred meters.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 | The only thing he did wrong was not making the pass, instead locking up a couple times. And not being able to extract fuel, but that's not really on Vettel as such.
Lance Stroll - 1/10 | Replicated on Leclerc what Bottas attempted on Norris, to great effect.

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 9/10 | Valiant defending with Lewis (their combined age is 76!) definitely saved the win for Ocon.
Esteban Ocon - 10/10 | Vettel was within 2-3 seconds all race long, but never found his way past. We did not see Ocon miss a single braking point all race, never ran wide. Excellent composure under pressure, easy 10/10 for me.

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - X/10 | Stroll ended his race.
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 | Made up a lot of places into turn 1, but struggled to pass Tsunoda and Latifi which hampered his chances of a win here.

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 9/10 | Got caught out badly by being on the outside into turn 1, dropping him way back. With a healthy car was able to fight back and even beat his team mate.
Yuki Tsunoda - 7/10 | This may seem harsh after a best-ever 6th, but he should have been near the podium considering where he was at during the restart. Could not pass Latifi on-track, and dropped way back. So much so that Gasly could pit for fresh tyres at the end and grab the bonus point for FL.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 | Found points when Vettel was DSQ, despite being dropped WAY back with a 10s penalty after taking Mazepin out in the pits at that messy restart.
Antonio Giovinazzi - 7/10 | Got a Stop/Go for speeding in the pitlane at that first start, which was deserved seeing how there was so many staff running around at the time. Never fast enough to catch back up.

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - X/10 | Taken out by the old Finn.
Mick Schumacher - 6/10 | Looked a bit slower than usual, but without Mazepin it's hard to really tell. Ran in the points after a clean start, but dropped back before even pitting.

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 9/10 | Realistically the best he could have hoped for. He ran 3rd for so long, but lost out to Tsunoda for 6th. Had he grabbed the AlphaTauri, that would have been a perfect 10.
George Russell - 8/10 | You'd think Williams scoring double points warrant a double-10 too? Nah. Russell beat a hopeless Ricciardo, a penalised Raikkonen, and a broken Verstappen. More is required for a higher score than this.

Driver of the race? Naturally Ocon, but shoutouts to Latifi, Hamilton, and Alonso.

With all them ratings, we now have a half-season report!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PGqNyT0O6eH1NZd0hC-e9zJ0wzLDMYPkST0BvU0PxBU/edit#gid=512518002

So, the last update was following the Azerbaijan GP in Baku, 5 races ago. We actually don't have a lot of movement from then to now:

Biggest climber:
1. George Russell (11th -> 8th), +3
2. Fernando Alonso (9th -> 7th), +2
3. Lots of guys with one place up

Biggest drop:
1. Lance Stroll (8th -> 13th), -5 (almost entirely caused by Hungaroring)
2. Sergio Perez (5th -> 9th), -4
3. Charles Leclerc (4th -> 3rd), -1

Compared to 2020, these drivers have improved the most:
1. Max Verstappen (8.962, an improvement of +1.356)
2. Lando Norris (8.655, an improvement of +1.330)
3. Antonio Giovinazzi (5.938, an improvement of +1.138)
4. Charles Leclerc (7.571, an improvement of +1.031)
5. Sebastian Vettel (6.375, an improvement of +0.825)

And compared to 2020, the drivers with the worst deterioration:
1. Kimi Räikkönen (5.906, a decrease of -1.002)
2. Lance Stroll (6.281, a decrease of -0.830)
3. Daniel Ricciardo (6.452, a decrease of -0.806)
4. Valtteri Bottas (5.375, a decrease of -0.800)
5. Sergio Perez (7.172, a decrease of -0.578)

Of course, our worst driver by far is Nikita Mazepin with an average score of 3.414. I rate him higher than anyone, with a 4.333, but that still means he is my candidate for worst driver so far.

It's hard to compare our differences in ratings, since Matt has rated twice and is polluting our standings. Matt, unless you catch up I'll have to remove you ;D

The biggest team mate gaps are:
1. Uralkali Haas F1 Team (+3.296 in favour of Mick Schumacher)
2. Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team (+2.536 in favour of Lewis Hamilton)
3. McLaren F1 Team (+1.915 in favour of Lando Norris)
4. Williams Racing (+1.698 in favour of George Russell)
5. Red Bull Racing Honda (+1.371 in favour of Max Verstappen)

In comparison, the tightest team mate battle sees Kimi Räikkönen beat Antionio Giovinazzi with just +0.211 at Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen.

