Title: Potential new teams
Post by: Penfold on July 11, 2017, 02:39:06 AM
Stefan GP guy is back with fresh plans to enter F1: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/130630/exstefan-gp-boss-plans-new-team-for-2019

He's persistent, I shall give him that.

What else does one need to get into F1?  Oh yeah, money, lots and lots of money.

Are you sure? Most new teams seem to lack just that.

Well, they must have enough to sort a factory, pay an engine supplier, and build a couple of F1 cars; so many tens of millions to pump in as seed money - unless some kindly bank is mad enough to loan it.   Problem is having enough to keep the show rolling....

Todt still waiting to receive a "serious offer" from any would-be F1 team: https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/todt-no-serious-new-teams-948743/

Not much point in any independent outfit joining until money distribution gets sorted in 2020, and then you may as well wait another year for the Ross Brawn-crafted technical regulations to come into force.

I could see teams joining for 2019, but only if backed by one of the major manufacturers. New teams probably looking at 2020-21 as you state.

Another snippet I pick up is that a former team boss is said to be considering entering a new team from 2021/22, and was present in Silverstone investigating the lay of the land. It is too early to suggest that the project will fly so it would be unfair to name-drop, but sources suggest he was posing some serious questions. F1 needs at least one more team, so I hope the project comes off.

Quoting Dieter Rencken, respected F1 journalist, who keeps a "paddock diary" on racefans.net.

Now let's go through all the photos from this weekend. Who was present?

Some of the ones I spotted on TV: Daniel Craig, Michael Douglas, Nico Rosberg, Jackie Stewart, Steve Coogan, Mo Farah, Gareth Southgate, and Sebastian Coe.  Do any of those names leap out as potential team owners? :)

Edit: Forget all that, I just realised it says "former team boss"....

Okay, so let's try and think of a few former team bosses: Dave Richards, Craig Pollack, Monisha '3 into 2 does go' Kaltenborn, Eddie Jordan (at least we know he was at Silverstone), Alain Prost (no chance of resurrecting Prost Grand Prix), Peter Sauber, a zombie Ken Tyrrell, Ron 'my voice is a cure for insomnia' Dennis, Richard Branson (too busy with space), John Booth of Marussia fame, and, umm, that's about it from me.  Any to add?

Well, Jackie Stewart was clearly there, was was Jean Todt. ;D

Too old and too much of an FIA President. :)

Briatore? I'd say he's a likely candidate for trying something foolish like starting a new F1 team from scratch.

Who?  Name doesn't sound familiar.  Was he involved in any particularly memorable moments in F1's history? ;)

Well, I assume you refer to him dating Heidi Klum. Other than that, I guess you refer to him stealing Schumacher from Jordan. Surely, that must be it.

Yeah, now I've got him.  Flava Briatore.

Sounds like a rapper. You know, the new hit single "Formula Uno" by Flava Briatore ft. Lil Nas X and Zara Larsson. Probably.

I'm going to guess that Penfold's knowledge of rap artists ended around the time of Flavor Flav.

I only know about Lil Nas X because he's a bit of a "meme", and Zara Larsson because she's Swedish. ;D

An outrageous slur, my knowledge extends right up to the heydays of that pleasant Curtis James Jackson chap and the white guy named after those little sugar-coated chocolates....

What kind of music do you two gentlemen enjoy? This isn't strictly related to F1 as such, but still.

I saw Metallica last week in Gothenburg. They covered a Swedish punk song called "Staten och Kapitalet", very Anti-capitalist and pro-revolution song. The royal family were in attendace. Good times.

EDIT: I have an account on last.fm, obviously I'm that kind of person. https://www.last.fm/user/ChrillDeVille

Indie rock and classic rock.

I had a Last.FM for a long time, then got rid of it. Made a new one a while ago, but it's not very representative: https://www.last.fm/user/Hibida87

Going through your list, practically nothing in coming. "Do I Wanna Know?" is the only one that stands out, plus the few classic rock songs you listen to. If I had to pick my all-time top five bands, in no order... The National, Nada Surf, Tom Petty, The Decemberists, Barenaked Ladies? Franz Ferdinand mostly for their first two albums. The Hold Steady.

We do overlap on Fleetwood's "Rumours", a great album. My knowledge of Barenaked Ladies extends to "One Week".

My all-time top 5 artists/bands, no particular order:

Metallica
Sabaton
Iron Maiden
Arctic Monkeys
Pearl Jam

On the bubble? Queen, Disturbed, David Bowie, Ozzy Osbourne

A fairly broad sweep of rock: classic, indie, grunge (yeah, I'm from that era), stoner, psychedelic, plus early heavy metal like Black Sabbath & Deep Purple.  I also love me some blues, all the classic guys (and a few gals) like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Lightning Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Memphis Minnie, etc.  Then right at the other end of the spectrum would be electro stuff: mainly big beat/breakbeat, never been into house or techno.

Back on topic.  Those Panther guys still hoping to form an F1 team, but now targeting Space Year 2022: https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/panthera-asia-2022-entry-target/4789300/