The link is at the top for even more stats and scores.

Cheers for the update and summation.  That gap between Hamilton and Bottas is quite something!

I won't be rating Belgium, but if you want to rate based on quali (and Russell is a given 10, then), go ahead!

Tempted to score Spa just so I can write "drove a flawless race" for every driver... but think I'll skip it.

I'll get the Dutch GP in quickly, with fewer and/or shorter comments, and then move to Italy in the afternoon or evening:

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 | Nothing to do about the Red Bull's pace
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 |

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 8/10 | The only one to overtake more than once, I think, but he enjoyed a superior car to all the drivers he passed
Max Verstappen - 9/10 | Supermax. What pressure, but he coped with it

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 5/10 |
Lando Norris - 6/10 |

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 6/10 |
Lance Stroll - 6/10 |

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 8/10 |
Esteban Ocon - 6/10 |

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 |
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 7/10 |

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 |
Yuki Tsunoda - X/10 |

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Robert Kubica - 7/10 | With little to no practice, getting remotely competitive in quali was impressive. Race pace was fair
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 | Can't catch a break eh

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - X/10 | Don't remember him
Mick Schumacher - 4/10 | Probably had a reason to be so far behind eh?

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 6/10 |
George Russell - 6/10 |

Italia! Let's goooo

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 7/10 | Made up for his horrid Sprint start by beating Norris off the line, then lost out to Verstappen and dropped back down to 4th. Could have given Verstappen room in the incident, but was never required nor expected to do so. Lacked pace to beat Ricciardo.
Valtteri Bottas - 10/10 | Yes, circumstances brought him up to 10th. 19th to 3rd is always very impressive, and at one point perhaps even a race win was on the table

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 5/10 | Let's be honest, this was yet another poor weekend. Way too slow in quali, and absolutely unable to overtake in the race. Inherited a podium when others crashed, but also didn't overtake fairly and correctly got a 5s penalty
Max Verstappen - 7/10 | Hard to rate, so I'll put him equal to Hamilton. Drove the better race, but I agree with the stewards that he was predominantly to blame for the crash so deducting one point

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 10/10 | Oh hello there. I know you. It's the old Ricciardo. The fast one. The one who beat Vettel at the team where Vettel won 4 world championships. Brilliant start, never looked back, likely to have won even if Verstappen and Hamilton never crashed
Lando Norris - 9/10 | Very tempted to drop another 10 here, but fact is he lost a position at the start and then failed to pass his team mate. So that's a 9.49, and it rounds down to 9.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 6/10 | Did he encounter trouble? Oh yeah, he did. Stroll was the trouble.
Lance Stroll - 7/10 | Deducting one for hitting his team mate, but that was pretty solid nonetheless.

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10 | The Alpine wasn't fast enough at Monza, but like usual Alonso grabs the opportunity when presented
Esteban Ocon - 6/10 | Like Alonso but lower start and finish

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 | Had nothing to do with the podium battle, but at least gave it a good try. P4 was realistically far better than Ferrari could have hoped for
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 7/10 | Dropped away from Leclerc just a little bit near the end, which was enough to not overtake Perez due to the Mexican's 5s penalty. Still a very solid race

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - X/10 | Well, this was...
Yuki Tsunoda - X/10 | ...highly unfortunate

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Robert Kubica - 7/10 | At least got 2 hours of practice instead of 1 this weekend, and was ahead of both Haases.
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 | Is this the new Mr Saturday? Impressive qualifying, and indeed impressive Sprint, but then "nope goes the Italian" and that was that.

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 3/10 | Literally spun his team mate out, got penalised for it, but dropped behind his team mate even before the penalty because he was just that slow.
Mick Schumacher - 5/10 | Impressive to recover so fast after being tapped by Mazepin, but was never in a position to trouble even the one-armed bandit.

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 7/10 | Did the Williams car get good, or did Latifi take a step? Sure he grabbed some spots from Gasly, Hamilton, and Verstappen. Still, almost another points scoring finish
George Russell - 8/10 | Did the Williams car get good, or did Mr Saturday lose his calendar? Started BEHIND Latifi, but definitely finished ahead. 2 points, his 3rd points finish in 4 races (assuming Spa was a race...)

Driver of the day? Ricciardo
Driver of the weekend? Bottas
Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on September 29, 2021, 05:29:33 AM
Starting to feel lonely here, but let's do Russia.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 | Struggled to match the front runners, and stayed stuck behind orange cars again. Made the right call near the end, and emerged almost a full minute ahead of eventual P2 man Verstappen
Valtteri Bottas - 3/10 | Absolutely unacceptable pace, stuck in something like 14th before the rain changed everything. Bottas gambled for inters early, and moved up to 5th

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 5/10 | On course for a podium, but should have qualified and raced much higher up all race. Made the wrong call in the rain, and dropped to 9th
Max Verstappen - 9/10 | Lucky? Sure. But drivers like Hamilton, Verstappen, they make their own luck. P2 was stronger than expected, but he made it happen

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 | Kept Hamilton behind which gave Norris the gap needed. Then moved to inters at the right time, and finished veeery close to a podium
Lando Norris - 9/10 | It was an absolute 10/10 race, but the wrong call dropped him way down. That last slicks lap took him 3 minutes, and he finished a full 90 seconds behind Hamilton in the end.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 6/10 | Ran a fairly quiet race, but got punted by his team mate again
Lance Stroll - 3/10 | "Do you need to come in for inters?" "NO!" *crashes*

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 8/10 | So close to a podium for a while, but pitted too late. Still finished ahead of supposed race winner Norris. Cunning T2 on lap 1
Esteban Ocon - 5/10 | Incredibly anonymous race, are you sure he was in?

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 7/10 | Started well, but sort of faded and then got caught out in the rain
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 9/10 | I guess he inherited a podium, but he did so by making the right call in those difficult conditions

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 6/10 | I don't really know where he was in this race
Yuki Tsunoda - 4/10 | Yeah, this is becoming a theme. Where was he? I only saw Norris v Hamilton

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 | Return to form indeed! Sure, he benefitted from the raininess, but he was already around the points before that wet stuff came down
Antonio Giovinazzi - 4/10 | Typical Giovinazzi race. Just much slower than his team mate

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 2/10 | A lap down. Was he that slow, or did he just make the wrong call? Also warned black/white flag for unsportsmanlike conduct, so that's nice
Mick Schumacher - 5/10 | Can't say I remember him, and he retired earlyish so was never running in those final frantic laps

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 5/10 | Spun in the rain and retired, I think, but was off Russell's pace even before that
George Russell - 8/10 | We're getting used to seeing him score points now. Mr Sunday, he is.

Driver of the race? Norris, up until those last few laps. Verstappen, but not up until those last few laps. Yeah, I think I'll pin that title on Norris.

Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on October 11, 2021, 12:04:47 AM
I'll get right on Turkey while it's still fresh!

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 | Struggled with Tsunoda at the start, but then found his way past a lot of supposedly difficult to overtake cars. Close to keeping his inters alive all race long, but pitted at the end which removes a point
Valtteri Bottas - 10/10 | Took the start, won the race, and scored fastest lap. He almost scored a Grand Slam, if not for Leclerc running deep into his first stint. Bottas was actually unstoppable

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 7/10 | Good to see a podium from him again, but he wasn't fast enough to challenge his team mate despite getting a great start and running close behind from the go
Max Verstappen - 8/10 | Unable to match Bottas, but at least fast enough to keep Leclerc and Hamilton behind despite almost not stopping

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 5/10 | Didn't manage to fight his way through traffic very well
Lando Norris - 7/10 | Finished where he started. Looked fast at the end, but pretty much never else

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 4/10 | Gambled on slicks. Gambled very very wrong indeed
Lance Stroll - 6/10 | Didn't gamble on slicks. Scored points. Last driver not lapped!

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 4/10 | Got squeezed by Gasly, then divebombed Schumacher for good measure. Never able to recover
Esteban Ocon - 9/10 | Was he incredibly slow at the end? Yes. Did he score points? Yes. Did he pit? No. Incredible, but those inters were DEAD as shown by pictures after the race

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 8/10 | Genuinely looked able to win for a while there, but he just lost pace and pitting was surely the right thing.
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 9/10 | Couldn't quite repeat what Verstappen did in Russia, but last to 8th is still pretty damn good. Especially compared to Ricciardo.

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 | I don't fully agree with the lap 1 incident on Alonso, Gasly had Perez on the inside and with poor visibility wasn't sure how tight he could turn in. I would've called it a race incident. Without that penalty, Gasly would have forced Hamilton to pit much sooner and could perhaps have finished ahead of him
Yuki Tsunoda - 5/10 | Fought really well with Hamilton, but then... uh, was he even in the race?

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 6/10 | Unusually not able to beat his team mate, despite starting next to him
Antonio Giovinazzi - 7/10 | Unusuablly able to beat his team mate, despite not starting way ahead of him

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 4/10 | Almost took Hamilton off, but we have come to expect this sort of behaviour
Mick Schumacher - 8/10 | Was punted off, but still beat Mazepin to the line. What else can he do in that horrid car?

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 4/10 | Spun on his own, and could only beat the Haases and the gambling Vettel
George Russell - 6/10 | Clearly neither Williams driver was able to achieve much with that car in the wet

Driver of the day? For me it's Bottas!

Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers
Post by: Chrill on October 31, 2021, 06:56:29 AM
US of A:

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 | Drove what looked like the lesser car, and came very close to winning. Nice run into T1 to fend off Verstappen.
Valtteri Bottas - 6/10 | As always penalised by engines, and as always unable to move through traffic.

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 8/10 | Very close in quali, distanced a fair bit in race, but stayed ahead of the surprisingly swift Ferraris. Pretty safe podium.
Max Verstappen - 9/10 | Shouldn't have let it get this close, but kept his cool lap after lap to preserve some rather tired tires. Heh, a pun. Impressive drive, deserved win.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 | Almost able to match the Leclercyboy, definitely the stronger McLaren.
Lando Norris - 6/10 | Not a brilliant result, but at least he scored points and at least he wasn't lapped by anyone.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 9/10 | 18th to points? That's impressive. The Aston Martin isn't all the Racing Point was in 2020.
Lance Stroll - 5/10 | Finished where he started, and lost out to his team mate who started far back. Not strong enough.

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 4/10 | Messy race, forcing drivers off-track then moaning about it. Glad he ended up retiring.
Esteban Ocon - 6/10 | Not as messy as Alonso, but the Alpines surely did not enjoy the uneven surfaces of COTA.

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 9/10 | It is I, as Penny calls him, had a great race. Tried to keep up with Red Bull, not quite able, but way clear of the rest of midfield.
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 7/10 | Got caught up in battles with McLaren, beat one and lost to another. Had to surrender to Bottas in the end too.

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - X/10 | Retired too early to rate.
Yuki Tsunoda - 8/10 | Not bad at all! We know the car is capable of points, but this time Tsunoda himself was capable too.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 6/10 | Potentially on course for points, but messed up on his own.
Antonio Giovinazzi - 7/10 | Very nearly able to grab that point, but Vettel stole it in the end.

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 2/10 | He is just ridiculously slow compared to Schumacher. He is. Either Schumacher is now driving at the level of his father, or Mazepin is just the worst driver to enter F1 for several years
Mick Schumacher - 7/10 | Not a great race because he failed to keep up with Williams, but he finished 90 seconds ahead of Mazepin and almost lapped him himself

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 6/10 | Not a great race for Williams, but close to matching Russell. Latifi has definitely stepped up in the last few races.
George Russell - 6/10 | Like Latifi. Unable to match those in front, fairly far clear of the Haases behind.

WE'VE HAD A TRIPLE HEADER?! Ugh. So much racing to remember. Let's get all 3 in the bag. I'll skip most comments on the two older races.

MEXICO!
Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 8/10 |
Valtteri Bottas - 4/10 | Kind of caused the start incident himself no?

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 8/10 |
Max Verstappen - 9/10 | Great start, easy race

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 5/10 |
Lando Norris - 6/10 |

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 8/10 |
Lance Stroll - 5/10 |

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10 |
Esteban Ocon - 7/10 |

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 9/10 |
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 7/10 |

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 9/10 |
Yuki Tsunoda - X/10 |

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 8/10 |
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 |

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 5/10 |
Mick Schumacher - X/10 |

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - /10 |
George Russell - /10 |

BRAZIL!

WE'VE HAD A TRIPLE HEADER?! Ugh. So much racing to remember. Let's get all 3 in the bag.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 10/10 | The tennest of 10s.
Valtteri Bottas - 7/10 |

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 7/10 |
Max Verstappen - 7/10 | Actually 8, but deducting 1 for pushing Hamilton off-track

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 | Ran well before retiring
Lando Norris - 5/10 | Looking rather uninspiring

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 6/10 |
Lance Stroll - X/10 | Hurt badly by Tsunoda's dive

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 8/10 |
Esteban Ocon - 8/10 |

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 9/10 | Hunting Red Bull now
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 8/10 | Hunting Red Bull now

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 |
Yuki Tsunoda - 5/10 |

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 7/10 | Pit lane to ahead of Giovinazzi. Funny how this old man always finishes ahead
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 |

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 5/10 |
Mick Schumacher - 5/10 |

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 5/10 |
George Russell - 7/10 |

I'll do Qatar separately, it's a more proper rating anyway.

Qatar! They may not have human rights, they may have thousands of dead migrant workers (slaves) to build awesome arenas for some winter football. But they also have drivers with LGBTQ+ helmets. That brings me some joy.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 10/10 | Is he absolutely unstoppable? Looks that way. Perez needs to crash him out in Saudi Arabia, or this championship looks Mercedesy.
Valtteri Bottas - 4/10 | Poor getaway put him back, and the unability to work his way through the field brought him in too late which made his car go punctureparty.

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 8/10 | Pretty impressive drive to 3rd, then a safety pit stop before he almost recovered. Pretty good
Max Verstappen - 10/10 | Definitely drove his heart out to catch but was not able to. Left literally nothing on the table, he was simply 25 seconds behind because that's the limit of both cars and they are both operating at 100% now.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 6/10 | Hampered by fuel saving issues which weren't true, so he simply drove too slow even though the car had more
Lando Norris - 8/10 | Got real lucky with a late puncture and lost no more than a regular pit stop. Still dropped him back.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10 | P10 to P10. That's acceptable.
Lance Stroll - 9/10 | Guys, P6 in the Aston Martin is not bad at all.

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 9/10 | Am I being harsh? The Alpine car does not belong on a podium, yet I am awarding a 9 because it was gifted repeatedly. He was not as fast as Perez or Bottas, but issues out of their control moved them behind him. 5th (or 4th) is still good enough for 9 points
Esteban Ocon - 8/10 | Came from further back and probably helped Alonso a bit. He made Perez lose at least 1-2 seconds, right?

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 7/10 | Nice recovery after a fairly broken car gave him no favours on the Saturday, but we've come to expect the 2 places right behind the top two teams for Ferrari now
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 6/10 | Should have finished higher than this considering he started 5th

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 4/10 | Really bad race. Front row to no points? Ugh!
Yuki Tsunoda - 5/10 | Like Gasly, but not from as far up front.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 6/10 | Very anonymous race
Antonio Giovinazzi - 6/10 | Very anonymous race

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - 6/10 | I honestly feel sorry for him. What a miserable preparation for this race
Mick Schumacher - 7/10 | Beat Russell! That's something!

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 6/10 | Puncture city up in here
George Russell - 6/10 | Puncture city up in here

Three races, good grief, can barely remember what I had for dinner last night....

Qatar:

Merc:
Hammy - 10 - Masterclass!
Val - 5 - Back of the class! Or at least the middle

Red Bull:
Surger - 7 - Must try to make Q3
Max - 10 - Damn that speedy Mercedes, looking scarily unbeatable in Hamilton's hands

McLaren:
Ricky Hairdo - 5 - Tough to score what with all the fuel saving, but didn't exactly shine in quali or at start of race
Chuck Norris - 8 - Shone somewhat

A team called Aston Martin:
My Fault Again - 7 - Curse of qualifying in top ten
Speedy Stroller - 8 - Benefit of not. Still good driving mind

Alpine:
Alonso - 10 - Drove his aged little heart out, as he always does
OffOn - 8 - Top marks for impeding Perez best he could, did not expect him to try a move after being passed!

Ferrari:
'It is I' - 7 - Ended up right on teamy's chuff
Rally Guy's Son - 5 - Not a classic showing

Boris Johnson (aka Alpha Tory):
Greasy Peril - 5 - Great qualifying, hideous race.  Please end this cretinous Q2 tyre rule!
Tsunoda - 6 - Tear-off trapped in rear wing brought him in early

Alfauber:
Kimi - 5 - Ummm
Adam Ant - 5 - Errrr

Haas:
Massivespin - 5
Mickey Boy - 7

Williams:
Latifi - 5 - Forgotten where these guys were running before the punctures hit
Jack Russell - 5

Damn my memory is terrible for races now, think all these years of F1 has filled it up. I'll don a thinking cap early this week for other two races.

Hamilton getting a 9 in Brazil after winning from 25th is quite something. ;D

Ahh yes, meant to say Sunday's race only, seeing as I don't watch the sprint stuff... and I still feel kind of mean about a nine

Can I even digest Saudi Arabia into 1-10s? I'll try.

Template? Template!

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 10/10 | Lost out at the first red flag, was then punished repeatedly by unfortunate or even incorrect stewards calls before suddenly being gifted the lead by what I can only assume was a very confused Verstappen.
Valtteri Bottas - 8/10 | Caught out by the red flag too, but fought back to the podium. Unsportsmanlike to slow down behind the SC to give Lewis room to pit, but in the end it did not matter because they red flagged it anyway.

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - X/10 | Wasn't at fault for crashing with Leclerc (and Russel+Mazepin), the track was just too stupid.
Max Verstappen - 6/10 | I really don't know how to rate him. From finishing position alone, he's maybe an 8-9. If I deduct for all the absurd things he did, he'd lose 3 points (Overtaking outside the track on restart 1, forcing Hamilton wide after the VSC, and brake testing Lewis). So how about a 5-6? I'll round up to 6, thanks to the amazing 2nd restart where he went from 3rd to 1st very cleanly with hot mediums.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 8/10 | Fell off significantly once Bottas got past, but a solid 5th from outside the top ten is always a high score.
Lando Norris - 7/10 | Very unfortunate with the red flag, just like the Mercedes cars, but got back from way down to salvage a point.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 4/10 | Really messy race, and never fast enough to contend with anyone bar the bottom five.
Lance Stroll - 6/10 | The opposite of Vettel in terms of mess, but the same in terms of pace. Finished 11th, but the only driver behind him not tangled up in messes was Latifi.

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 5/10 | Spun on his own accord, no? I feel like more than that went wrong for him here, but I struggle to recall.
Esteban Ocon - 9/10 | Almost the 2nd Alpine podium in a row, but 4th is still great. Lucky with the red flag for sure, but he used it well.

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 6/10 | Somehow invisible despite starting near the front and finishing in the packed midfield. Like Alonso, I struggle to recall what he actually did.
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 7/10 | Somehow invisible despite starting near the front and finishing in the packed midfield. Like Alonso, I struggle to recall what he actually did. At least he started way back so that was nice

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 7/10 | Kept it clean, chasing Ricciardo for 5th at the end but not finding his way past
Yuki Tsunoda - 5/10 | Almost collided with Ocon at the start, then dropped way back through turns 2-3 after simply getting out of rhythm with the others. Crashed with Vettel, but I disagree with Tsunoda getting the blame.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 5/10 | Tried passing Vettel where he could not. Ended badly.
Antonio Giovinazzi - 9/10 | Made it to Q3 on mediums, then ran a clean race in a car too slow to finish any higher than 9th really. Very impressive.

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - X/10 | Unfortunate to bin a car behind Russell.
Mick Schumacher - 3/10 | I blame him for crashing on his own. It started all the madness.

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 7/10 | Kept it clean, which is impressive enough in this mess.
George Russell - X/10 | Smacked across his butt after Perez went Tokyo Drift all over Jeddah.

With a few days of distance to Abu Dhabi, I feel better about rating a bit more neutrally.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team:
Lewis Hamilton - 9/10 | Did pretty much everything right, including an amazing start on a slower compound. Could not pit due to the Red Bull's being in his window, which ultimately cost him the championship.
Valtteri Bottas - 4/10 | Poor showing at the end, and in that final lap alone let several cars by to drop down to 6th. Not good enough.

Red Bull Racing Honda:
Sergio Pérez - 9/10 | Sacrificed in both quali and race for the benefit of Verstappen, but played that part so well. Had Verstappen won without the controversy, we would all be talking about Perez's magnificent defence which cost Lewis something like 7 seconds in less than two laps. Great stuff. Why did he retire the car at the very end?
Max Verstappen - 7/10 | Dropped the ball at the start, and was slower even on new tyres. A strong final lap on smoking hot softs ensured he won the championship, but his racing in Abu Dhabi looked nervous and desperate.

McLaren F1 Team:
Daniel Ricciardo - 6/10 | Was prevented from unlapping himself at the end, which gave him no chance to beat Vettel and the others ahead
Lando Norris - 7/10 | Was the first of drivers to unlap, and that saved a P7 but he was on course to finish best of the rest before a puncture brought him into the pits.

Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team:
Sebastian Vettel - 7/10 | The Aston Martin has looked real bad at the end, but with several cars retiring and things happening they should have been able to luck into a points finish.
Lance Stroll - 5/10 | Among the last drivers on track

Alpine F1 Team:
Fernando Alonso - 7/10 | Also one of the drivers unlapped at the end, but followed Norris home.
Esteban Ocon - 7/10 | Followed Alonso

Scuderia Mission Winnow Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc - 7/10 | Followed Ocon
Carlos Sainz Jr. - 9/10 | Kept out of trouble, so much so that when Latifi ended up crashing Sainz was on the lead lap. Managed to grab a podium after Perez boxed under SC.

Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda:
Pierre Gasly - 8/10 | Also managed to keep himself on the lead lap, which benefitted him at the end and he managed to pass Bottas for 5th at that very last lap
Yuki Tsunoda - 10/10 | Very close to taking the last podium position from Sainz. Probably would, had all lapped cars been moved away. At least got past Bottas for 4th, a definite career best. Tsunoda was clearly better than Gasly this weekend.

Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen:
Kimi Räikkönen - 4/10 | Yeah, about time to retire Kimi. The car lost brake power and he could do nothing but retire
Antonio Giovinazzi - 5/10 | I think hydraulics failed? Well well, he'll do fine in Formula E but he never had the pace for F1.

Uralkali Haas F1 Team:
Nikita Mazepin - X/10 | Covid.
Mick Schumacher - 8/10 | Fought hard but fair with Latifi, the Canadian then going off on his own. Must be nice for Mick to end the season winning a proper battle with a driver from another team.

Williams Racing:
Nicholas Latifi - 5/10 | Drove an ok race, deducting one point for crashing due to underestimating the lack of grip after getting dirt on his tyres
George Russell - 6/10 | Was doing pretty well actually, running ahead of his team mate, before his car too gave up. Managed to bring it into the pits.

Driver of the race? Yuki Tsunoda.
Driver of the weekend? I mean, Verstappen won the championship so probably him.
Driver of the year? Well, we'll see when the scores are added up but I think maybe Lewis Hamilton. He had the better car for the last 4 races, but the rest of the year he was in what appeared a slower car compared to Red Bull.

Well that was a lie. In my defense, I contracted Covid and haven't been feeling great. Recovering now though so I'll get back to it soon.

I think the general gist of viral infections is that you build up immunity. So I'll probably be safe for another six months, or at least until the Pi or Rho variant strikes :o

I have taken the opportunity to do some thinking, and tinkering, regarding the ratings. So here is my amended top 20, compared to our combined ratings.

1. Max Verstappen | (=)
2. Lewis Hamilton | (+1)
3. Lando Norris | (-1)
4. Pierre Gasly | (+2)
5. Carlos Sainz | (=)
6. Charles Leclerc | (-2)
7. George Russell | (=)
8. Fernando Alonso | (+1)
9. Esteban Ocon | (+2)
10. Mick Schumacher | (+5)
11. Valtteri Bottas | (+7)
12. Sebastian Vettel | (=)
13. Sergio Pérez | (-5)
14. Daniel Ricciardo | (-4)
15. Nicholas Latifi | (+4)
16. Lance Stroll | (-3)
17. Yuki Tsunoda | (-1)
18. Kimi Räikkönen | (-4)
19. Antonio Giovinazzi | (-2)
20. Nikita Mazepin | (=)

So, essentially:
1. I'm dropping both Perez and moving Bottas up, because they simply failed to even get close to their team mates but Bottas got closer than the Mexican (Even though those team mates are the defining drivers of the current era)
2. Alfa Romeo drivers both underperformed heavily
3. Schumacher destroyed their team mate like nobody else, and deserves some recognition for it
4. Ricciardo was nowhere compared to Norris for so many races, remember Norris lapping him in Monaco?
Title: Re: 2021 Season - Rate the Drivers

Positions pushed around by a sprinkling of either stellar or shite performances, that is the inherent downside in extrapolating race-by-race ratings into an overall view of the season.  I can see moving Schumacher and Bottas up somewhat - though trouncing a driver of Mazepin's calibre deserves only so much praise, and Bottas was at best lacklustre in '21 - but I'd still have them just behind Ricciardo and Perez, but as always such matters are highly subjective.
